Chapter 164

My expression remained unreadable as I sat back down. Just then, my coffee arrived. I sipped it, looking at Quinnโ€™s mocking look, and said, โ€œCal, why donโ€™t you get me a lawyer? Iโ€™m ready to divorce him now.โ€

Quinn thought I would freak out and call Jared immediately, but I didnโ€™t. That clearly pissed her off.

She gritted her teeth. โ€œStop pretending to be so calm. Victoria, youโ€™re a hypocrite. Your marriage wonโ€™t last long.โ€

I raised an eyebrow. โ€œIt will last longer than you think.โ€

โ€œEnough,โ€ Quinn slammed the table. โ€œJared is done with you. Stop clinging to him. Itโ€™s disgusting.โ€

I stared at the furious Quinn and sneered. โ€œThen what are you going to do about it?โ€

Quinnโ€™s face twisted with fury at my sharp words. She came here to rile me up, but I didnโ€™t take the bait. That only made her madder.

โ€œWhen are you going to get out of our house? Iโ€™ve put up with you long enough,โ€ Quinn shouted, her hatred clear as day.

I locked eyes with her, feeling her fierce stare burning into me. โ€œQuinn, divorce isnโ€™t something I decide alone. Why donโ€™t you go push your brother about it?โ€

I said seriously, โ€œIโ€™m ready to divorce anytime, but if Tracy ends up marrying Jared, your life wonโ€™t be as easy. Sheโ€™s a workaholic and really controlling. Sheโ€™ll run your family. You and your mom might not stand a chance.โ€

I stood up and left without looking at Quinn. If she wanted to make things hard for me, I would make sure she never forgot it.

An overwhelming unease hit me at night. Maybe it was because I didnโ€™t know what the future held, or because I had lost faith in marriage.

Unexpectedly, Nathan asked me out, and I showed up as promised. We met in a quiet restaurant with plenty of plants outside and some fireflies flying around.

Watching this, a fairy tale scene unfolded in my mind.

After taking a call, Nathan pushed open the door and placed a fresh yogurt in front of me. โ€œOne of the restaurantโ€™s best. Try it.โ€

A layer of honey covered the yogurt. I took a bite. The taste was perfectly balancedโ€”sweet and tart. โ€œItโ€™s really good,โ€ I said with a soft smile.

Nathan sat across from me. It had been a while since we last met, and he seemed to have lost weight, probably from his busy work.

โ€œHowโ€™ve you been lately?โ€ Nathan asked in a low voice. โ€œDid you ever check out that class I mentioned?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah, I went twice.โ€

Nathanโ€™s eyes grew thoughtful as he asked again, โ€œDid you gain anything from it?โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m planning to get my finances in order and start investing. Can I invest in your company?โ€ I asked him seriously.

Nathanโ€™s company was bound for success, and I wanted to seize this opportunity.

Nathan smiled. โ€œSure. My company will be listed in Shariport. Youโ€™re welcome to invest.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ I was surprised. I figured Nathanโ€™s recent busy schedule was because of this matter.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Nathan replied and nodded confidently.

โ€œOnce your company goes public, youโ€™ll be more popular. Should I lock you down now?โ€ I joked, smiling at him.

Nathan laughed, giving me a meaningful look. โ€œGo for it. Invest in me while Iโ€™m still a bargain. You wonโ€™t regret it.โ€

I dropped the joke and calmly sipped the yogurt. โ€œThatโ€™s not really my style. I donโ€™t like taking advantage.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Nathan lowered his tone. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ve waited for so long. Iโ€™ve got enough patience for you.โ€

I got distracted and dropped my spoon, and yogurt smeared on my lips.

Nathanโ€™s gaze suddenly grew intense. As I reached for a napkin, he stretched out his arm, gently wiping the yogurt off my lips with his thumb.
