Chapter 164
My expression remained unreadable as I sat back down. Just then, my coffee arrived. I sipped it, looking at Quinnโs mocking look, and said, โCal, why donโt you get me a lawyer? Iโm ready to divorce him now.โ
Quinn thought I would freak out and call Jared immediately, but I didnโt. That clearly pissed her off.
She gritted her teeth. โStop pretending to be so calm. Victoria, youโre a hypocrite. Your marriage wonโt last long.โ
I raised an eyebrow. โIt will last longer than you think.โ
โEnough,โ Quinn slammed the table. โJared is done with you. Stop clinging to him. Itโs disgusting.โ
I stared at the furious Quinn and sneered. โThen what are you going to do about it?โ
Quinnโs face twisted with fury at my sharp words. She came here to rile me up, but I didnโt take the bait. That only made her madder.
โWhen are you going to get out of our house? Iโve put up with you long enough,โ Quinn shouted, her hatred clear as day.
I locked eyes with her, feeling her fierce stare burning into me. โQuinn, divorce isnโt something I decide alone. Why donโt you go push your brother about it?โ
I said seriously, โIโm ready to divorce anytime, but if Tracy ends up marrying Jared, your life wonโt be as easy. Sheโs a workaholic and really controlling. Sheโll run your family. You and your mom might not stand a chance.โ
I stood up and left without looking at Quinn. If she wanted to make things hard for me, I would make sure she never forgot it.
An overwhelming unease hit me at night. Maybe it was because I didnโt know what the future held, or because I had lost faith in marriage.
Unexpectedly, Nathan asked me out, and I showed up as promised. We met in a quiet restaurant with plenty of plants outside and some fireflies flying around.
Watching this, a fairy tale scene unfolded in my mind.
After taking a call, Nathan pushed open the door and placed a fresh yogurt in front of me. โOne of the restaurantโs best. Try it.โ
A layer of honey covered the yogurt. I took a bite. The taste was perfectly balancedโsweet and tart. โItโs really good,โ I said with a soft smile.
Nathan sat across from me. It had been a while since we last met, and he seemed to have lost weight, probably from his busy work.
โHowโve you been lately?โ Nathan asked in a low voice. โDid you ever check out that class I mentioned?โ
I nodded. โYeah, I went twice.โ
Nathanโs eyes grew thoughtful as he asked again, โDid you gain anything from it?โ
โYeah, Iโm planning to get my finances in order and start investing. Can I invest in your company?โ I asked him seriously.
Nathanโs company was bound for success, and I wanted to seize this opportunity.
Nathan smiled. โSure. My company will be listed in Shariport. Youโre welcome to invest.โ
โReally?โ I was surprised. I figured Nathanโs recent busy schedule was because of this matter.
โYeah,โ Nathan replied and nodded confidently.
โOnce your company goes public, youโll be more popular. Should I lock you down now?โ I joked, smiling at him.
Nathan laughed, giving me a meaningful look. โGo for it. Invest in me while Iโm still a bargain. You wonโt regret it.โ
I dropped the joke and calmly sipped the yogurt. โThatโs not really my style. I donโt like taking advantage.โ
โWhy?โ Nathan lowered his tone. โAlright, Iโve waited for so long. Iโve got enough patience for you.โ
I got distracted and dropped my spoon, and yogurt smeared on my lips.
Nathanโs gaze suddenly grew intense. As I reached for a napkin, he stretched out his arm, gently wiping the yogurt off my lips with his thumb.
