Chapter 229
โMom, this is business. Stay out of it,โ Jared cut in, his voice hard as steel. He turned his gaze to me. โVictoria, donโt quit. You poured your soul into that hotel. Are you really going to walk away before you see what it becomes?โ
โJared, why are you being so sweet to her?โ Sally complained. โSheโs hell-bent on divorcing you. She doesnโt love you anymore. Stop chasing after her likeโฆโ
โMom,โ Jared said again. He never took his eyes off me as he cut her off. โThere is nothing wrong with my marriage. Victoria and I are fine.โ
Yvonne slowly lifted her face from Jaredโs shoulder. Her gaze found mine. โMom,โ she whispered, โplease donโt divorce Daddy. I wonโt talk to other ladies like Tracy.โ
I froze at her words. Yvonne wiped her nose and said, โAre you mad at me? I used to say Tracy was nice and that I liked her, but I actually like you moreโbecause youโre my mom.โ
โYvonne, stop this nonsense,โ Sally cut in, her voice sharp. โYou told me how wonderful Tracy was. Whatโs with the sudden change of heart?โ
Yvonne ducked her head, nervously twisting her fingers. โTracy is nice,โ she mumbled. โButโฆ sheโs nice to her nephew, too.
โOn our trip, her nephew shoved me down, and she ran to help him first. It really hurt, and she didnโt even check on me.โ
A ripple of surprise went through the adults at the table. A bitter, knowing smile touched my lips. Yvonne finally had her first lesson in human nature.
Jared, however, was surprisingly gentle. โListen, sweetie,โ he said softly. โTracy is nice to you because she likes me. If she didnโtโฆ she probably wouldnโt be so nice to you. Itโs that simple.โ
โJared, for heavenโs sake,โ Sally gasped. โHow can you tell a child something like that?โ
โBecause Victoria was right,โ Jared said, his voice firm. โYvonne is starting school soon. She needs to learn to see people for who they are. I want her street-smart, not naive. Sugarcoating everything isnโt gonna help her.โ
Yvonne nodded hard. โIโll try my best to learn, Dad.โ
โJared, Tracy lost the baby,โ Sally said, her voice rising with desperation. โShe said sheโs coming back here to work. She wants to be with you. She loves you, and you two go way back. Sheโs a perfect match for you.โ
โMom, a perfect match isnโt the same thing as a wife,โ Jared said deadpan. โTwo ambitious, strong-willed people like usโฆ We make great business partners. We would make a terrible married couple.โ
Sally was stunned into silence. I looked up at Jared. He might be trying to defend me now, but I was over it. I just didnโt care anymore.
With no one else to attack, Sally turned her fury on me. โSo, Victoria, are you really that determined to divorce my son? Youโd better not regret it.โ
I looked straight at Jared and said firmly, โYes, I want this divorce. And I wonโt regret a thing.โ
Jaredโs face went pale. Yvonne buried her face in his chest, her body trembling with quiet sobs.
Jared softly ran his fingers through Yvonneโs hair and pressed a gentle kiss to her head. โDonโt cry, sweetie,โ he whispered. โMommyโs just upset. She doesnโt mean it.โ
โI mean every word,โ I stated. โI can keep handling the hotel stuff. And that payment you promised me? The one due six months after the divorce? Donโt try to weasel out of it.โ
Jared squeezed his eyes shut for a moment. โIf youโre worried about it,โ he said, his voice tight, โIโll transfer the money to you tomorrow.โ
โJared, what money? How much did you promise her?โ Sally practically screamed. โDonโt be a fool.โ
Jared replied coolly, โMom, this isnโt your business.โ
โNot my business?โ she shot back. โSheโs playing on your guilt to get a bigger payout. Canโt you see that, you idiot?โ
My heart sank. Sally was sharp as a tack. She had seen right through my plan.
โYouโre wrong, Mom,โ he said softly. โVictoria doesnโt play games like that. Sheโs not capable of it. Sheโs justโฆ a simple person. So incredibly.โ
