Chapter 234

I looked at Sally, puzzled. I said, โ€œMrs. Holcomb, are you sure youโ€™ve got it right? Iโ€™m not fighting for custody. I have no intention of taking Yvonne.โ€

Sally snapped, โ€œCut the crap. Yvonne threw a fit this afternoon, insisting on going to your parentsโ€™ place. I couldnโ€™t stop her at all. Jared already arranged for someone to take her to the airport.

โ€œVictoria, donโ€™t push your luck. As your mother-in-law, have I ever treated you badly all these years? You never gave the Holcomb family an heir, but did I ever complain? And now, you want to leave us with nothing, is that it?โ€

Sally got more and more upset, and finally, she just collapsed onto a chair and broke down in tears at my desk.

I stiffened.

Sally sobbed so hard she could barely breathe. When she finally stopped, she glared at me and said, โ€œI donโ€™t know what kind of spell you put on Jared, but why is he still hung up on you?

โ€œYouโ€™re so cold, wanting to divorce him and just walk away. Even when heโ€™s drunk, he still calls your name. Victoria, youโ€™re just a drama queen.

โ€œJared and Tracy have nothing between them, but you just have to make it sound shady. Youโ€™re the one ruining Jaredโ€™s reputation. All you want is his money. Youโ€™re the worst.โ€

I sat there, keeping my face blank as I listened to her venting, but inside, I couldnโ€™t help feeling a bit stunned.

I said coldly, โ€œJaredโ€™s just being stubborn. If I hadnโ€™t brought up the divorce, he wouldโ€™ve done it sooner or later. I know him.โ€

Sally snapped, โ€œYou donโ€™t know a damn thing. If Jared didnโ€™t care about you, how could you have ever married him? I know my sonโ€“heโ€™s not some player. Itโ€™s you. Youโ€™re the one whoโ€™s been trampling all over his feelings.โ€

Like any mother, Sally saw her son as her pride and joy, flawless in her eyes.

I said calmly, โ€œMrs. Holcomb, itโ€™s over between Jared and me. Thereโ€™s no point in your crying about it. You should start looking for his next wife, someone who can give you the big, healthy baby you want as your heir.

โ€œIf you want to know how much money I got, just ask Jared. I didnโ€™t take much at all.โ€

Sally wiped her tears and said, โ€œHonestly, I wish Jared would just end up with Tracy. At least sheโ€™s not as ungrateful as you. Tracy said sheโ€™d be a real help to him, both at work and at home.โ€

I shot back, โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll admit itโ€“Tracyโ€™s great. She and Jared are a match made in heaven. You should hurry up and help him win her back. Let Tracy be the one to look after you from now on.โ€

I wasnโ€™t going to get all worked up and start yelling anymore. Now, if I argued, I was keeping it classy.

Sally got even more pissed, probably because I was so obviously dismissive of Jared in my tone. She snapped, โ€œVictoria, did you ever love Jared at all? When you married him, was it just for his money? Youโ€™re so scheming, itโ€™s honestly creepy.โ€

As she spoke, she slowly stood up and backed away, as if I were some kind of poisonous snake.

I blinked, a little surprised, but if that was what she wanted to think, whateverโ€“let her.

โ€œMrs. Holcomb, at your age, do you still believe in love? Itโ€™s like ghostsโ€“everyone talks about it, but no oneโ€™s ever actually seen one,โ€ I said with a smile.

Sally fixed me with a piercing glare, then suddenly lunged at me. Before I could react, she slapped me hard across the face. She said, โ€œYou venomous woman. I knew itโ€“you were only after my sonโ€™s money. Victoria, youโ€™ll never have a good end.โ€
