Chapter 236
Jaredโs face froze as if heโd just been slapped.
I knew it wasnโt easy for him to be stuck in the middle, but all this mess was because he never did anything about it in the first place.
Jared said, โVictoria, my mom was wrong to hit you. I know youโve been wronged, but could you not call the police, considering her age? Iโll make it up to you, okay?โ
His voice was hoarse, and he looked completely worn out. He pulled up a chair, sat down, hunched over with his head hanging low, and stared at the floor.
โI want 300 thousand. Will you give it to me?โ I asked coldly.
Jared looked at me and said, โIโll give you 600 thousand. Just please donโt hate my mom. She wasnโt herself.โ
โJared, since things have come to this, letโs just get the divorce over with. Your momโs getting old, she canโt handle anymore stress, and youโre a good sonโyou should put her first,โ I said calmly, trying to reason with him.
Jared said, โVictoria, I donโt want to lose you. Breaking up with you is the last thing I want. This is tearing me apart. I know, deep down, youโre the one I care about the most.โ
โStop lying to yourself. If you really loved me, Tracy wouldnโt even be a thing,โ I shot back, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
Jared said, โWhen life gets too comfortable, people start wanting more. Iโm sorry, Victoria. I was selfishโI wanted to keep you by my side. As long as I refused the divorce, youโd be stuck with me, even if we grew tired of each other. At least Iโd know you were close.โ
After he finished, he stared at me, unblinking, the corners of his eyes turning red. He continued, โBut lately, youโve become so lively and interesting. And I realized my selfishness was just another way of hurting you. You once said flowers should bloom in the sunlight. Youโre rightโyou deserve to shine in your own life. Youโre not mine to keep.โ
โWhatโs the point of saying all this? Honestly, I just wanted you to treat me like a real person, as an equal,โ I said, closing my eyes. I really didnโt want to hear anymore of his nonsense.
Suddenly, Jared turned and glanced through the glass at Ryanโs desk. He said, โIs that your new intern? I havenโt seen him before.โ
I nodded and said, โYeah, heโs still in college. You donโt believe what your mom said, do you? That Iโm keeping him as some kind of boy toy or something?โ
โNo, I know you wouldnโt do something like that,โ Jared said firmly, shaking his head.
For some reason, the way Jared acted like he had me all figured out just left me feeling even more defeated. I shot back, โDonโt act like you know me. Maybe Iโm just lonely and want a young guy like him.โ
But Jared insisted, โYou wouldnโt. Youโre not the type to mess with someoneโs feelings like that.โ
I bit down on my lip, annoyed. I retorted, โOh really? Who says Iโm just messing around? Maybe I want to date a younger guy for real.โ
Jared asked, โSo, would you ever get married again?โ
His question stumped me. Honestly, I didnโt think I was cut out for marriage anymore. โWhy should I even tell you?โ I snapped, anger flaring up inside me.
Jared said, โVictoria, we got married because we loved each other. Now weโre falling apart over misunderstandings. Maybe, after youโve gone out and seen the world, weโll end up together again someday.โ
โNot a chance,โ I snapped, jumping to my feet and glaring at him. I added, โEven if you were the last man alive, Iโd rather stay single forever than be with you.โ
