Listen to this chapter:

โ€œWhatโ€™s up, Mrs. Holcomb?โ€ I asked, my voice even icier than before. Knowing she was scheming to get her sister to steal my position just made me even frostier toward her.

I didnโ€™t go looking for trouble, but that didnโ€™t mean Iโ€™d let anyone walk all over me.

Sally used to act all friendly with me, but that was never because she was genuinely kind; it was just that I never got in her way.

And as a daughter-in-law, I always kept to myself and never rocked the boat. Now that there was something at stake, she was treating me like I was her sworn enemy.

Sally snapped, โ€œVictoria, Yvonneโ€™s been pestering me nonstop to see you, and she keeps running off to find you. What did you do to her, brainwash her or something? You and Jared are getting divorced, and you claim you donโ€™t want the kid, but here you are, luring Yvonne to your side. Itโ€™s honestly ridiculous.โ€

I shot back, โ€œI never said anything to Yvonne. She came over on her ownโ€”and now youโ€™re blaming me for it?โ€ Honestly, I was surprised too that Yvonne kept coming to see me.

Sally said, โ€œYou mustโ€™ve said something to her. No matter what, sheโ€™s still your daughterโ€”just one word from you and sheโ€™d go with you in a heartbeat. But sheโ€™s a Holcomb, and youโ€™re not taking her with you when you divorce. Sheโ€™s the Holcomb familyโ€™s only child now, and youโ€™re not taking her away from usโ€”over my dead body.โ€

I frowned, not expecting the child to become an obstacle in my divorce. I said, โ€œThereโ€™s nothing left to discuss. Call Jared over and letโ€™s talk this out together. If youโ€™re worried that Iโ€™ll take Yvonne, I can sign a written agreementโ€”promise I wonโ€™t try to take her away from you.โ€

Sallyโ€™s eyes widened in disbelief. She exclaimed, โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYes. Get Jared here. Iโ€™m only talking to him about this,โ€ I said, my voice icy.

Sally pulled out her phone and called Jared.

As soon as Jared heard I was there, he said heโ€™d head over right away.

While waiting for Jared, Sally shot me a mocking look and sneered, โ€œVictoria, I misjudged you. I always thought you were just someone who kept to herself and never tried to compete. But now, youโ€™ve made the hotel a real success. Guess youโ€™ve got some real skills. No wonder Jared doesnโ€™t want to divorce youโ€”you know how to handle men.โ€

I replied calmly, โ€œWhat are you so worried about, Mrs. Holcomb? Didnโ€™t you already line up his next woman?โ€

Sallyโ€™s expression shifted. She said, โ€œBecause of you, Jaredโ€™s not seeing Tracy anymore, and even Yvonne doesnโ€™t like her now. Victoria, now both Jared and Yvonne do whatever you say. You are something.โ€

I shot back, โ€œSince you know Iโ€™ve got skills, maybe you should quit scheming for a while. You tried to get your sister to take my job and even roped in a few execs to put pressure on me. Not bad, Mrs. Holcomb. You know how to play the game.โ€

Sallyโ€™s face darkened as she gripped her coffee cup tightly. She said, โ€œI just donโ€™t want an outsider taking over a cushy job. I did nothing wrong.โ€

I snapped, โ€œYouโ€™re not wrong, but next time you go after someone elseโ€™s slice, maybe give them a heads-up first.โ€

โ€œThe companyโ€™s run by Jared, and Iโ€™m his mother. Donโ€™t I even have that much say?โ€ Sally said, lifting her chin with pride.

I stirred my coffee and said, โ€œYou said earlier that Jared canโ€™t bear to divorce me. Is that true?โ€

Sallyโ€™s expression faltered, worry flickering in her eyes as she looked at me.

I continued, โ€œSo, even if we get divorced, he still wonโ€™t be able to forget me.โ€

Sallyโ€™s expression changed dramatically as she slapped her hand on the table. She demanded, โ€œVictoria, what are you trying to pull?โ€

I gave her a wicked grin and said, โ€œNothing. But if you keep meddling in my work, who knowsโ€”maybe when Iโ€™m bored and lonely, Iโ€™ll just call Jared over to keep me company.โ€

Sally was furious. She snapped, โ€œHow can you be so shameless? Do you think you can just treat my son like a dog and order him around?โ€

Just as I was about to respond, Jared strode into the cafรฉ. He must have heard what Sally said, because he looked at me, his eyes wide with shock.
