I picked up my coffee and took a sip. Then I grinned and said, โSo what, Sally? Your sonโs a gem in your eyes, but you expect me to treat him like heโs the only one that matters? You never mention a word about him and Tracy, but now you want to throw all the dirt on me?โ
Jaredโs face flushed red as he explained quietly, โTracy and I are completely over. There wonโt be any contact between us from now on.โ
I shot back, โCompletely over? So you admit you were together.โ
Jaredโs face went stiff, regret flickering in his eyes.
Seeing that Jared was getting all flustered after I called him out, Sally instantly jumped in, clearly not happy about it.
She said, โVictoria, donโt be so aggressive. So what if they had a thing? Youโre divorcing him anyway. Why do you even care who heโs seeing?โ
Jared said, โMom, can you not stir things up? Yeah, Tracy and I did have some thoughts, but I put a stop to it before it went any further. Nothing happened.โ
Sally grumbled, โJared, whatโs the point of explaining? Not that it mattersโVictoria already thinks you cheated.โ
I locked eyes with Jared and said firmly, โI donโt need to hear about your romance with Tracy. Whatever happened before, or whatever might happen in the future, I wish you both well. Just make sure you get those divorce papers ready, and quick.โ
Sallyโs eyes went wide. She said, โVictoria, when did you get so tough? Jaredโs got such a good temper, but you treat him like this. If you end up with another manโฆโ
โAnother man wouldnโt betray me,โ I cut in, not missing a beat.
That one line left Sally completely speechless.
Jared fidgeted with his fingers, clearly frustrated. He said, โAlright, Mom, just give us some space. I need to talk to Victoria.โ
โDonโt bother talking to her. Sheโs acting all high and mighty, bossing you around, and I just canโt stand it,โ Sally said, reaching out to drag Jared away.
Jared shook off her hand and said, โMom, this is between me and her. If youโre here for Yvonne, just go get her and take her home.โ
Sally shot me a nasty look and warned, โVictoria, donโt think you can walk all over Jared just because heโs nice. If you want a cut of his money, youโd better earn itโJared never got a cent handed to him.โ
I kept my head down, staying quiet.
Sally was clearly pissed, but she had no choice but to leave.
After Sally left, Jared and I sat there in a long, heavy silence.
I glanced out the window at the street, then checked my watch. I said, โI need to get to work.โ
Jared reached out and gently pulled me back into my seat. He said, โVictoria, I agree to the divorce, and Iโll split some of the assets with you. But itโll take a few days to finalize everything. Just give me a little more time.โ
I nodded and said, โAlright, I trust you.โ
Jared said, โIโll need you to put more effort into managing the hotel from now on. I have faith in your abilities.โ
I nodded again. I was eager to realize my potential at work, and now, step by step, things were finally starting to improve for me.
Jared suddenly asked, โSo, what are you planning to do after the divorce?โ
I hesitated for a second, then shook my head. I said, โNo plans. Iโll just focus on work for now.โ
Jared looked relieved, a smile tugging at his lips. He said, โThatโs good. Youโve been wrapped up in family drama for so longโwork will give you some stability. I think thatโs great.โ
I sneered, โWhy are you suddenly so concerned about me?โ
Jared was caught off guard. Forcing a laugh, he said, โI donโt know. Youโre just never easy to handle.โ
I chuckled and shot back, โWhat, worried I might not be able to find a man better than you?โ
Jaredโs face went stiff for a moment. He then shook his head and said, โNo, Iโm worried you actually will.โ
