Chapter 263

When I got back to Hachester, I met up with Melissa for dinner and gave her a Bulgari bracelet. She was over the moon, showing it off like it was the best thing ever.

Melissa said, โ€œLifeโ€™s looking up for me now that Iโ€™ve got a rich friend like you. Just wait. When I start making money, Iโ€™ll take you out of town.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. Melissaโ€™s such a sweet talker. โ€œAlright, just remember that when you hit it big,โ€ I said, sipping my coffee with a grin.

Melissa suddenly leaned in and said, โ€œYou know, Mr. Hallmanโ€™s company is going public in Shariport.โ€

I blinked, surprised. โ€œReally? I should probably go congratulate him sometime.โ€

โ€œOnce his company goes public, he could be worth billions. Victoria, you need to make your move and lock him down,โ€ Melissa whispered, nudging me.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the point of locking him down?โ€ I said with a smile. โ€œHis money is his business. It doesnโ€™t have anything to do with me.โ€

โ€œBut he likes you,โ€ Melissa said, practically bouncing in her seat. โ€œYou have no idea how popular Mr. Hallman is right now. All these rich girls are after him. Heโ€™s the hottest thing around.โ€

Nathanโ€™s handsome face flashed through my mind. He was young, good-looking, and super talented, but honestly, Iโ€™d been with guys like him before. It wasnโ€™t anything new.

โ€œIโ€™d rather he find someone whoโ€™s on his level and have a big romance,โ€ I said, not feeling it. Nathan was a great guy, and he shouldnโ€™t waste his time.

โ€œUgh, Victoria, once bitten, twice shy. I get it,โ€ Melissa sighed, realizing she wasnโ€™t going to change my mind. โ€œBut honestly, youโ€™re doing pretty well for yourself. Youโ€™re single and well-off."

โ€œAt the end of the day, all anyone really needs is a bed to sleep in and three meals a day. If you can be content, thatโ€™s already pretty great. If Nathanโ€™s not the one, thereโ€™s always someone else waiting in line.โ€

โ€œWow, another life lesson?โ€ I laughed.

โ€œLearned it from you,โ€ Melissa said.

After dinner with Melissa, I headed back to my apartment. It was under my name, and that place was going to be my home for good.

As I pulled up to the building, I spotted a Maybach parked by the curb, hazard lights blinking. I took a closer look at the license plate. It was Nathanโ€™s. For a second, my mind just went blank.

I quickly pulled over and parked. Right then, the back door of the Maybach opened, and Nathan got out and headed my way.

I got out of my car, too. Nathan said, โ€œYouโ€™re back.โ€

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I asked, curious.

Nathan glanced up at the apartment building and smiled. โ€œIโ€™ve been waiting for you. I wasnโ€™t sure which building was yours.โ€

โ€œIs there something you wanted?โ€ I asked.

Nathan looked at me. โ€œI just wanted to see you. My company made a big breakthrough today, and I wanted to share my happiness with someone.โ€

Before I could react, Nathan leaned in and gave me a quick peck on the forehead. โ€œVictoria, you and Jared are divorced, right?โ€

โ€œYou know about that?โ€ I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. I thought Iโ€™d kept it on the down low, but Nathan was really in the loop.

โ€œIโ€™ve been keeping tabs on you,โ€ Nathan said with a smile. โ€œSo, what are you planning to do next?โ€

โ€œNo real plans, just taking it easy,โ€ I said. That kiss had caught me off guard, and my heart skipped a beat. Damn, those old feelings were waking up again.

Nathan smiled, that gentle, handsome face showing a hint of hope. โ€œAlright, then just live your life well.โ€

I looked up and met his eyes. He was wearing glasses, and behind those frames, his eyes seemed even more captivating.

โ€œNathan, I heard your companyโ€™s going public. Congratulations,โ€ I said sincerely.

โ€œThanks. Once I get this all sorted out, can I take you out for dinner?โ€ Nathan asked, his voice a little husky.

I hesitated. Sure, I wanted to just enjoy my freedom, but romance just wasnโ€™t something I was looking for at that moment.

โ€œI just got divorced, and Iโ€™m not ready to jump into anything new. But if itโ€™s just being friends, Iโ€™m good with that,โ€ I made it clear.

Nathanโ€™s gaze lingered on me, and then he smiled. โ€œAlright!โ€

I glanced at the time. โ€œItโ€™s pretty late, and you should get some rest.โ€

โ€œHold on,โ€ Nathan said, pulling out a fancy little box from his pocket and handing it to me. โ€œHere, this is for you.โ€

By the time I looked down, Nathan was already striding back to his car. A moment later, his car vanished into the night.

I opened the box and found a glittering platinum necklace with a delicate butterfly charm.
