Chapter 268

Seeing Yvonne pout, I said, โ€œYou need to learn how to tell whoโ€™s genuine and whoโ€™s just pretending. If someone makes you uncomfortable, just keep your distance.โ€

Yvonne nodded. โ€œDad said the same thing.โ€

I nodded. โ€œItโ€™s your call if you want to answer the phone or not.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to.โ€ Yvonne declined the call, then looked at me and asked, โ€œMom, can I sleep at your place tonight?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œI have to work tonight.โ€

โ€œOh, okay. Maybe you can call me when you have time,โ€ Yvonne said, and her voice was tinged with disappointment.

โ€œSure.โ€ I didnโ€™t lecture Yvonne like I did in my previous life, nor did I try to force her to mature overnight. I just chatted with her gently, and I could see how much sheโ€™d changed.

Yvonne could tell I wasnโ€™t as fond of her as I used to be, and sheโ€™d learned a bit of selfโ€“respect. She didnโ€™t cling to me like she used to.

In the afternoon, Jared swung by to pick her up. Lately, heโ€™s been tangled up in a couple of lawsuits, and the companyโ€™s hunting for a more capable legal team. With all the internal drama going on, heโ€™s been pretty swamped.

Jared walked straight into my office, shooting a frosty look at Ryan, who was sitting on the other side of the room.

Ryan sat there unfazed, meeting his gaze.

Jared settled into the single sofa across from me and said, โ€œSo, youโ€™re really that attached to him? Canโ€™t go anywhere without him?โ€

I replied coolly, โ€œHeโ€™s young. He needs some proper mentoring.โ€

โ€œWhat are you even gonna teach him? In bed, you only ever do the same two things,โ€ Jared sneered, not even realizing heโ€™d hit a nerve.

I paused, then smiled. โ€œThat was with you. With someone else, Iโ€™ve got a whole repertoire.โ€

Jared turned red, glaring at me, totally flustered. โ€œAll talk. When itโ€™s the real deal, youโ€™d probably chicken out,โ€ Jared said, acting like he had me all figured out.

I fired back, โ€œRelax. Weโ€™re done anyway. Why do you care if I bail or stick around?โ€

Jared was left speechless. He looked around the office. โ€œWhereโ€™s Yvonne?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s at the playground. Go look for her yourself,โ€ I said, waving him off.

Jared stood up, then stopped and turned back to me. โ€œWe still havenโ€™t had our farewell dinner. Let me arrange it for tonight.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not having dinner with you,โ€ I snapped back.

Jared froze for a second, totally caught off guard. Maybe he thought I was being way too cold, so he didnโ€™t bother saying anything else and just went straight to find Yvonne.

Ryan knocked and walked in. Heโ€™s gotten a lot gutsier lately. โ€œI moved into a new place today. Wanna come over tomorrow night?โ€ Ryan just came right out and asked me.

I blinked, surprised. โ€œWhereโ€™d you move this time?โ€

โ€œStill in your neighborhood, just one of those houses in the back,โ€ Ryan said, lowering his voice.

โ€œOh, those places arenโ€™t cheap,โ€ I nodded.

Ryan gave me a serious look. โ€œI wonโ€™t be staying around here much anymore. Iโ€™ll give you my keys. Can you look after the place for me?โ€

I paused, a little taken aback. โ€œIsnโ€™t that a bit much?โ€

Ryan smiled, lips pressed together. โ€œDonโ€™t freak out. I swear, itโ€™s nothing weird.โ€

โ€œMe neither,โ€ I replied coolly.

Ryanโ€™s eyes lingered on my face for a few seconds before he lowered his voice. โ€œVictoria, I probably wonโ€™t be sticking around much longer. I need to head back to Braylin for a while.โ€

โ€œOh, really? Well, go take care of your own stuff. Iโ€™m thinking of bringing someone new on board myself,โ€ I said, already knowing Ryan could up and leave whenever he wanted. He looked at me, like he had something to say.

Just then, Jared walked in, holding Yvonneโ€™s hand.

Yvonne ran over to Ryan, grabbed his finger, and gave it a little shake. โ€œRyan, you promised youโ€™d teach me the Rubikโ€™s Cube. When are you gonna show me?โ€

Jared and I both froze. I didnโ€™t know when Ryan and Yvonne became so familiar.

Ryan smiled. โ€œIโ€™ll get you a 2ร—2 Rubikโ€™s Cube tomorrow. Weโ€™ll start with that.โ€

Jaredโ€™s face darkened. He yanked Yvonne back. โ€œYvonne, say goodbye to your mom.โ€

Yvonne blinked, glancing at me and then at Jared. โ€œBye, Mom. Bye, Ryan!โ€

Ryan gave her a little wave, and Jared shot me a look that screamed โ€œwatch yourselfโ€ before heading out with Yvonne.
