Chapter 27

Jaredโ€™s apology seemed genuine enough, coming with both a gift and a substantial investment offer. But I wouldnโ€™t forgive him, nor would I ever let him matter to me again.

Even if he broke up with Tracy tomorrow, heโ€™d be nothing more than a useful contact nowโ€”someone to leverage but never let influence my life.

โ€œArenโ€™t you going to open it?โ€ A flicker of disappointment crossed his face as he noticed my lack of interest.

โ€œIโ€™m sure itโ€™s expensive,โ€ I said, making a show of wiping my eyes. โ€œI should go.โ€

Jared remained silent as I walked out.

Right outside the office, I spotted Tracy coming toward me, her arms full of documents.

Iโ€™d been absent from the office and never realized how many projects Tracy managed. The office gossip surprised meโ€”she wasnโ€™t just competent, but downright impressive.

And she wasnโ€™t some middle-class girl eitherโ€”her family was wealthy. She wasnโ€™t here for the salary; Jared was her real target all along.

In my previous life, Jared had hidden her well, forbidding me from making scenes or interfering. To keep me quiet, heโ€™d showered me with material comforts while completely neglecting me emotionally.

Tracy must have truly loved Jared. Iโ€™d heard she terminated her first pregnancy just to calm Yvonne down. When Jared learned what sheโ€™d done, his anger melted into pity, and he gifted her company stock and a villa as compensation.

At this memory, my face hardened as I pushed open my office door.

When Tracy unexpectedly knocked, I prepared for confrontation, only to find her delivering documents.

โ€œMrs. Holcomb, hereโ€™s my analysis of the hotelโ€™s financial reports with recommendations. You might want to review them. After six years away, your professional knowledge must be quite outdated."

โ€œLet me know if you need anything. If I canโ€™t help you personally, I have connections,โ€ Tracy said, meeting my eyes with unexpected warmth. Her tone suggested she saw me not as a rival, but as someone Jared cared about.

I couldnโ€™t tell if this came from supreme confidence or genuine kindness toward a romantic competitor.

If she meant it kindly, I might actually withdraw gracefully. But if this was just arroganceโ€”if she didnโ€™t even consider me worth competing againstโ€”that would be humiliating.

Tracy had every advantageโ€”a wealthy background, top marks in finance from abroad, and connections in all the right circles. Her glamorous hobbies, from downhill skiing to weekend racing, gave her minor celebrity status in those scenes.

No wonder she viewed me as just another unremarkable housewife.

โ€œHow thoughtful of you. The rumors about your generosity are clearly true,โ€ I said with practiced sweetness. My performance outshone even hers.

I stood and offered my hand. โ€œEveryone knows youโ€™re the best at what you do, Tracy. Iโ€™d appreciate your help. This paperworkโ€™s been killing me.โ€

Tracy smiled warmly as she shook my hand. โ€œNo need to be so formal, Mrs. Holcomb. Helping you is part of my job.โ€

โ€œLet me take you to lunch sometime,โ€ I said with a grateful smile.

โ€œWe should bring Yvonne along,โ€ Tracy replied. โ€œSheโ€™s such a sweetheart.โ€

I nodded. โ€œYvonneโ€™s always telling me how kind you are.โ€

When Tracy left, I turned back to my desk and caught Jared watching us through his office window, his face unreadable.

I focused on my documents, ignoring Jaredโ€™s gaze. Let him think what he wantedโ€”Iโ€™d match Tracyโ€™s act move for move. If she thought me unworthy as an opponent, she was about to get a rude awakening.

At around five, Jared called my office. โ€œYvonneโ€™s going stir-crazy at home. Letโ€™s take her out for an early dinner.โ€

I had zero interest in a family outing. โ€œIโ€™m buried in work,โ€ I said. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you take her? And feel free to invite Tracy if Yvonne needs company.โ€

โ€œVictoria,โ€ Jared cut in sharply when I brought up Tracy again. โ€œTracyโ€™s not family, and Yvonne is our responsibility.โ€

The irony wasnโ€™t lost on meโ€”he was so careful to protect Tracy from domestic duties. His protectiveness spoke volumes.

โ€œFine then,โ€ I said. โ€œBut Iโ€™m bringing work. There are things we need to discuss.โ€ If I had to play happy family, Iโ€™d make it painful for him.

โ€œWeโ€™re done for the dayโ€”no more work talk.โ€ Jaredโ€™s voice hardened. โ€œVictoria, some people are born with talent. Others develop it over time. You donโ€™t need to push yourself as Tracy doesโ€”youโ€™re not her.โ€

My face went cold. So in Jaredโ€™s eyes, Tracyโ€™s brilliance came naturally, while all my efforts amounted to nothing more than pathetic imitation.

โ€œYouโ€™re not wrong, darling.โ€ I sighed dramatically. โ€œIf Tracy were your wife, youโ€™d have that storybook marriageโ€”perfect harmony.

โ€œWhat a shame you ended up with meโ€”all effort, no talent. Do you ever regret settling down so early? Before you could find your perfect match?โ€ My tone walked that fine line between playful and poisonous.

โ€œVictoria, whatโ€™s wrong with you?โ€ Jared snapped, exactly as Iโ€™d predicted. My words had struck a nerve, and his outburst was nothing but a cover for his panic.

I melted into a sweet smile as I apologized, โ€œDonโ€™t be angry, darling. I was just being honest. We both know Iโ€™m the inferior partner here."

โ€œRecognize your flaws and improve them. Iโ€™m not looking down on you, so donโ€™t give up on yourself.โ€ With that, Jared hung up before I could respond.
