Listen to this chapter:

I turned away from Ryanโ€™s piercing stare and caught sight of Nathan, his face frozen in shock. He quickly threw on his shirt, buttoning it up as he walked over. Nathan asked, โ€œYou have more guests today?โ€

Ryanโ€™s face darkened as he asked, โ€œAnd who is he?โ€

I never imagined Iโ€™d end up in a situation like that, not even in my wildest dreams. Yet here it was, playing out like some soap opera. Both of my backup guys showed up at my place at the same time.

Both men turned to look at me at the exact same time, their gazes locking onto me. I regained my composure and offered a steady smile. โ€œHeโ€™s my subordinate, Ryan.โ€

Ryanโ€™s face went pale, and a wave of grievance washed over his expression. I turned and gestured toward Nathan. โ€œAnd this is my friend, Nathan.โ€ Nathanโ€™s brow furrowed slightly.

The tension in the room was thick, but I tried to lighten the mood. I reached out, took the bag from Ryan, and asked, โ€œDid you bring any dishes?โ€

Ryanโ€™s face eased up a little, and he nodded. โ€œYeah, I brought some. I came over to have lunch with you.โ€

I nodded, then turned to Nathan. โ€œDo you have any plans for lunch? If not, maybe you couldโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNope, nothing else going on. Mind if I just eat here?โ€ Nathan cut me off, picking up on my not-so-subtle hint.

I gave a couple of awkward laughs. โ€œLunch is fine, but just so you know, my ex-husband is bringing my daughter over soon.โ€

Nathan jumped in quickly. โ€œPerfect timing. I actually have some business matters I need to discuss with Mr. Holcomb.โ€

Just then, Yvonne called out from the elevator. โ€œDad, hurry up.โ€

In the tense silence, Jared appeared, holding Yvonneโ€™s hand. They seemed to be chatting but stopped dead in their tracks when they saw the scene at the door.

Yvonneโ€™s eyes widened as she blinked a few times, then she dashed over to me. โ€œMom, youโ€™re home. Awesome! And look, Ryanโ€™s here, too. Oh, and whoโ€™s this guy? Is he your new boyfriend?โ€

Yvonneโ€™s words made the whole room freeze in awkward silence. I looked over at Nathan, and he was looking right back at me.

Jaredโ€™s face was stormy as he walked right up to us, demanding, โ€œVictoria, whatโ€™s going on here?โ€

I replied truthfully, โ€œI had a tennis match with Mr. Hallman, and Ryan brought some food over because he wanted to have lunch here. Do you want to stay for lunch?โ€

Yvonne grabbed Jaredโ€™s finger and shook it. โ€œDad, didnโ€™t you say you had lunch plans with someone else? Why donโ€™t you head out instead?โ€

Jaredโ€™s voice went cold. โ€œNo, I didnโ€™t. Iโ€™ll eat here.โ€

Nathan looked Yvonne up and down, then introduced himself, โ€œHey there, kiddo. Iโ€™m not your momโ€™s boyfriend, just a friend. You can call me Nathan.โ€

โ€œOh, okay.โ€ Yvonne nodded.

Yvonne didnโ€™t seem bothered at all about the whole new boyfriend thing. Maybe it was because she was used to seeing Sally always trying to set Jared up with new girlfriends back at home. Yvonneโ€™s way of thinking was way more flexible than most kids, and she seemed pretty chill about us splitting up.

Iโ€™d heard that people who were indifferent and distant didnโ€™t get hung up on relationships. They were quick to accept when things got distant or fell apart.

I was hoping to send at least one of them away, but it looked like all three guys were determined to stick around and see what I could do in the kitchen. Whatever, I would just let them all stay for lunch.

โ€œCome on in and grab a seat, Iโ€™ll get started on the food,โ€ I said, carrying the ingredients into the kitchen.

I checked the supplies and, sure enough, everything was fresh. There was even a good amount of seafood.

Ryan came in, shot me a complicated look, and said, โ€œMy housekeeper put all this together. Think thisโ€™ll be enough for everyone?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah, this is more than enough.โ€

โ€œIs there anything I can help with?โ€ Ryan asked.

โ€œJust wash these fruits and take them out. I donโ€™t need you to do anything else,โ€ I told him. Ryan went to wash the fruit right away.

I looked through the glass and saw Jared and Nathan out on the balcony. They looked like they were smoking and talking about something, but I had no idea what.

Before Ryan could finish washing the fruit, Yvonne came running in and tugged on his finger. โ€œRyan, I brought my Legos! You promised youโ€™d help me build something. Can you help me make a little car?โ€

Ryan, a bit helpless, leaned down and said, โ€œJust wait a few more minutes, let me finish washing the fruit for you first.โ€

โ€œOkay, but hurry up,โ€ Yvonne replied, and then dashed over to me. โ€œMom, Iโ€™m so glad I can eat here with you.โ€ I was peeling vegetables when her words caught me off guard.

After Yvonne left, Ryan glanced over and saw me spacing out. He tried to comfort me, saying, โ€œYour daughter told me about you two. She said she wouldnโ€™t upset you anymore.โ€

I turned to look at him, a touch of bitterness in my voice. โ€œWhat did she say to you?โ€
