Listen to this chapter:

Jared went quiet again. He glanced around the kitchen, jealousy all over his face. โ€œWhen I saw you and Nathan cooking in here just now, I felt really bad.โ€

I looked at him like he was a freak. โ€œWeโ€™re divorced. Why would you care who Iโ€™m with?โ€

Jared crossed his arms. โ€œI was jealous.โ€

I laughed in disbelief. โ€œJared, you have no right to be jealous anymore. Forget cooking. Even if you saw me kissing someone, you should keep your cool.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ He bit his lip. โ€œI want to be blind and numb and just let myself move on, but I tried.โ€ There was pain in his voice. โ€œI still canโ€™t handle seeing you with another man.โ€

โ€œSo what now?โ€ I turned to him. โ€œFrom here on out, youโ€™re gonna see me with someone else. Arenโ€™t you just setting yourself up to be miserable?โ€

Jared stared at me for a long moment and then closed his eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re not the kind of woman who sleeps around, Victoria. Even after the divorce, I hope you wonโ€™t hook up with guys just to get back at me.โ€

I had to admit that Jaredโ€™s ego was unbelievable. Even now, he was convinced that whatever was going on between Nathan and me was just to get revenge for his cheating.

โ€œToday, Nathan and I played tennis. Iโ€™ve never felt so relaxed.โ€ I changed the subject. โ€œRemember when I invited you a few times? You always said you didnโ€™t have time and told me to go find a coach.โ€

Jared looked at me, surprised. I kept going. โ€œThe coach played with me a few times. He kept pointing out what I was doing wrong, like I was some student. But Nathan wasnโ€™t like that.โ€

When I mentioned Nathan, I stopped washing dishes, turned to Jared, and smiled. โ€œHe went easy on me. Heโ€™s really good, but he adjusted to my level.

โ€œIf I hit the ball wrong, he encouraged me. Even if I hit it right at him, heโ€™d come over and ask if my hand hurt.โ€

Jaredโ€™s face kept getting darker and darker, I laughed softly. โ€œNow I get it. When someone cares about you, even if you screw up, theyโ€™ll keep forgiving you. Itโ€™s addictive. Oh, and Iโ€™m sure you know the feeling. Tracy gave you way more emotional support than I ever did.โ€

Jared didnโ€™t say anything, but I could see the irritation in his eyes. โ€œDo you know why Nathan does all this?โ€ Jared gave a short, cold laugh and tried to keep his voice even.

โ€œI do,โ€ I said calmly. โ€œWhen a man and a woman spend time together, in the end, thereโ€™s usually only one goal, right?โ€

โ€œYou know that and still think he cares? Donโ€™t be so naive.โ€ Jared tried to cut me down.

I shrugged. โ€œYouโ€™re the naive one. Did it ever cross your mind that maybe I want a manโ€™s touch, too? Whoโ€™s taking advantage? Who can say for sure?โ€

โ€œVictoria!โ€ Jaredโ€™s voice shot up.

Out on the balcony, Yvonne had been playing with her toy cars. She startled and ran in. โ€œDaddy, are you yelling at Mommy again?โ€

Jaredโ€™s face was red now, his chest rising and falling with anger. โ€œCanโ€™t you have a little shame?โ€

Yvonne blinked at me. โ€œMommy, did you make Daddy mad again?โ€

I motioned for her to go. โ€œGo play. This is between me and him.โ€

Yvonne immediately turned to Jared. โ€œDaddy, donโ€™t be mad. You said if you get mad again, Mommy will leave.โ€

Jared didnโ€™t say a word. I narrowed my eyes at him. I could tell he was trying to plant this idea in our daughterโ€™s head that I might come back anytime.

Then it clicked. The reason Yvonne didnโ€™t care about our divorce was that she believed Iโ€™d return to the Holcomb family sooner or later.

The two had been sticking close to me every day just to reel me back in. This shameless man knew exactly how to work people.
