Jared went quiet again. He glanced around the kitchen, jealousy all over his face. โWhen I saw you and Nathan cooking in here just now, I felt really bad.โ
I looked at him like he was a freak. โWeโre divorced. Why would you care who Iโm with?โ
Jared crossed his arms. โI was jealous.โ
I laughed in disbelief. โJared, you have no right to be jealous anymore. Forget cooking. Even if you saw me kissing someone, you should keep your cool.โ
โI canโt.โ He bit his lip. โI want to be blind and numb and just let myself move on, but I tried.โ There was pain in his voice. โI still canโt handle seeing you with another man.โ
โSo what now?โ I turned to him. โFrom here on out, youโre gonna see me with someone else. Arenโt you just setting yourself up to be miserable?โ
Jared stared at me for a long moment and then closed his eyes. โYouโre not the kind of woman who sleeps around, Victoria. Even after the divorce, I hope you wonโt hook up with guys just to get back at me.โ
I had to admit that Jaredโs ego was unbelievable. Even now, he was convinced that whatever was going on between Nathan and me was just to get revenge for his cheating.
โToday, Nathan and I played tennis. Iโve never felt so relaxed.โ I changed the subject. โRemember when I invited you a few times? You always said you didnโt have time and told me to go find a coach.โ
Jared looked at me, surprised. I kept going. โThe coach played with me a few times. He kept pointing out what I was doing wrong, like I was some student. But Nathan wasnโt like that.โ
When I mentioned Nathan, I stopped washing dishes, turned to Jared, and smiled. โHe went easy on me. Heโs really good, but he adjusted to my level.
โIf I hit the ball wrong, he encouraged me. Even if I hit it right at him, heโd come over and ask if my hand hurt.โ
Jaredโs face kept getting darker and darker, I laughed softly. โNow I get it. When someone cares about you, even if you screw up, theyโll keep forgiving you. Itโs addictive. Oh, and Iโm sure you know the feeling. Tracy gave you way more emotional support than I ever did.โ
Jared didnโt say anything, but I could see the irritation in his eyes. โDo you know why Nathan does all this?โ Jared gave a short, cold laugh and tried to keep his voice even.
โI do,โ I said calmly. โWhen a man and a woman spend time together, in the end, thereโs usually only one goal, right?โ
โYou know that and still think he cares? Donโt be so naive.โ Jared tried to cut me down.
I shrugged. โYouโre the naive one. Did it ever cross your mind that maybe I want a manโs touch, too? Whoโs taking advantage? Who can say for sure?โ
โVictoria!โ Jaredโs voice shot up.
Out on the balcony, Yvonne had been playing with her toy cars. She startled and ran in. โDaddy, are you yelling at Mommy again?โ
Jaredโs face was red now, his chest rising and falling with anger. โCanโt you have a little shame?โ
Yvonne blinked at me. โMommy, did you make Daddy mad again?โ
I motioned for her to go. โGo play. This is between me and him.โ
Yvonne immediately turned to Jared. โDaddy, donโt be mad. You said if you get mad again, Mommy will leave.โ
Jared didnโt say a word. I narrowed my eyes at him. I could tell he was trying to plant this idea in our daughterโs head that I might come back anytime.
Then it clicked. The reason Yvonne didnโt care about our divorce was that she believed Iโd return to the Holcomb family sooner or later.
The two had been sticking close to me every day just to reel me back in. This shameless man knew exactly how to work people.
