Chapter 301

I saw he had his laptop open, working right there on my coffee table. โ€œI just wanted to have lunch with you,โ€ I said, keeping the real reason to myselfโ€”didnโ€™t want Nathan to worry.

Nathan couldnโ€™t hide his delight. He quickly closed his laptop and came over. โ€œItโ€™s about lunchtime. What do you want to eat?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œAnythingโ€™s fine, as long as Iโ€™m eating with you.โ€

Nathanโ€™s face flushed, clearly embarrassed but happy. He nodded, a little shy. โ€œAlright, letโ€™s head out and take a stroll first.โ€

โ€œSounds good.โ€ I grabbed my bag and followed him downstairs.

His driver was waiting downstairs. Nathan asked him for a recommendation, and the driver suggested a nice restaurant.

โ€œGot any plans for the afternoon?โ€ Nathan asked me.

I was supposed to have work to do, but after that blow-up with Jared, my afternoon was wide open. โ€œNope,โ€ I said.

Nathan immediately reached into the back seat and pulled out two tickets. โ€œA friend of mine is holding a luxury watch exhibition in Shaville. He invited me before, and I thought Iโ€™d bring you along this time.โ€

โ€œAwesome, Iโ€™d love to go,โ€ I replied, nodding happily.

Seeing how sweet I looked, Nathan couldnโ€™t help but reach out and run his fingers through my hair, then cupped the back of my head and pressed gentle kisses to my forehead.

During lunch, Nathanโ€™s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, and then shot me a look I couldnโ€™t quite read. โ€œItโ€™s Mr. Holcomb.โ€

My appetite took a nosedive. I said, keeping my tone neutral, โ€œAnswer it. If he asks where you are, just tell him the truth.โ€

Nathan gave me a baffled look. โ€œIs something up?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Heโ€™s just acting weird again,โ€ I forced a smile as I spoke.

โ€œDoes he know weโ€™re together?โ€ Nathan asked, looking a little surprised.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter? Are you scared heโ€™ll find out?โ€ I leaned in, challenging him.

Nathan shook his head. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing to be afraid of. I like you, so I should be open about it.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the spirit.โ€ I shot him a quick smile. โ€œGo on, pick up.โ€

Nathan picked up right away. Just from their conversation, I could tell Jared was suspicious about me and Nathan.

โ€œMr. Holcomb, Victoria and I are still having lunch. Can we talk later?โ€ Nathan kept his tone polite. โ€œYou two are divorced. Sheโ€™s single now. Isnโ€™t she allowed to date?โ€

Nathan shot me a look as he spoke, frowning. โ€œYou planning to get back together with her? I wouldnโ€™t know. Maybe you should ask Victoria.โ€ Nathanโ€™s expression froze as he said this.

I put my fork down, rested my chin on my hand, and paid attention to what he was saying.

โ€œSheโ€™s right here,โ€ Nathan said, his tone unreadable. Then he handed me the phone. โ€œMr. Holcomb wants to talk to you.โ€

I took his phone and walked over to a quiet corner. Nathan had lost his appetite too. He leaned back in his chair, looking forlorn, lost in his thoughts.

โ€œVictoria, so you really are with him,โ€ Jared snapped the moment he realized it was me on the line.

โ€œYeah, and what of it?โ€ I replied coldly. โ€œJared, the least you can do as my ex is respect my boundaries and stop interfering in my life.โ€

โ€œHow could you move on so fast? Were you already into him when we were still married?โ€ Jared was fuming, his anger barely contained at how quickly Nathan and I got together.

โ€œIsnโ€™t it only fair? You and Tracy are practically made for each other, and Iโ€™ve got my own thing going on. Nobodyโ€™s losing out here,โ€ I shot back, my words laced with mockery.

โ€œNothing ever happened between Tracy and me, but it did between you and Nathan. How could you just do that to me?โ€ Jaredโ€™s voice was shaky, like he was about to fall apart.

โ€œIโ€™ve got nothing to be ashamed of. I didnโ€™t cheat, I didnโ€™t have anything with him until after the divorce. What law did I break, huh?โ€ I raised my voice. โ€œJared, youโ€™re the one living in the past, not me.โ€
