Chapter 303

I had always pegged Nathan as the straightforward type, but apparently, even the most practical men had their moments of charm.

After an hour of browsing, my head spun from the sheer opulence. Every piece was exquisite, making it impossible to choose. Finally, I settled on a Patek Philippe ladiesโ€™ watch priced at over $20,000. Without hesitation, Nathan selected the matching menโ€™s version.

He was really doing this, matching watches. A quiet laugh bubbled up inside me. Nathan was utterly transparent. His every little gesture screamed devotion.

By the time we left, the sun had dipped low, casting long shadows across the pavilion. Nathanโ€™s phone buzzed incessantly. Clearly, his responsibilities werenโ€™t going to wait.

โ€œVictoria, I need to head back to Hachester. When are you returning?โ€ His reluctance was palpable.

I shrugged lightly. โ€œI think Iโ€™ll stay in Shaville a few more days. You go ahead.โ€

โ€œI wish I could stay too.โ€ Frustration tinged his voice.

โ€œThereโ€™ll be time later. Focus on work.โ€ I believed ambition was attractive in both men and women. Love was a luxury; obsession with it only led to heartache.

โ€œBut-โ€ His gaze darkened, words hanging unspoken between us.

โ€œSave your energy for next time.โ€ I knew exactly what he wanted to say and what he wanted to do, so I softened the blow with a teasing smile.

Nathan flushed, stammering, โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œThen what did you mean?โ€ I challenged, amusement dancing in my eyes.

Trapped, he exhaled in defeat. โ€œOkay. Fine. Thatโ€™s exactly what I meant.โ€

I watched his car disappear down the tree-lined avenue before turning toward my apartment. Then my phone rang.

One of the company executives was on the line. โ€œMs. Murphy, thereโ€™s a meeting tonight. Mr. Holcomb insists you attend.โ€

โ€œI resigned. Hire someone else.โ€ I had no intention of subjecting myself to Jaredโ€™s temper. This was the advantage of financial independence. I didnโ€™t need this job. Even if I never worked another day, my bank account would keep me comfortable and content.

A muffled conversation followed before the executive returned, hesitant. โ€œMs. Murphyโ€ฆ Mr. Holcomb refuses to accept your resignation.โ€

โ€œPut him on the phone.โ€ This needed to be settled directly.

After a brief shuffle, Jaredโ€™s low, measured voice came through. โ€œWork isnโ€™t a game. Donโ€™t act like a child bringing personal emotions into professional matters.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one affecting my work, Mr. Holcomb. How convenient that youโ€™re shifting blame.โ€ My tone was icy.

โ€œFine. My behavior earlier was unacceptable, and I apologize. But work is work. I hope you wonโ€™t let personal issues dictate professional decisions.โ€ His tone had softened slightly, though the condescension remained.

โ€œAnd will you stay out of my personal life?โ€ I countered.

A long silence followed before he finally spoke. โ€œAre you really serious about him?โ€

My pulse jumped. โ€œWhat, are you trying to pull rank now?โ€

Jared let out a dry laugh. โ€œIโ€™m not the villain you think I am. Nathanโ€™s a decent guy. You have good taste. Butโ€ฆ will he marry you?โ€

I nearly laughed out loud. Of course Jared would think that way. To him, a womanโ€™s worth was still tied to whether a man would โ€œclaimโ€ her.

I smirked. โ€œItโ€™s not that he wouldnโ€™t marry me. Itโ€™s that I wonโ€™t marry him. Jared, why would any woman whoโ€™s already been trapped in one marriage be stupid enough to walk into another?โ€

Another stretch of silence. Then, quietly, he asked, โ€œIs he better than me?โ€
