Listen to this chapter:

I was taken aback. Yvonne actually wanted me to hear them fight. Yvonneโ€™s slippers slapped the floor, and I could hear her nervous, heavy breathing.

I heard Jared say, โ€œYvonne, go back to your room.โ€

Yvonne replied, โ€œDad, no. Iโ€™m just going to sit here on the stairs and watch you argue.โ€

At that moment, Sallyโ€™s heartbroken sobs echoed through the house. โ€œJared, Victoria just canโ€™t stand to see our family happy. She got divorced, and now she wants to stir up trouble for all of us.โ€

Jared sounded frustrated. โ€œWhen has Victoria ever made a scene since she joined the Holcomb family? Sheโ€™s always been careful around you, never dumped the kid on you. So why are you trying to ruin her reputation?โ€

Sally choked out between sobs, โ€œBecause sheโ€™s stopping you from remarrying! Sheโ€™s so manipulative. If sheโ€™s divorced, why doesnโ€™t she just go work somewhere else? Why does she have to hang around you? Isnโ€™t it just because she canโ€™t move on? She just wants to cause trouble.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m the one who begged her to stay, not the other way around.โ€ Jaredโ€™s voice grew louder. โ€œMom, I was the one who asked her not to leave, okay? Do you get that?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not thinking straight. There are plenty of women out there; itโ€™s not like sheโ€™s the only one. Why do you have to treat her so well?โ€ Sally demanded angrily.

Jared was silent for a long time before he finally spoke, his voice tired and defeated. โ€œBecause I canโ€™t find another woman who only has eyes for me anymore. Do you think Tracy wants to spend her life with me? No, she only wants the perks of my company and the resources I control. Sheโ€™s just a pawn the Darwin family put beside me. Does Tracy love me? Can she look at me like Victoria did, as if Iโ€™m the only one who matters? She canโ€™t. I doubt any other woman could either.โ€

Sally didnโ€™t say a word for a long time, probably stunned by Jaredโ€™s confession.

Jaredโ€™s voice was hoarse. โ€œI still canโ€™t get over the way she looked at me, with nothing but love in her eyes. Who else would be crazy enough to insist on signing a prenup on our wedding night? She was proud to the core. She just wanted to show how much she loved me. She was afraid Iโ€™d think she was after my money. She was so clueless. She couldnโ€™t even scheme properly.โ€

โ€œMy momโ€™s not clueless,โ€ Yvonne yelled. โ€œSheโ€™s super smart!โ€

Jared said, โ€œYvonne, didnโ€™t I tell you to go upstairs? This isnโ€™t for you to hear. Youโ€™re just a kid. You wouldnโ€™t get it.โ€

Yvonne shot back, โ€œNo, I want to listen. And you guys better not talk trash about my mom while Iโ€™m here.โ€

Sallyโ€™s voice was steady now, like sheโ€™d calmed down. โ€œOkay, if you donโ€™t want Tracy, Iโ€™ll set you up with someone else tomorrow. You want someone innocent, who only has eyes for you? Iโ€™ll find you a naive young thing. She wonโ€™t be worse than Victoria, just younger and prettier.โ€

Jared scoffed. โ€œWhatever you think, Iโ€™m not planning to remarry right now. Let me be clear. When I realized Victoria was thinking about divorce, I panicked. I played to her tastes and gave her two hotels, not just for me, but for Yvonne. She needs her mom.โ€

โ€œDadโ€™s the best. He still loves Mom,โ€ Yvonne said happily.

Jared ignored Yvonne and kept talking. โ€œMom, can you believe it? If she quits her job, theyโ€™ll leave for Brayton, Showtown, or maybe even go abroad. Sheโ€™ll be like a kite with a broken string, and Iโ€™ll never be able to find her again.โ€
