Chapter 332

Jared noticed how pale I had gotten, and his mocking smile faded. He said calmly, โ€œIโ€™m just being honest with you. Whether you keep dealing with him or not is up to you.โ€

โ€œWhat else do you know? Come on. Just tell me. I need to know what to watch out for,โ€ I said, reaching out to block his way as he tried to leave.

I didnโ€™t even understand why I was so restless. Ryanโ€™s whole situation was making me uneasy. I might not do anything for him, but I wanted to know more.

โ€œGet out of my way,โ€ Jared snapped, like I had hurt him, and he tried to push me aside.

โ€œJared, donโ€™t be so stingy. I know youโ€™re hiding something,โ€ I blurted out as I grabbed his finger before realizing what I had done.

Jared shuddered, staring down in disbelief at his finger in my grip.

It hit me then that I was holding his finger. I quickly tried to let go, but he suddenly twisted his hand, locking his fingers around mine with a tight grip.

I jumped in surprise and tried to pull my hand free.

Jaredโ€™s face went cold as he stared at me and said, โ€œVictoria, you really know how to hit where it hurts, donโ€™t you? I tell you to stay away from him, but you are trying to get me to talk more about him. Have you ever thought about how that makes me feel?โ€

His palm was so warm, and for a moment, it brought back memories of how things used to be between us.

โ€œAlright, forget it. I wonโ€™t ask anymore. Just let go of my hand,โ€ I said, realizing I mightโ€™ve been a little harsh on Jared.

โ€œSo, to you, Iโ€™m just a stranger now?โ€ Jared asked, still holding my hand tight with pain written all over his face. โ€œVictoria, you always say Iโ€™m heartless, but if anyoneโ€™s cold-hearted here, itโ€™s you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ I retorted, and when he still looked down, I yanked my hand free and dropped back into my seat. โ€œHonestly, plenty of married couples share a bed but live separate lives. Weโ€™re divorced, so acting like polite strangers is pretty normal, isnโ€™t it?โ€

Jared gave a dry, sarcastic laugh. โ€œIf youโ€™re so desperate to know about Ryan, why donโ€™t you just ask him yourself?โ€ With that, he turned and walked away.

I sat there in a daze, trying to make sense of everything. Ryan was the important heir, whose whole life was tied to his grandfatherโ€™s protection. Since Jared said he was dangerous, I might stay away from him for now. Still, I just hoped he could get through difficult times.

I couldnโ€™t stop thinking about the way Jared had gripped my fingers earlier. The look in his eyes was so intense, like he was barely holding back a flood ofโ€ฆ I wondered if he actually started falling for me after the divorce. A soap opera twist like this was happening to Jared of all people. Maybe what we couldnโ€™t have always seemed the most precious.

Later, Yvonne came running over and asked me to take her away from the hotel.

โ€œDad and hisโ€ฆBrenda, were pre-paying cards. Is this fun?โ€ Yvonne said, scrunching her face in disgust.

I knew Jared and his friends liked to play games. It was lust that brought them together.

She seemed taller. Her cheeks were rounder, and she looked muchโ€ฆ

โ€œYouโ€™ve really grown up,โ€ I said, picking out some of her favorite dishes and putting them on her plate.

Yvonne nodded eagerly. โ€œYeah, I just want to grow up faster.โ€

โ€œWhy is that?โ€ I asked, surprised.

โ€œMom, if Dad marries someone new, will they have kids? Will I get a little brother or sister? If that happens, does that mean Dadโ€™s money will go to them, too?โ€ Yvonne mumbled, her head hanging down.

I just stared at her, stunned. โ€œWho told you all this?โ€

Yvonneโ€™s voice wavered as tears rolled down her cheeks. โ€œI just guessed. Iโ€™m not a little kid. Thereโ€™s a boy in my class who said heโ€™s going to take over his dadโ€™s company when he grows up. Then he asked if I wanted to be his girlfriend someday. I told him my dad has a company, too, and Iโ€™m going to be a boss when I grow up. But they all just laughed at me. I wish you and Dad hadnโ€™t gotten divorced. Then Dad wouldnโ€™t have to get remarried.โ€

Hearing that, I was completely floored.
