Chapter 361
My heart skipped a beat. The piece Ryan was playing sounded familiar, like Iโd heard it a million times, but I couldnโt put a name to it.
I leaned against the doorframe, watching his long, elegant fingers dance over the keys. In that moment, he looked like a prince straight out of a fairytale.
Ryan only played for a short while before turning to look at me.
โWhatโs this song called?โ I asked.
โBallade pour Adeline,โ he replied. โIts melody weaves together the beauty of nature and the image of a beautiful woman.โ
โOh,โ I replied. โIt sounds really familiarโI hear it all the time, but I never really looked into what it means.โ
Ryan lifted his hand, gesturing for me to come closer.
I walked over and sat down next to him. He smiled and asked, โCan you play?โ
I shook my head. โMariah tried to teach me when I was a kid, but I never really got into it. I ended up focusing on dance instead.โ
Ryan chuckled. โNo wonder you move so gracefullyโyou studied the arts.โ
I gave a helpless, self-mocking smile. โHonestly, itโs just one of my hobbies nowโnot exactly my strong suit.โ
Ryan shrugged. โEveryone needs something to spice up a boring life. I dabble in a lot of things, but that doesnโt mean any of them will be my future job.โ As he spoke, he got up and headed into his studio. โBy the way, did you toss out that sketch I gave you last time?โ
I laughed. โNo way! Your art is gorgeousโI actually had it framed.โ
โReally?โ Ryanโs eyes sparkled. โThen let me give you a few more. Theyโre already framed, so you can just hang them up.โ
I watched as Ryan took several of his paintings down, packed them neatly into a bag, and handed it to me.
I took the bag from him. โThanks. Once youโre famous, Iโll cash in on these and make a killing.โ
Ryan looked at me and suddenly laughed. โDo you know whose paintings fetch the highest prices?โ
I blinked and shook my head.
โThe ones who are dead,โ Ryan said, leaning in close with a mischievous grin. โWho knows, maybe after I kick the bucket, my art will finally be worth something.โ
My eyes went wide as I stared at his almost unfairly good-looking face. I couldnโt believe how calm he sounded talking about dying.
โWhatโs so great about dying? Living is way better,โ I said, meeting his gaze.
Ryan smiled. โYeah, only when youโre alive can you have everything.โ
I glanced at the time. โRyan, Iโve got to head back to work. Once youโre feeling better, letโs grab dinner.โ
He nodded, his eyes shining as he looked at me.
As I turned to leave, he suddenly wrapped his arms around me from behind. My breath caught, and I heard him whisper in my ear, โIโm waiting my turn.โ
I was thrown off by what he said, but then Ryan added, โIโm next in line after Nathan. If you ever break up with him, will you be with me?โ
I spun around, staring at him in disbelief. His eyes were burning into mine. โIโm not a traditional guy. Iโm not asking anything from you, I just want to be with you.โ
โRyan, weโre better off as friends,โ I said.
โNo!โ Ryan bit his lip. โI donโt want to be just friends.โ
โHow do you know Nathan and I will break up?โ I asked, giving him a puzzled look.
โJust a feeling,โ Ryan said. โNathan and your ex-husband are cut from the same clothโboth shrewd and scheming businessmen. Even if they love you, profit always comes first for them. In the end, things will fall apart.โ
My heart could hardly bear it. It was a harsh truth, but it was exactly what happened between Jared and me.
