Listen to this chapter:

That deep voice startled me, and my fingers, which had been reaching for the doorknob, jerked back like Iโ€™d touched a live wire. I pressed myself up against the door, planning to keep listening in on what was happening outside.

I heard Ryan drawl, โ€œUncle Edward, did you really fly back in the middle of the night just to lecture me?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have a problem with you dating, but you canโ€™t just be reckless about it. You said she just got divorced? Thatโ€™s not going to do your future any favors,โ€ the man said sternly.

โ€œI want to make my own choices when it comes to relationships. Not everything in my life needs to be mapped out by you,โ€ Ryan shot back, sounding like a rebellious kid. โ€œYouโ€™ve always tried to run my life.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s all for the family. Everyoneโ€™s doing their part, and none of us really get a say in this,โ€ the man replied, his voice heavy with resignation.

โ€œYou got married, got divorced, and even let your kid go with your ex. You already proved that path doesnโ€™t workโ€”so why force me down it too?โ€ Ryanโ€™s voice was getting heated.

The manโ€™s voice grew even heavier. โ€œJust because I messed things up doesnโ€™t mean you will too.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re older, more experienced, and even more calculating than I am. If you couldnโ€™t handle it, what makes you think I could do any better?โ€ Ryan shot back, his words sharp and biting.

The man went completely silent. I couldnโ€™t hide my surpriseโ€”so Ryanโ€™s uncle was divorced too? It felt like Iโ€™d just stumbled onto a family secret while eavesdropping. I knew I shouldnโ€™t be listening, but I was hookedโ€”I just couldnโ€™t tear myself away.

Just then, the door swung open, and there I was, bent over eavesdropping, my face almost pressed against Ryanโ€™s chest. Ryan glanced down at me, amused rather than angry, and just smiled. โ€œCome on out. Iโ€™ll introduce you to my uncle.โ€

I felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me, like Iโ€™d just been caught in the act. Ryan shot me an amused look and nodded toward the door, signaling me to come out.

Awkwardly, I followed him out of the room and into a huge living room. The place was so fancy it was hard to describeโ€”like Iโ€™d stumbled into a castle by accident. Brilliant crystal chandeliers cascaded down from the top floor, and even the sunlight pouring in through the windows couldnโ€™t compare to the dazzling glow of those crystals. Thatโ€™s when I spotted a man in his early thirties sitting on the couch. There was something about his look and bearing that instantly reminded me of Ryan.

Ryan grinned and introduced us, โ€œUncle Edward, this is Victoria. Victoria, meet my uncleโ€”Edward, you know, like โ€˜grand banquetโ€™ Edward.โ€

I gave him a polite nod. โ€œNice to meet you, Mr. Jennings.โ€

Edward studied me with a slight frown before standing up. Thatโ€™s when I realized he was about the same height as Ryan, and his physique was just as impressive. Even in a plain white shirt, he had an air of authority that made everyone else fade into the background. He was basically what I imagined Ryan would look like in his thirtiesโ€”mature, magnetic, and with that dangerous edge lurking beneath his polished exterior that made me want to keep my distance.

โ€œMs. Murphy, Iโ€™m sure you overheard everything I just said to Ryan,โ€ Edward said, his tone polite as he looked at me.

I felt my face flush with embarrassment and nodded.

Edward didnโ€™t beat around the bush. โ€œRyan means a lot to our family. Hope you get where Iโ€™m coming from.โ€

I shot Ryan a look, and his handsome face darkened. He said, โ€œUncle Edward, seriously, Victoriaโ€™s not my girlfriend yetโ€”I havenโ€™t even won her over. Can you not embarrass me like this?โ€

Edward just gave him a calm, knowing smile. โ€œFace is something you earn, not something others give you.โ€

It was obvious Edward didnโ€™t want me here, and he liked me being close to Ryan even less. Not wanting to make things more awkward, I quickly said, โ€œThanks for being upfront, Mr. Jennings. Iโ€™ll leave you be.โ€

Ryan panicked and grabbed my arm. โ€œIโ€™m coming with you.โ€

I shot him a look, telling him not to make a scene, but Ryan just turned to Edward and said, โ€œIf you want to go snitch to Grandpa, be my guest. It wonโ€™t change anything. And if Grandpaโ€™s not happy, Iโ€™ll just cry a bitโ€”he always caves when I do.โ€

โ€œYou only get away with this because he spoils you. Donโ€™t push your luck,โ€ Edward said, clearly frustrated but powerless to stop him.

โ€œYouโ€™re all about business, but Iโ€™m headed for politics. Uncle Edward, our paths were never the same,โ€ Ryan said with a smirk. โ€œI remember Grandpa saying you guys were supposed to do whatever it takes to back me up.โ€

Edwardโ€™s face went stiff, but he nodded. โ€œFine, go ahead and enjoy yourself while youโ€™re young. Just hope when itโ€™s time to take responsibility, youโ€™ll still have the guts to charge forward!โ€

Ryan shrugged, a roguish grin on his face. โ€œPeople only get a hundred yearsโ€”doesnโ€™t matter how you live it, as long as Iโ€™m happy, thatโ€™s what counts.โ€
