Listen to this chapter:

I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment. I couldnโ€™t believe Edward could talk about romance and intimacy in such a calm, indifferent tone. For people like him, relationships between men and women were as routine as having a meal or a glass of waterโ€”nothing special at all.

The real world is split by invisible lines, and the gulf between social classes is like a hidden net, always keeping our worlds apart.

Ryan and I were like two people out of sync with timeโ€”meeting in the same place and moment, but that didnโ€™t mean we ever had a real shot at being together.

Edward didnโ€™t miss the flicker of emotion on my face. He continued, โ€œI know youโ€™re not happy about this, and it probably hurts. But youโ€™ve been married beforeโ€“you should know that love is the last thing a marriage needs.โ€

I shot him a surprised look. The last time I eavesdropped on him and Ryan talking, I found out heโ€™d been divorced too, and even had a kid with his ex-wife.

Seeing the defiance in my eyes, Edward scoffed. โ€œMarriage is all about management. As long as there are interests involved, the best way is to join forces with someone strong, right?โ€

I dropped my head, feeling defeated, but I couldnโ€™t help agreeing with him.

Jared and I got married in a burst of passion, but after tying the knot, we barely spoke the same language. I couldnโ€™t help him with his career, and there was no way I could ever catch up to his pace.

Iโ€™m just not cut out for marriageโ€“divorce was really the best thing for me.

But nowโ€ฆ Jaredโ€™s stuck in some weird cycle. Before the divorce, he was chasing a thrill with Tracy, and now heโ€™s got his eyes back on me.

Feelings are just so messy, so hard to figure out.

โ€œYouโ€™re not saying anythingโ€“does that mean you agree?โ€ Edward asked, his brow furrowing.

โ€œYes,โ€ I said, steadying myself and looking him in the eye. โ€œMr. Jennings, youโ€™re right. Honestly, I never thought about taking things further with Ryan. Weโ€™re justโ€ฆ nothing, really.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s the only one catching feelings here,โ€ Edward cut in, saying what I couldnโ€™t.

I nodded. โ€œHeโ€™s confessed to me a few times. Mr. Jennings, even if you hadnโ€™t come to talk to me, I already knew weโ€™re from totally different worlds. I wouldnโ€™t try to start anything with him, and honestly, Iโ€™m afraid Iโ€™d only drag him down.โ€

โ€œMs. Murphy, youโ€™re a smart woman,โ€ Edward finally relaxed his intense gaze and said calmly, โ€œSo Iโ€™m sure you can figure out a way to make Ryan realize itโ€™s not going to happen, right?โ€

I was stunnedโ€“Edward had just put the ball right back in my court.

โ€œIโ€™ve turned him down, more than once. I even started dating someone else, but Ryan didnโ€™t cause any drama. He just said heโ€™d wait until I break up. Mr. Jennings, you know him better than I doโ€“maybe you should be the one to come up with a solution.โ€ I tossed the problem right back at him.

Edwardโ€™s face grew serious. โ€œMs. Murphy, you look like someone who knows her way around relationships. Ryanโ€™s little crush probably doesnโ€™t faze you at all. Iโ€™m sure you can figure out a way to make him give up.โ€

That annoyed me a little, so I just shrugged and said, โ€œHonestly, if I really wanted him to give up, I could just get married, have a kid or something. That would definitely do the trick.โ€

โ€œSo, do you have someone in mind to marry?โ€ Edward asked, actually considering my words.

โ€œNo,โ€ I replied without a second thought. โ€œI have no intention of ever getting married or having kids in this lifetime.โ€

Edward just went quiet.

The air instantly turned awkward, and Edwardโ€™s face clouded over. โ€œMs. Murphy, are you just messing with me?โ€

โ€œNo way, I wouldnโ€™t dare,โ€ I said. โ€œHonestly, youโ€™re kind of putting me on the spot here. But donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll keep saying no until he finally gets the message.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not going to work,โ€ Edward said, his voice icy. โ€œI know how Ryan isโ€“if you donโ€™t make it clear to him, heโ€™ll just keep hoping.โ€

I paused, feeling a bit exasperated. โ€œBut honestly, I donโ€™t have anyone I want to marry right now.โ€

โ€œRemarrying your ex-husband might not be a bad idea,โ€ Edward suggested.

โ€œI just divorced himโ€“and I was the one who asked for it. Itโ€™s a matter of pride; I canโ€™t just turn around and get back with him,โ€ I shot the idea down right away.

Edward raised an eyebrow. โ€œThen just find someone else and stage a fake marriage. That shouldnโ€™t be too hard for you, right?โ€
