Chapter 395

Edward's authoritative and handsome face closed in on me, his intimidating aura making it hard to breathe. My breath caught, and my eyes went wide in shock.

โ€˜Damn it, Iโ€™m in big trouble now,โ€™ I thought.

โ€œMr. Jennings, I swear I wonโ€™t tell a soul what you said today,โ€ I replied, desperate to save my own skin.

โ€œRyan might be an adult, but heโ€™s still sensitive and fragile. And since heโ€™s fallen for you, every word you say could hurt him,โ€ Edward said, sounding every bit like a lion fiercely protecting his cub.

I froze for a second, then nodded almost on reflex. โ€œYeah, I know, I know heโ€™s not really that mature. I promise, I wonโ€™t mess around with him.โ€

Just then, Edwardโ€™s phone rang. He finally eased up on the pressure, stood up, and pulled out his phone to answer it.

It sounded like work stuff. He glanced back at me and motioned for me to leave.

I felt like Iโ€™d just been given a second chance at life. I bolted for the door, practically flying out of there.

The moment the cool breeze hit me, I realized my back was drenched in cold sweat. Panic and a tightness in my chest crashed over me all at once. I pressed my hand to my chest, trying to muffle the sound of my own racing heartbeat.

โ€œWho were you with in there?โ€ Jaredโ€™s voice suddenly came from down the hall.

I looked up and met his gaze. He took a few steps closer, his eyes fixed on my face. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? You look really pale.โ€

I shook my head and started walking away.

But Jared reached out and grabbed my arm. โ€œDid someone bully you?โ€

I looked at Jared. After facing Edwardโ€™s intimidation, Jared felt a lot more approachable.

โ€œIโ€™m fine. Go back to your game. Iโ€™m just a bit thirsty,โ€ I said, planning to get some water at the front desk.

Jared said softly, โ€œItโ€™s fine. Amyโ€™s with me, so you donโ€™t have to worry about me.โ€

I couldnโ€™t be bothered to send him away again and just headed straight for the reception area.

Jared followed and took a seat behind me. He kept glancing my way, the concern on his face plain as day.

I ordered a lemonade and a few sweets, then grabbed a seat by the window.

Jared got himself a coffee and sat right across from me.

โ€œDid you actually listen when I told you not to work so late?โ€ Jared asked, sipping his coffee with that usual elegance, watching me over the rim of his cup.

I nodded. โ€œRelax, I was scared out of my mind too. Iโ€™ll keep my guard up from now on.โ€

Jaredโ€™s furrowed brow finally relaxed, and he nodded. โ€œSo, have you thought about what I said beforeโ€“about me protecting you?โ€

I paused with my glass halfway to my lips and shot him a look. โ€œIf protecting a flower just means locking it up in a greenhouse instead of letting it grow in the sun, isnโ€™t that just hurting it in a different way?โ€

Jared was caught off guard by my retort, but then he laughed to himself. โ€œYou always know how to shut me down, Victoria. A rose with thorns is way more interesting.โ€

But I just sat there, frowning, my mind weighed down with worries. Back then, whenever Jared said something, Iโ€™d always have my guard up, never missing a chance to give him a piece of my mind.

But now, with bigger problems looming over me, I couldnโ€™t even bring myself to talk back.

I nibbled on some sweets, feeling a bit more relaxed. Noticing Jared still hadnโ€™t left, I asked, โ€œHowโ€™s Yvonne doing these days?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s settling into elementary school pretty well. Lately, sheโ€™s been practicing for a performance for National Day. Maybe you could come back and see her for it?โ€ Jared said in a low voice.

I nodded. โ€œSure, Iโ€™ll come back this Friday.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ Jaredโ€™s eyes brightened. โ€œMaybe we can take Yvonne out for dinner then?โ€

I didnโ€™t agree, but I didnโ€™t refuse either. After all, things have a way of changing when you least expect it.

Jaredโ€™s face fell when I didnโ€™t answer. โ€œYouโ€™re not going back to Hachester for Yvonne, are you? Itโ€™s for Nathan, isnโ€™t it?โ€

I froze, thrown off. โ€˜Whyโ€™s he bringing up Nathan out of nowhere?โ€™ I wondered.

Jared was already jumping to conclusions, his expression getting even darker. โ€œWerenโ€™t you all about chasing your career? Why are you suddenly making your love life such a big deal?โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œThatโ€™s not how I see it. My career is what matters most to me right now. If love happens, it happens; if not, so be it.โ€

โ€œSo, who are you really going back to Hachester to see this Friday?โ€ Jared wouldnโ€™t let it go.
