Chapter 410
โVictoria, why are you so mad? I was just worried about you being alone and wanted to help you find someone,โ Jessica blurted out, scrambling to defend herself after I hit the nail on the head.
โDo I look desperate for a man to you? Iโm divorced, and you set me up with some old guy? Why not a younger one?โ I wasnโt holding back anymoreโno more letting her pawn me off like this.
โVictoria, youโre really taking my good intentions the wrong way. I just donโt want you to end up alone in the future. Young guys donโt have the money to support you, you know,โ Jessica shot back, cutting right to my weak spot.
I lazily ran my fingers through my hair and said, โIf things ever get that bad, Iโll just go back to my ex. At least heโs young, hot, and rich.โ
โMr. Holcomb would take you back? Please, thatโs hilarious,โ Jessica said, crossing her arms and letting out an annoyed laugh.
I shrugged. โIf I feel like buttering him up, maybe. Or maybe if I mess with him a little, heโll actually come running back.โ
โVictoria, you really let me down. All those years of friendship, and it was all for nothing,โ Jessica said, so pissed she wouldnโt even look at me.
Warner snorted, โMs. Murphy, with your standards, I wouldnโt dare. Go chase after your boy toy. Iโm actually curious what this so-called younger guy looks like.โ
Jessica shot back, โWhat do you think? Just graduated college, probably doesnโt even know where heโll be working.โ
I stood up, grabbed my bag, and pulled out 600 dollars in cash, slapping it on the table. โLetโs split the bill.โ
With that, I walked out, not looking back.
But Jessica actually chased after me, grabbing my arm. โVictoria, what are you doing? Are we not friends anymore?โ
โIโm done being friends with someone who treats me like a product to be traded,โ I shot back, my anger getting the better of me.
โWarnerโs really a great guy. His ex-wife ran off with his money, but heโs got a good heart,โ Jessica insisted, still trying to sell me on him.
โIf heโs so great, you keep him,โ I said, pushing her hand away and walking off without looking back.
I found a quiet cafรฉ and sat there by myself.
After that blind date Jessica set up for me, it really got to me.
In Jessicaโs mind, the best I could do was a guy like Warner.
Was a divorced woman really just someone to be tossed aside?
Did I really not deserve to be loved or treasured anymore?
I was feeling pretty low.
People hustled past the window, their faces showing everythingโsadness, happiness, anxiety. Everyone looked so busy.
Where was everyone rushing off to, anyway?
The cafรฉ music was kinda gloomy; those violin notes just made me feel even worse.
I zoned out, staring at the street, totally lost for a second.
Just then, my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screenโit was Ryan.
I answered, and Ryan said, โVictoria, where are you? Want to come play a game with me?โ
โPlay what?โ I asked.
โBadminton,โ Ryan replied.
Honestly, I was feeling pretty down. Maybe working up a sweat would help me stop overthinking everything.
โSure, where are you? Iโll come over,โ I said, agreeing to meet him.
Just as I got up, I noticed some sharp-looking businessman at the next table streaming a major financial news segment on his laptop. When I caught the news about the failed IPO, I instinctively glanced overโand, to my surprise, Nathanโs face popped up on the screen. My mind went totally blank for a second. Without thinking, I whipped out my phone and started searching for updates on Nathanโs company. Turns out their IPO in Aurelia had crashed and burned. People online were all guessing what went downโsome said it was all because of some crazy shakeup with the companyโs shares. Everyone whoโd been hyping up the company was now gossiping about it.
I just stood there, frozen. โHow the hell did this happen?โ I thought.
โThat guy who was always so full of lifeโcould he really handle a blow like this?โ
โWhat really happened?โ
I was supposed to head back to Hachester on Friday, but it was only Thursday, and I just couldnโt wait. I had to go back and find out for myself.
I shot Ryan a quick text, telling him something urgent had come up and I couldnโt make it. Without another thought, I rushed to my car and sped off.
I didnโt even go home to grab anythingโI just got on the highway and drove straight toward Hachester.
