Chapter 416

I glanced up at him but didnโ€™t stop him.

But Yvonne stepped in, playing the role I usually took. โ€œDad, youโ€™re drinking. Whoโ€™s gonna drive us home later?โ€

Jared just said, โ€œYour mom will.โ€

I reassured Yvonne, โ€œHey, Yvonne, why donโ€™t you come stay with me tonight?โ€

Jared suddenly asked, โ€œIf Yvonneโ€™s coming over, are you gonna change the sheets?โ€

His question made me blush a little, and I quickly replied, โ€œI already changed them this morning.โ€

Jaredโ€™s expression darkened even more, and Yvonne blinked, confused. โ€œMom, why do you have to change the sheets when I come over?โ€

We both fell silent.

Dinner wasnโ€™t exactly enjoyableโ€“Jared being all emotional just killed the vibe.

After dinner, I just took his car and drove Yvonne home. Jared said some friends were coming to pick him upโ€“he was heading out for the night.

When we got home, I started trimming Yvonneโ€™s nails. As I worked, she watched me and said, โ€œMom, honestly, I still like it best when you take care of me.โ€

I blinked, a little caught off guard. โ€œWhyโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œBecause when youโ€™re here, I donโ€™t have to lift a finger,โ€ Yvonne replied, probably remembering those days when I was basically her personal maid. I used to do everything for herโ€“even squeezed out her toothpaste, filled her water cup, and had to call her over and over just to get her to brush her teeth. And even then, sheโ€™d still be pouting with bedhead.

โ€œMomโ€™s got her own work to do now,โ€ I said gently. I wasnโ€™t about to repeat the same mistakes from my previous lifeโ€“I wanted to walk my own path this time.

โ€œI know,โ€ Yvonne said, clinging to my neck. โ€œMom, just focus on your work. Iโ€™ll grow up, I promise.โ€ I asked her, โ€œHas Tracy been coming by lately?โ€

Iโ€™m so wary of Tracy now, and itโ€™s all because of Yvonne. In my previous life, Tracy had Yvonne under her wing for years, and it completely changed herโ€”she became selfish and had a terrible temper. Worst of all, she couldnโ€™t even make the minimum score to graduate high school. Jared had no choice but to scramble and send her overseas, just hoping sheโ€™d have a shot at a future.

Once Yvonne was abroad, she was like a bird finally let out of its cageโ€“totally free. Tracy would fly out to see her whenever she had the time, but me, real mom, only got to cook for her for two months before she kicked me out, all because Tracy could just hire her a five-star chef.

Thinking about all that, Tracy is dead to me now. Thereโ€™s no way Iโ€™ll ever let her have another chance to influence my child.

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t come by anymoreโ€“Dad doesnโ€™t want to see her,โ€ Yvonne piped up right away. โ€œBut she still keeps pestering Dad. Sheโ€™s so annoying! I even told her that Dadโ€™s in love with my mom, but she just says Iโ€™m too little to understand anything. Sheโ€™s the one who doesnโ€™t get it!โ€

I kissed her forehead and whispered, โ€œIf your dad ever starts dating someone, make sure you test her out a bitโ€“see what sheโ€™s really like. She has to treat you right. If she doesnโ€™t, let your dad know.โ€

โ€œBut if Dad really likes her, will he believe me?โ€ Yvonne asked, her eyes wide with uncertainty.

โ€œNever go into anything important unprepared. If something matters to you, learn to hold onto proof. When you have evidence, the truth will always come out and people will show who they really are.โ€ I was determined to teach Yvonne how to read people and handle the real world.

โ€œMom, youโ€™re so smart! Iโ€™ll remember that,โ€ Yvonne said, cuddling up even closer to me, all smiles.

Around 2 a.m., my phone buzzed with a text.

The message woke me up.

Yvonne rolled over, rubbed her eyes in annoyance, and went straight back to sleep.

Clutching my phone, I stepped out into the living room and saw the message was from Jared.

Heโ€™d sent me a text: โ€œHoney, Iโ€™m drunk. Can you keep me in line?โ€
