Listen to this chapter:

Yvonne, ever the sharp one, caught on immediately. She propped her chin on her hand and grinned. โ€œIsnโ€™t my mom super pretty?โ€

Ryan shot me a look, like he was silently begging for help.

I quickly walked over and said softly, โ€œYvonne, donโ€™t say silly things.โ€

Yvonne just let out a little โ€œOh.โ€

Just then, the doorbell rang again. Yvonne hurried over to open it โ€“ this time, it was Quinn.

As soon as Quinn walked into the living room, her eyes went straight to Ryan.

Her face lit up, and she remembered teasing him last time, trying to get his name, but he totally ignored her.

Now, she gave me a suspicious look. โ€œWhy is he here? Is he still working for you?โ€

Clearly, Quinn had no clue about my connection with Ryan. If sheโ€™d ever bothered to ask Jared, she wouldnโ€™t be asking that. โ€œNo, he quit. Weโ€™re just friends now,โ€ I replied.

Quinn flashed a sweet, harmless smile and plopped down next to Ryan. โ€œHey, Iโ€™m Quinn. Last time, you didnโ€™t tell me your name.โ€

โ€œAunt Quinn, thatโ€™s Ryan,โ€ Yvonne piped up.

โ€œJennings is your last name?โ€ Quinn raised her eyebrows in surprise, then grinned playfully. โ€œWait, donโ€™t tell me youโ€™re secretly loaded or something.โ€

Ryan looked a bit awkward and shrugged. โ€œNah, just a regular family.โ€

Quinnโ€™s no fool. Seeing Ryan at my place, she was definitely running through all kinds of scenarios in her head.

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s going on between you two?โ€ Quinn asked, not bothering to play nice now that she knew Ryan wasnโ€™t some secret millionaire.

Ryan answered without hesitation, โ€œIโ€™m chasing her.โ€

Quinnโ€™s face fell. She got up, walked into the kitchen, and quietly closed the door behind her.

She shot me a look, clearly annoyed. โ€œVictoria, are you really picking up a boy toy now?โ€

I smirked. โ€œWhatโ€™s the big deal? Got a problem with that?โ€

โ€œOf course I do! You shouldโ€™ve known โ€“ heโ€™s totally my type,โ€ Quinn huffed, getting even more upset. โ€œI liked him last time, so how could you just take him for yourself?โ€

I raised an eyebrow. โ€œWell, looks like we have similar taste in men.โ€

โ€œVictoria, youโ€™ve got no shame! Using my brotherโ€™s money to keep another guy around โ€“ have you lost your mind?โ€ Quinn was practically fuming.

I raised my hand to shut her up. โ€œLetโ€™s get one thing straight โ€“ Ryanโ€™s just my friend. So stop barking like a mad dog in here.โ€

โ€œHe literally just said heโ€™s chasing you!โ€ Quinn snapped, her face flushed with anger. โ€œIf you werenโ€™t leading him on, he wouldnโ€™t dare say that!โ€

Honestly, Quinn was so clueless, totally missing the bigger picture.

โ€œDo I even need to try? Just standing here is enough for him to fall for me.โ€ Thinking about all the crap Quinn gave me in my previous life, I wasnโ€™t about to play nice.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ I knew it! Youโ€™re just a natural-born vixen!โ€ Quinn spat, her teeth clenched.

โ€œWell, not everyone is born to be a vixen,โ€ I retorted with a scoff.

Quinn was so mad she was practically speechless. Just then, Yvonne ran over and opened the kitchen door. โ€œAunt Quinn, are you arguing with my mom again?โ€

โ€œGo on, kiddo, you donโ€™t understand,โ€ Quinn muttered, not daring to argue in front of Yvonne โ€“ she knew Jared would scold her if he found out.

I snuck a glance at Ryan sitting on the couch. He looked weighed down, his handsome face completely blank, lips pressed into a tight line.

I was so used to his carefree, easygoing vibe โ€“ seeing him suddenly so brooding and intense, it unsettled me a bit.

โ€œQuinn, just take Yvonne home. Donโ€™t make your mom worry,โ€ I said, trying to hurry her along.

But Quinn wasnโ€™t ready to leave. She walked over to the couch and leaned in toward Ryan. โ€œHey, Ryan, why donโ€™t you try liking someone else?โ€

Ryan looked at her like she was crazy, his voice icy. โ€œYou mean you? Sorry, but Iโ€™m not into airheads.โ€

Quinn didnโ€™t expect him to be so blunt. She stood there, stunned, for a long moment.

โ€œIf youโ€™re blind, go see an eye doctor,โ€ Quinn snapped, grabbing Yvonne and storming out.

Yvonne didnโ€™t even get to say goodbye to us.

I saw them out to the door, listening as the elevator doors slid shut.

With a slight frown, I closed the door behind them. As I turned around, I nearly collided with Ryan, his cool, minty scent brushing past me.

I looked up, meeting his deep, smoldering gaze. The next second, without a word, he caught my chin and pulled me into a fierce, uninvited kiss.
