โRyan, youโre so good to me. Iโm afraid Iโll never be able to make it up to you,โ I said softly.
โI never asked you to give anything back. I just want to see you keep moving forward. Someday, our paths will cross again,โ Ryan replied with a smile, slipping right back into that easy, refined charm of his.
I blinked, feeling like that dark, brooding side of him from just now was a whole different person.
Waitโฆ does he actually have a split personality? One lurking in the shadows, the other out in the open?
โRyan, I hope you donโt mind me asking, but do you have a therapist?โ I looked at him seriously.
Ryan frowned. โWhy are you asking?โ
โHave you ever checked if you might have, like, a split personality or something?โ
Ryan stared at me for a full three seconds. โWow, thatโs really blunt.โ
I blushed in embarrassment and gave a nervous laugh. โItโs justโฆ the way you switch up your whole vibe is kind of intense.โ
โRelax, Iโm totally normal. No split personalities, I promise. But if you still think thereโs something wrong with me, I can show you my health report, alright? Ms. Murphy?โ
Looks like I really did get under his skin. Still, that health reportโฆ honestly, I wouldnโt mind taking a peek.
โSeriously? I mean, when two people are into each other, swapping health reports is just another way to show respect,โ I joked, rolling with it.
โVictoriaโฆโ Ryanโs face flushed red in embarrassment. โI donโt have anyโฆ performance issues.โ
I nearly jumped. Where did his mind even go? Itโs not just about thatโthere are a ton of other things that could be wrong!
โDonโt be so touchy about itโitโs just us being responsible, you know? I think itโs totally normal,โ I said, thinking about how many nasty diseases are out there these days.
Ryan was so annoyed he just shut down on me. Guess I really bruised his ego.
โRyan, want some coffee?โ I quickly grabbed the pot and poured him a cup.
Ryan, grumpy, asked, โHave you thought about what I said earlier?โ
โYou mean about breaking up with Nathan?โ
Ryan turned to look at me. โYeah, I never do anything without a reason. Iโm only helping because I want you and Nathan to break up.โ
I let out a soft sigh. โAlright, Iโll really think it over.โ
โAnd while youโre thinking it over, you canโt be with him,โ Ryan said, his voice thick with frustration. โYou know what I mean.โ
I nodded. I understood.
โAlright, I wonโt,โ I promised.
Ryan took a few sips of coffee, and just then, his phone rang. He looked annoyed. โTheyโre really on my tailโalready tracked me down to Hachester.โ
โIs it Uncle Ryanโs people?โ I asked, feeling a bit nervous.
Ryan shot me a glance and said flatly, โNo, itโs my all-knowing butler.โ
I just said โoh,โ not daring to mention Uncle Ryan again.
Ryan stood up, looking a bit resigned. โIโve got to head back to Shaville.โ
โAlright, but what about the Chancellor Familyโฆโ I really hoped Ryan could help out. I still wanted to see Nathan back in his primeโafter all, a manโs career is his best armor. Even if things were over between us, as long as I invested in him, heโd be my top general on the battlefield.
This was thrillingโwas it finally my turn to strike it rich?
โDonโt worry, Iโve got it covered,โ Ryan said, giving me a deep, meaningful look. โAnd donโt forget my special birthday gift for my zodiac year.โ
I nodded.
When I walked Ryan to the door, he was reluctant to leave and gave me a gentle kiss on the forehead. โSorry, I only pushed you because I was so worked up earlier.โ
โJust donโt do that again,โ I said firmly. From now on, whenever I deal with a guy, Iโm setting the ground rules firstโno matter what, there have to be boundaries.
Ryan was speechless.
Seeing how serious I was, Ryan could only smile. โAlright, I get it. Liking someone starts with respect.โ
I watched him step into the elevator, and only after he was gone did I head back to my roomโmy heart beating a little faster than usual.
As night fell, out of the blue, I got a call from an unknown number. A crisp, elegant female voice came through: โVictoria, this is Emily Chancellor. I know youโre back in Hachester. Can we meet?โ
