Listen to this chapter:

โ€œRyan, youโ€™re so good to me. Iโ€™m afraid Iโ€™ll never be able to make it up to you,โ€ I said softly.

โ€œI never asked you to give anything back. I just want to see you keep moving forward. Someday, our paths will cross again,โ€ Ryan replied with a smile, slipping right back into that easy, refined charm of his.

I blinked, feeling like that dark, brooding side of him from just now was a whole different person.

Waitโ€ฆ does he actually have a split personality? One lurking in the shadows, the other out in the open?

โ€œRyan, I hope you donโ€™t mind me asking, but do you have a therapist?โ€ I looked at him seriously.

Ryan frowned. โ€œWhy are you asking?โ€

โ€œHave you ever checked if you might have, like, a split personality or something?โ€

Ryan stared at me for a full three seconds. โ€œWow, thatโ€™s really blunt.โ€

I blushed in embarrassment and gave a nervous laugh. โ€œItโ€™s justโ€ฆ the way you switch up your whole vibe is kind of intense.โ€

โ€œRelax, Iโ€™m totally normal. No split personalities, I promise. But if you still think thereโ€™s something wrong with me, I can show you my health report, alright? Ms. Murphy?โ€

Looks like I really did get under his skin. Still, that health reportโ€ฆ honestly, I wouldnโ€™t mind taking a peek.

โ€œSeriously? I mean, when two people are into each other, swapping health reports is just another way to show respect,โ€ I joked, rolling with it.

โ€œVictoriaโ€ฆโ€ Ryanโ€™s face flushed red in embarrassment. โ€œI donโ€™t have anyโ€ฆ performance issues.โ€

I nearly jumped. Where did his mind even go? Itโ€™s not just about thatโ€“there are a ton of other things that could be wrong!

โ€œDonโ€™t be so touchy about itโ€“itโ€™s just us being responsible, you know? I think itโ€™s totally normal,โ€ I said, thinking about how many nasty diseases are out there these days.

Ryan was so annoyed he just shut down on me. Guess I really bruised his ego.

โ€œRyan, want some coffee?โ€ I quickly grabbed the pot and poured him a cup.

Ryan, grumpy, asked, โ€œHave you thought about what I said earlier?โ€

โ€œYou mean about breaking up with Nathan?โ€

Ryan turned to look at me. โ€œYeah, I never do anything without a reason. Iโ€™m only helping because I want you and Nathan to break up.โ€

I let out a soft sigh. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll really think it over.โ€

โ€œAnd while youโ€™re thinking it over, you canโ€™t be with him,โ€ Ryan said, his voice thick with frustration. โ€œYou know what I mean.โ€

I nodded. I understood.

โ€œAlright, I wonโ€™t,โ€ I promised.

Ryan took a few sips of coffee, and just then, his phone rang. He looked annoyed. โ€œTheyโ€™re really on my tailโ€“already tracked me down to Hachester.โ€

โ€œIs it Uncle Ryanโ€™s people?โ€ I asked, feeling a bit nervous.

Ryan shot me a glance and said flatly, โ€œNo, itโ€™s my all-knowing butler.โ€

I just said โ€œoh,โ€ not daring to mention Uncle Ryan again.

Ryan stood up, looking a bit resigned. โ€œIโ€™ve got to head back to Shaville.โ€

โ€œAlright, but what about the Chancellor Familyโ€ฆโ€ I really hoped Ryan could help out. I still wanted to see Nathan back in his primeโ€“after all, a manโ€™s career is his best armor. Even if things were over between us, as long as I invested in him, heโ€™d be my top general on the battlefield.

This was thrillingโ€“was it finally my turn to strike it rich?

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ve got it covered,โ€ Ryan said, giving me a deep, meaningful look. โ€œAnd donโ€™t forget my special birthday gift for my zodiac year.โ€

I nodded.

When I walked Ryan to the door, he was reluctant to leave and gave me a gentle kiss on the forehead. โ€œSorry, I only pushed you because I was so worked up earlier.โ€

โ€œJust donโ€™t do that again,โ€ I said firmly. From now on, whenever I deal with a guy, Iโ€™m setting the ground rules firstโ€“no matter what, there have to be boundaries.

Ryan was speechless.

Seeing how serious I was, Ryan could only smile. โ€œAlright, I get it. Liking someone starts with respect.โ€

I watched him step into the elevator, and only after he was gone did I head back to my roomโ€“my heart beating a little faster than usual.

As night fell, out of the blue, I got a call from an unknown number. A crisp, elegant female voice came through: โ€œVictoria, this is Emily Chancellor. I know youโ€™re back in Hachester. Can we meet?โ€
