Chapter 426

I followed him into his office. Back in the day, this place was off-limits to me. Iโ€™d always feel on edge when I came here, worried Iโ€™d mess with his work if I stayed too long.

But now, I was sitting calmly on his couch, sipping the coffee he brewed himself.

Jared looked me over twice. โ€œAny progress with Nathanโ€™s side?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re asking me? How should I know?โ€ I really had no clue. Nathan never talked to me about his problems.

Jared tapped his fingers on the desk. โ€œIf you two werenโ€™t so close, Iโ€™d actually consider investing in his company.โ€

I glanced at him. โ€œMr. Holcomb, are you here to make money or just letting your feelings get in the way?โ€

Jared said, sounding a little resentful, โ€œYeah, maybe I am. I just canโ€™t stand seeing you and him together.โ€

I set my coffee cup down and gave a light laugh. โ€œSuit yourselfโ€“if youโ€™re not investing, someone else will. Tech and clean energy are the future, and Iโ€™m pretty confident about my choices.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not actually thinking of putting your own money in, are you? Victoria, whereโ€™s your common sense? Do you only get sharp when youโ€™re arguing with me, but when it comes to him, you just turn into a lovesick fool?โ€ Jared sounded genuinely frustrated, like I hadnโ€™t thought this through at all.

I shot him a playful smile. โ€œI just want my money to make more money. Isnโ€™t that what you believe too, Mr. Holcomb? You said yourself his project looks promising.โ€

โ€œBut with the Chancellor family in the wayโ€ฆโ€ Jared paused, narrowing his eyes. โ€œVictoria, donโ€™t tell me you went to Ryan for help?โ€

I was caught off guard. That was exactly what Ryan and I had just discussed, and Jared had already figured it out. He was always quick to catch on.

I didnโ€™t say a word, just met his gaze.

Jared raised an eyebrow. โ€œSo, youโ€™ve finally learned to leverage your network and resources for your own benefit.โ€

I replied in a calm voice, โ€œHey, making money together isnโ€™t something to be ashamed of.โ€

โ€œSo Ryanโ€™s got his eye on you, huh? What kind of deal did you strike with him? Donโ€™t tell me youโ€™re planning to enjoy the best of both worlds with two guys.โ€ Jaredโ€™s face clouded over. โ€œAnd donโ€™t even say you picked up that trick from me.โ€

I took a sip of coffee and said, โ€œJared, I used to put way too much weight on romance and all that drama. Now I see loveโ€™s not just about feelingsโ€“itโ€™s a high-level game. It can make me happy, and it can be a resource. If it works for me, why not use it?โ€

Jared stared at me, clearly stunned.

But I stayed calm as ever. โ€œGrowing up means learning to let go of some thingsโ€“like baggage, negativity, and all that pessimism. And if a relationship feels off, you should kick it to the curb and keep moving forward.โ€

Jaredโ€™s handsome face went pale, and he looked at me, frustrated and sad. โ€œOh yeah? An uncomfortable relationship? Didnโ€™t seem like you were uncomfortable when you were with me, though.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because you never really noticed just how well women can fake it,โ€ I said, giving him a soft, teasing smile.

Jared just stared at me, lost for words.

I kept pushing his buttons. โ€œYou guys love to call the shotsโ€“whether itโ€™s in relationships, in life, or even in bed.โ€

โ€œWomen get really good at pretending youโ€™re the one in charge.โ€

โ€œSo you must be a pro at it now,โ€ Jared chuckled.

I let out a soft laugh. โ€œYeah, I guess. But you know, pretending gets old after a whileโ€“you just get tired of it.โ€

Jared gave me a long, complicated look. Then he leaned back in his chair, his voice husky. โ€œFunny, isnโ€™t it? Back then, when you were the one chasing me, I didnโ€™t care. Now youโ€™re standing right here, but it feels like thereโ€™s this invisible wall between us. Victoria, do you think thereโ€™ll ever be a day I can break it down?โ€

I paused, thinking, โ€œThere he goes again, with his dramatic lines!"

โ€œWell, you should keep working out, just in case. Who knows, maybe youโ€™ll get your shot,โ€ I said, getting ready to leave.

Out of the blue, Jared asked, โ€œDo you think the Jennings family will step in?โ€

I turned back to look at him.

โ€œIf thereโ€™s money to be made, letโ€™s make it together.โ€ There was an ambitious glint in Jaredโ€™s eyes as he grinned. โ€œIโ€™m worried your investment might be risky, so Iโ€™ll shoulder half the risk with you.โ€
