Listen to this chapter:

I looked at him in disbelief. โ€œWhy did you come all the way here?โ€

Nathanโ€™s eyes sparkled with a touch of delight. โ€œI just wanted to see if you were really gone.โ€

โ€œYou knew you might be wasting your time, but you still showed up?โ€ I joked.

โ€œWell, sometimes you have to take a leap to find out what happens. If I hadnโ€™t come, I wouldnโ€™t have this pleasant surprise,โ€ Nathan replied, his voice deep and a little rough.

I glanced back at my freshly cleaned living room. โ€œWell, you showed up just in time. I was about to head out.โ€

The look in Nathanโ€™s eyes dimmed a little. โ€œYouโ€™re leaving already?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah, I donโ€™t like driving at night. Itโ€™s still light out, and the highway should be clear.โ€

Nathanโ€™s gaze was full of warmth as he nodded. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll walk you down.โ€

I locked the door and walked beside him to the elevator.

โ€œDid you manage to sort out your companyโ€™s cash flow issues?โ€ I asked him.

Nathan let out a soft sigh. โ€œIโ€™ve talked to a few peopleโ€“some are open to it, but the Chancellor familyโ€™s network runs deep. With them standing in the way, nobodyโ€™s going to make a move anytime soon. Everyoneโ€™s just looking out for their own interests.โ€

I knew this wasnโ€™t something that could be fixed overnight.

โ€œIf the Chancellor family stops interfering, I want to invest in your company,โ€ I said, cutting straight to the chase.

โ€œVictoria, donโ€™t put your money in just yet. Iโ€™m still on shaky ground,โ€ Nathan said seriously, trying to talk me out of it. โ€œIf you really want a stake, wait until Iโ€™ve turned things aroundโ€“then Iโ€™ll sell you some shares at a discount.โ€

I just smiled. โ€œIf I only show up when things are going well, who am I really? Nathan, I believe in your tech. Iโ€™m not investing because of feelingsโ€“Iโ€™m here to make money.โ€

Nathanโ€™s handsome face went stiff as he stared at me for a long time, a hint of defeat in his eyes. โ€œLook, I knowโ€“if the company ever gets back on its feet, Iโ€™ll make sure you get your investment back many times over. But right now, everythingโ€™s a mess. The Chancellor family put two choices in front of me: give up the company, or marry Emily Chancellor. Honestly, neither of those is even an option for me.โ€

โ€œI ran into Miss Chancellor earlier!โ€ I said as the elevator chimed and I stepped inside.

Nathan rushed in after me, his voice full of worry. โ€œDid she say anything bad about you?โ€

I looked up at him and smiled. โ€œYou think sheโ€™d say something about me?โ€

Nathanโ€™s face was full of guilt. โ€œI was worried sheโ€™d call you a homewrecker. Victoria, Iโ€™m sorryโ€“itโ€™s my fault for keeping the Chancellor family stuff from you. Thatโ€™s why you ended up getting dragged into this mess."

I let out a soft sigh. โ€œShe didnโ€™t say anything bad about me. Actually, she seemed really worried about you. Nathan, I think Miss Chancellor is actually pretty nice. Maybe you should think about it.โ€

โ€œIf I never truly chose her from the beginning, every decision after that would just be one mistake after another, until thereโ€™s no way to fix it,โ€ Nathan said, his voice steady. Heโ€™s a stubborn guy, not the type to be forced into anything, and heโ€™s looking at this with a clear head.

I stared at him, nodding in agreement. โ€œYouโ€™re right. If you donโ€™t love her, even if you do everything a husbandโ€™s supposed to, sheโ€™ll know your heartโ€™s not in it. Over time, her resentment will just grow, and sheโ€™ll end up miserable. If she didnโ€™t love you, it wouldnโ€™t matter, but she does. Loveโ€™s a two-way street.โ€

Nathanโ€™s eyes softened as he gently held one of my fingers. โ€œVictoria, thank you for understanding me.โ€

I quietly pulled my hand back, my voice low. โ€œItโ€™s not that I understand youโ€“itโ€™s just that Iโ€™ve walked this road myself. I know what it feels like to be a woman unloved in her marriage.โ€

Nathan looked at my hand, a bit taken aback.

The elevator doors slid open to the underground parking lot, and I stepped out.

Nathan followed me over to my car.

I looked at him and said, โ€œIf you canโ€™t think of anything to say, just wish me a safe drive."

Nathan gave me a gentle look and nodded. โ€œDrive safe. Text me when you get to Shaville, okay?โ€

I gave him a small smile, slipped into the car, waved goodbye, and drove away.

I drove straight through, my mind clear, and made it back to Shaville.
