Listen to this chapter:

โ€œDonโ€™t want to be a little greedy? I really think Nathanโ€™s company is going places. Heโ€™s been tight with the government lately,โ€ Jared said.

I shrugged. โ€œGreed never ends well.โ€

โ€œYou know, your calm vibe really doesnโ€™t match that face of yours. Someone with your looks ought to be hungry for more,โ€ Jared said, and there was a heat in his gaze as he looked at me.

I tilted my head, sunlight spilling across my cheek as I squinted at him. โ€œIโ€™ve already managed to pull together all you guys' resources and put them to work for me. Isnโ€™t that ambitious enough?โ€

Jaredโ€™s face stiffened, his dark eyes fixed on me. โ€œNow that you mention it, I almost forgotโ€”Ryanโ€™s family opens doors for you, Nathanโ€™s tech brings in the cash. And me? What do I bring to the table?โ€

โ€œYou? You helped me get rid of my hopeless romantic side and actually use my brain for once. Oh, and you gave me a gorgeous, adorable daughterโ€”so youโ€™re not totally useless after all,โ€ I said, lazily twirling a strand of hair, putting on a show.

Jaredโ€™s expression shifted, stormy and uncertain. โ€œYouโ€™re walking a dangerous path. Arenโ€™t you afraid itโ€™ll all crash and burn? If Nathan finds out his companyโ€™s only back on its feet because youโ€™re planning to leave him for someone else, you really think he wonโ€™t make a scene?โ€

Jaredโ€™s warning made me sigh softly. โ€œEven if he does cause trouble, the result will be the same. And honestly, thatโ€™s probably the best outcome, donโ€™t you think?โ€

Jared was stunned, at a loss for words.

I took a sip of my coffee and turned to look out the window. โ€œThereโ€™s no end to making money, but life does have a finish line. Once I hit ten billion, Iโ€™m done. Iโ€™ll retire and live a quiet life.โ€

โ€œTen billion?โ€ Jared raised an eyebrow. โ€œPeopleโ€™s desires never stop. When you get there, youโ€™ll just want more.โ€

I looked at him, and in his eyes, I saw the calculating gaze of a true power player.

I nodded, โ€œMaybe youโ€™re right. I shouldnโ€™t lock myself into one goal. Maybe someday, when I feel like Iโ€™ve made enough, Iโ€™ll just chill, grow some flowers, keep some fish, and live easy.โ€

โ€œAnd when that day comes, whoโ€™ll be with you?โ€ Jaredโ€™s eyes went a little blank, and he asked, almost lost.

I was caught off guard. I hadnโ€™t even thought about that.

Seeing me go quiet, Jaredโ€™s face clouded over, a touch of sadness there. โ€œNathan? Or Ryan?โ€

I suddenly laughed. โ€œWhoever wants to stay with me, thatโ€™s who Iโ€™ll be with. Iโ€™m not going to force anyone.โ€

โ€œCould I be that person?โ€ Jaredโ€™s eyes were burning as he looked at me. โ€œThereโ€™s no one out there whoโ€™s a better match for you than me.โ€

โ€œWhat makes you so sure?โ€ I shot back, not hiding my annoyance.

โ€œYou push other people away and they leave, but not me. Maybe Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s supposed to take it from you,โ€ Jared said, his voice low. โ€œI still want to keep the vows we made when we got married.โ€

โ€œJared, did you take the wrong meds or are you just not sober yet?โ€ I muttered, thinking to myself that he really wasnโ€™t acting like himself right now.

Honestly, I wasnโ€™t the same me anymore either.

Jared gave his head a little shake. โ€œMaybe youโ€™re right. My headโ€™s killing me, Iโ€™m kinda out of it. Maybe Iโ€™m just rambling.โ€

I really didnโ€™t see the point in talking about this stuff, so I just wanted to drop it.

โ€œIโ€™ve got things to take care of this afternoon, so Iโ€™m gonna head out,โ€ I said, getting up and going over to settle the bill for our coffee.

Jared just sat there, watching me go. I didnโ€™t bother looking back.

I flagged down a cab and headed back to the office. While I was in the car, my phone buzzedโ€”a WeChat message had come in, with several photos attached.

I froze. Someone had secretly snapped pics of me and Jared talking at the cafรฉ.

Then a message popped up: [Itโ€™s Edward. This is my WeChat.]

I stared in shock and quickly replied: [How did you manage to add me on WeChat?]

Edward replied: [If I want to add you, I can.]

Classic bossy CEO talkโ€”seriously, where do these guys get their lines?

I fired back, annoyed: [Why the hell did you take those photos?]

Edward shot back: [If youโ€™re going to be with Ryan, then cut your ex-husband out of your life for good.] Talk about controllingโ€”he really doesnโ€™t hold back.

I couldnโ€™t help thinking Edward was way too nosy. Work is workโ€”why does he have to mix it up with my personal life?

[Sorry, but I actually like my job. Quitting isnโ€™t even on my radar,] I replied, totally cold.
