Chapter 469
โAre you leaving?โ Nathanโs voice was hoarse, maybe from the booze or something else. I nodded. โMelissaโs coming to get me. I just want to chat with her for a bit.โ Nathan glanced at the door. โSheโs not here yet. Will you keep me company in the lounge for a while?โ I glanced over and saw some fruit laid out in the lounge, so I followed him in.
The white leather sofa was super soft. I sank into it, and Nathan sat down heavily on the single chair next to me, looking totally wiped out. โYour hairโฆโ Iโd been holding back my feelings all night, but I couldnโt take it anymore. โWhatโs going on?โ
Nathan let out a bitter laugh. โDoes it look that bad?โ My eyes stung, and I shook my head. โNo, itโs not that. Itโs justโฆ why has it turned so white all of a sudden? Youโre still so young.โ Nathan glanced at his reflection in the glass and gave a wry smile. โIf you donโt think it looks bad, then I guess itโs fine.โ โWhy donโt you see a doctor? Maybe itโs something they can fix,โ I said, concern clear in my voice. โItโs nothing. I donโt really care,โ Nathan replied with a laid-back shrug. โDonโt feel bad, okay? This has nothing to do with you. Iโve just been working too much and not getting enough sleep.โ โReally?โ I stared into his eyes, but he couldnโt meet mine, his gaze flickering away. Nathanโs voice softened. โVictoria, donโt dwell on it, alright?โ I nodded. โOkay. But promise me youโll get some rest from now on, and donโt work yourself to the bone. Work never really ends, you know.โ Nathan gazed at me in silence. With no one else around, he finally let his guard down, and the raw sincerity in his eyes made my heart uneasy. He just kept looking at me, his eyes rimmed red, holding a broken glimmer that seemed ready to shatter. Seeing him like this, so close to falling apart, my heart twisted with feelings I couldnโt name. He kept saying he was fine, but deep down, I knew heโd never truly healed. โNathanโฆโ I started, but my voice faded away. โIโm sorry,โ Nathan suddenly buried his face in his hands, his voice low and trembling as he apologized. โIโm sorry, Victoria. I tried, but I just canโt do it. I canโt let you go.โ That apology hit me right in the heart. Thereโs nothing wrong with loving someoneโitโs just that our timing was all wrong. If only weโd met at the right moment, maybe we couldโve held each other tight, without holding back.
โYou didnโt do anything wrong. You donโt have to apologize. Iโm the one who failed you,โ I said, feeling guilty. Nathanโs eyes were red as he asked, โVictoria, is it alright if I wait for you?โ My heart thudded hard in my chest. โIf you say yes, Iโll wait for you, quietly. Whenever youโre ready, we can finally be together the way we should,โ Nathan blurted out, the alcohol giving him courage. I was stunned. Nathanโs love had always been restrained and genuine, something he could truly be proud of. โIโm sorry, but I canโt give you any hope,โ I whispered. His sincere waiting was too much for me to accept, so I could only turn him down. Nathanโs eyes filled with disappointment, as if my words had hit him harder than he could handle. โYou wonโt even let me wait for you?โ he asked, his voice hoarse with emotion. โItโs not that. You really donโt have to wait for me,โ I said, getting up and starting to walk out. Just then, Melissa came rushing into the hall, and I called out to stop her. She spun around, worry all over her face. โVictoria, are you alright? Did you get drunk? Did any guy mess with you? Seriously, tell me!โ Before I could say a word, Nathan came out from the door behind me. Melissaโs face broke into a grin. โWith Nathan around, I donโt have to worry about you at all.โ Nathan walked over to Melissa and said, โShe had a bit to drink. Can you look after her for me?โ Melissa thumped her chest confidently. โRelax, Nathan. Victoriaโs with meโnothingโs gonna happen to her.โ Nathanโs eyes were shadowed with loneliness as he glanced at me. โIโm heading upstairs. Thereโs a shareholdersโ meeting tomorrow, so youโll need to come by and sign the papers.โ โOkay, Iโll be there,โ I said, then headed out with Melissa. Her car was parked a bit farther away, and she grumbled, โA bunch of official cars showed up earlier, and now the entrance is packed.โ I glanced over and, sure enough, there were several cars parked out front, including two really imposing sedans. โWait a sec, Victoria, I think I just spotted the deputy mayor and a few other officials. Iโm gonna go say hi,โ Melissa said, clearly on a roll with networking lately. She ditched me and practically jogged over to mingle and get her face known with the group. Melissa was a natural at thisโslick and savvy, always knowing what to say. She probably really had met those officials before, because she walked up with a friendly smile and greeted each of them like an old acquaintance.
