Suddenly, he pulled me around to face him, about to kiss me. I dodged and shot back, โNathan handed me five percent of his companyโs stock. Do you honestly think I still need your cash?โ
The whole flirty vibe instantly iced over. Jared let go of me, and even in the darkness, I could see the shock written all over his face.
โWhy would he give you that much stock?โ Jaredโs voice was tight with anger, barely holding it together. โWhat is he really after?โ
I let out a cold laugh. โHe said I was his benefactorโheโs just grateful I helped him through two rough patches.โ
Jaredโs breathing was ragged, his voice tight with frustration. โSo he gave it to you, and you just accepted it? Donโt you get it? By taking his money, youโre giving him every right to sleep with you.โ
โJared, what right do you have to judge me?โ I asked coldly.
Jared suddenly fell silent, slumping against the wall. Even his usually perfect hair was a mess now.
I walked over and switched the lights back on. Jared just stood there, looking totally defeated. โI forgotโyou like money, but youโre not exactly short of it. There are plenty of people lining up to throw cash your way.โ
I didnโt even bother to answer him, my tone cold and flat. โJust go.โ
Jared looked totally wrecked as he yanked the door open and left.
Watching him practically run away, I couldnโt help but feel a little smug. In my previous life, I was the one slinking off in humiliation, while he flaunted his "Nove" with Tracy.
The next morning, I was half-asleep when I felt something poking at my arm. I opened my eyes and saw Yvonne trying to snuggle up to me.
โMomโฆ itโs really you! Dad wasnโt lyingโyou really came back!โ Yvonne cheered, clinging to my arm, all excited.
I reached out and cupped her little face, then pushed myself up to sit.
Yvonne blinked at me. โMom, itโs not the weekend. How come youโre home too?โ
โI came back because of work,โ I explained.
โOh, okay,โ Yvonne replied.
I checked the time and said, โTime to get up. Iโll take you downstairs for breakfast, and your dad will come pick you up for school.โ
Yvonne blinked at me, a little dazed. โMom, you used to make breakfast for me yourself.โ
โI donโt have time for that now,โ I said, gathering my long hair as I stood by the bed, my voice flat.
Yvonne looked a bit disappointed, but I didnโt really care.
I had to go to Nathanโs company today to sign a few agreements, so I slipped into a royal blue dress and braided my long hair into a princess style. Sitting at my vanity, I looked vibrant and youthful as I carefully did my makeup.
Yvonne got herself dressed, then propped her chin in her hand and watched me. โMom, you look so pretty.โ
I smiled. โReally?โ
โYeah, youโre getting more and more beautiful. Dadโs falling for you all over again,โ Yvonne said earnestly.
โJaredโs really saying stuff like that to you?โ I couldnโt believe heโd talk to Yvonne about this kind of thing.
โYeah! Dad said heโs going to work super hard and make tons of money so he can marry you again,โ Yvonne chirped.
I froze with my makeup brush in hand and looked at her.
Yvonne snuggled up to my arm like a little kitten. โMom, will you ever get back together with Dad?โ
โNo, I wonโt.โ I didnโt want to lie to her or give her any false hope.
Yvonne didnโt seem upset at all. She just grinned and asked, โSo, are you going to marry Nathan or Ryan?โ
I was caught off guard. Where did she get that idea? I wondered.
โWhat do you know about all this?โ I asked, knowing she was always more mature than other kids her age.
โI was eavesdropping on Dad and Grandma. Dadโs worried you might end up marrying either Nathan or Ryan, and Grandma totally tore into him, called him useless.โ Yvonne snickered, showing off her gap-toothed grin.
โWhy are you always listening in on their conversations?โ I frowned. โThatโs not a good habit.โ
โBut Mom, Iโm just trying to protect you! I donโt want them talking bad about you,โ Yvonne said, her little face all pouty.
โEven if youโre trying to help, you canโt keep doing that. Youโre still a kidโyou should be focusing on your studies, not this kind of stuff.โ I couldnโt help worrying; I hadnโt taught her any of this, but Sally would probably pin it all on me anyway, and thereโd be no way to talk my way out of it.
โOkay, but Mom, who are you really going to marry?โ Yvonne tugged at my arm, refusing to let go. โCome on, just tell me, please?โ
