Chapter 480

โ€œOh? What exactly do you miss about me?โ€ I teased, my tone playful.

โ€œI just want to be with you,โ€ Ryan admitted, his handsome face suddenly flushing red.

Once youโ€™ve tasted real passion, thereโ€™s no going backโ€“his fantasies about love and sex had been shattered, and now that heโ€™d had the real thing, quitting was out of the question. Itโ€™s only natural to miss someone.

โ€œMaybe Iโ€™ll consider it when you get here from Braylin,โ€ I said with a teasing smile.

Ryanโ€™s eyes went wide, and he sounded almost breathless. โ€œSeriously? Then Iโ€™ll come tomorrow!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be so reckless,โ€ I said, honestly not expecting him to actually move up his plans so fast.

โ€œYou have no idea how much Iโ€™m missing youโ€“itโ€™s driving me crazy,โ€ Ryan said, sounding all pitiful.

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€˜Of course I get it. How could I not?โ€™ Jared had once made me feel the exact same wayโ€”loving someone you just canโ€™t have.

Before I could say anything, Ryanโ€™s face suddenly turned serious. โ€œVic, I need to hang up for now, something just came up on my end.โ€

I watched him hang up in a rush, and it was like my heart had been left dangling in mid-airโ€“then, out of nowhere, the string snapped and I crashed right back down.

Whoever could freak Ryan out like that was definitely no ordinary person. Maybe it was his grandpa.

โ€˜Is Ryan actually scared of his grandpa finding out about me?โ€™ I wondered to myself.

The more I thought about it, the more confused I felt inside.

Iโ€™ve always kept a rational and somewhat pessimistic outlook on this relationship. Of course, even if things fall apart, it wonโ€™t get to me. Iโ€™ll still look after myself, no matter what.

Jaredโ€™s plan to open a new store in Braylin had faced some pushback from the board, but he pushed through despite the opposition and made it happen. The official documents landed on my desk, and as I looked through them, I realized he was really putting me in charge of everything.

The renovations in Shaville were almost finished, and the operations team was already working hard to boost our online presence and ramp up the publicity.

Jared asked me to recommend someone capable to take over my position.

I actually had someone in mindโ€“a middle-aged guy whoโ€™d already proven himself to be exceptionally capable when he worked under me.

When he found out I was the one who put his name forward, he thanked me with real sincerity and said heโ€™d never forget the opportunity I gave him. He promised that if I ever needed anything, heโ€™d have my back, no questions asked.

Thatโ€™s what connections are all aboutโ€“helping each other out and exchanging favors.

The handover would take about a week, and then, out of the blue, Amy showed up at my office door. She looked like sheโ€™d lost some of her usual confidence.

โ€œMs. Murphy, want to grab lunch together?โ€ Amy asked, trying to sound casual.

I nodded.

At the restaurant, Amy kept sizing me up, and I already had a pretty good idea why sheโ€™d invited me to lunch.

Either she wanted me to keep her in the loop about Jared, or she just couldnโ€™t let things go and was trying to figure out what went wrong.

โ€œIโ€™ve heard youโ€™ve never lacked admirers since you started working here. Being good looking is like having a giftโ€“no matter how much others might resent it, they just have to accept it,โ€ Amy murmured to herself.

I took a sip of water and asked, โ€œSo, still no progress with Jared?โ€

โ€œMs. Murphy, why are you asking when you already know the answer?โ€ Amy replied, clearly not in the best mood.

I smiled. โ€œI havenโ€™t tried to sabotage you or anything. Maybe you just need to put in a bit more effort.โ€

Amy let out a dry laugh. โ€œHonestly, I wish you had gotten in the way. At least then Iโ€™d have someone to blame for failing, and Iโ€™d feel a little better about it.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œI donโ€™t have any feelings for him anymore. Heโ€™s just my daughterโ€™s father.โ€

โ€œI can tell,โ€ Amy said, shooting me a knowing look. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve noticed whatโ€™s going on between you and Nathan. Mr. Holcomb was seriously jealous.โ€

I knew gossip gets everywhere, slipping into every corner of your life.

โ€œMy relationship with Nathan is over too. Weโ€™re just business partners now,โ€ I said, not wanting the rumors to keep going.

Amyโ€™s eyes darted slyly. โ€œYou even ditched Nathan, and now youโ€™ve landed yourself an even bigger big shot.โ€

โ€œStop it,โ€ I cut her off, not letting her run wild with her theories. โ€œEveryoneโ€™s got their own ambitions and choices, so we all end up on different paths.โ€

โ€œMr. Holcomb is giving you full control of the Braylin project? Youโ€™re heading all the way out there? Isnโ€™t it weird heโ€™s just letting you go like that?โ€ Amy said, sipping her coffee with a sarcastic edge.

โ€œMe moving far away just means Iโ€™m clearing the way for you, isnโ€™t it?โ€ I said with a smile.

โ€œIf I keep pushing my luck, do you think Mr. Holcomb wonโ€™t fire me by tomorrow?โ€ Amy said with a bitter smile. โ€œHeโ€™s made it pretty clearโ€“he doesnโ€™t do casual flings.โ€

I looked at her in surprise. Amy never struck me as someone whoโ€™d give up easily, but right now, she looked like a hen that just lost a fight, all her usual fire gone. โ€˜Did Jared really say something that harsh to her?โ€™ I wondered.

Amy shook her head. โ€œBetween my career and men, Iโ€™m choosing my career. Itโ€™s not like Iโ€™m lacking options when it comes to guys, and Mr. Holcomb is a great bossโ€“I donโ€™t want to lose that.โ€

After we finished eating, Amy shook my hand. โ€œMs. Murphy, if things go well for you in Braylin, donโ€™t forget to look out for me if you get the chance.โ€

I smiled. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t dare say Iโ€™ll be looking out for youโ€“since weโ€™re in the same company, Iโ€™m sure weโ€™ll be working together a lot, so Iโ€™ll be counting on your help down the line.โ€

Amy gave me a polite, businesslike smile, then hopped in her car and headed out.
