Chapter 483

Ryanโ€™s clear, pleasant voice made me freeze for a second. His smiling eyes had already seen through my little act.

I protested guiltily, โ€œNo, I wasnโ€™t thinking about anything like that.โ€

Ryan just gave a soft, almost mocking snort. โ€œIs it so hard for you to tell the truth? Do I really have to call you out before youโ€™ll admit it?โ€

I could feel my cheeks burning with embarrassment. I really shouldnโ€™t have underestimated him.

โ€œAhemโ€ฆโ€ I took a sip of water and ended up choking on it, making myself look even more suspicious.

A flicker of disappointment crossed Ryanโ€™s face. He twirled his glass between his fingers, his voice tinged with hurt. โ€œVic, I donโ€™t want to pressure you, but I thought we were actually dating seriously now.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to take advantage of you,โ€ I said stubbornly. โ€œSome lines, once crossed, you canโ€™t go back.โ€

He stared at me, stunned. โ€œThatโ€™s not a reason Iโ€™ll accept.โ€

I met his gaze, dead serious. โ€œWhat if Iโ€™m just messing with you? Would you be fine with that?โ€

Ryan clearly hadnโ€™t expected me to be so blunt. His handsome face went from red to pale and back again, and finally, he bit his lip. โ€œIโ€™m not afraid of a little game myself.โ€

I burst out laughing. โ€œAre you sure you even know how to play these grown-up games?โ€

Without a word, Ryan downed his cocktail in one gulp, then stood up and stalked over to me with the sleek, dangerous grace of a predator.

โ€œVic, donโ€™t underestimate me,โ€ Ryan said, suddenly reaching out to tilt my chin up with a teasing edge. โ€œHonestly, I think the one who might not be able to handle it is you.โ€

I sucked in a breath. That wicked, irresistible look on Ryanโ€™s face was almost too much for me to handle.

His fingers traced lightly over my soft skin. โ€œRelax. However you want to play, Iโ€™ll play along. But once we start, thereโ€™s no backing out halfway.โ€

I felt myself getting all flustered, totally caught up in his teasing. I knew he was just talking about a game, but I couldnโ€™t help letting my mind wander to something a lot less innocent.

I gently brushed his fingers away. โ€œQuit messing around. Letโ€™s eat.โ€

Seeing me get all serious, Ryan looked a bit helpless. โ€œSo, have you really ended things with Hallman?โ€

I was honest with him. โ€œWe talked it out. Heโ€™s okay with it.โ€

Ryanโ€™s lips curled into a happy grin. โ€œIs that so? So youโ€™re single now? Looks like weโ€™re both single. What a coincidence.โ€

I gave him a helpless look, seeing right through his sly little tricks.

Ryan settled back into his seat, and maybe it was the sensitive topic, but his whole aura shifted.

Heโ€™d gone from a well-behaved puppy to a young alpha wolf, and the way he looked at me now was full of dominance.

My breath quickened. This side of Ryanโ€”magnetic and seductiveโ€”was something Iโ€™d never seen before.

โ€œAlright, letโ€™s eat,โ€ he said, giving me a meaningful look and a smile that hinted at so much more.

With Ryanโ€™s eyes burning into me, my appetite vanished. I just poked at my food and kept reaching for my water, suddenly feeling parched.

Just as we were finishing up, Ryanโ€™s phone rang.

He glanced down at the screen. โ€œItโ€™s Uncle Ryan.โ€

My heart sank. I thought heโ€™d step outside to take the call, but to my surprise, Ryan just answered it right there at the table.

โ€œIโ€™m not coming home tonight,โ€ he said.

โ€œUncle Ryan, Iโ€™m not a kid anymore. You really think I canโ€™t find a place to sleep?โ€ Ryan said, sounding confident.

โ€œRelax, someone already promised to take me in,โ€ he added, a playful note in his voice.

โ€œWhat? Youโ€™re sick? What happened?โ€ Ryan said, suddenly jumping up from his chair.

My hand froze on my water glass as I stared at his phone.

Ryanโ€™s tone softened with concern. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll come over.โ€

He hung up, his face shadowed with worry. โ€œUncle Ryanโ€™s caught a cold. Come with me, letโ€™s go see him together.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I think Iโ€™ll pass,โ€ I mumbled, nervously glancing away as I sipped my water.

I just wanted to keep as much distance from Edward as possible.

โ€œVic, weโ€™re basically family now. Weโ€™re bound to run into each other sooner or later. You canโ€™t keep dodging him,โ€ Ryan said, circling behind me and resting his hand lightly around my neck. He leaned in, his voice gentle right by my ear. โ€œCome with me, okay?โ€

With him asking so softly, it wouldโ€™ve felt rude to turn him down.

โ€œFine,โ€ I sighed, giving in.

I drove us to Edwardโ€™s villa.

The master bedroom on the second floor was brightly lit. Edward was sitting up in bed, wearing gray pajamas.

He had an IV in his left arm, and a doctor and nurse were standing nearby.
