Chapter 483
Ryanโs clear, pleasant voice made me freeze for a second. His smiling eyes had already seen through my little act.
I protested guiltily, โNo, I wasnโt thinking about anything like that.โ
Ryan just gave a soft, almost mocking snort. โIs it so hard for you to tell the truth? Do I really have to call you out before youโll admit it?โ
I could feel my cheeks burning with embarrassment. I really shouldnโt have underestimated him.
โAhemโฆโ I took a sip of water and ended up choking on it, making myself look even more suspicious.
A flicker of disappointment crossed Ryanโs face. He twirled his glass between his fingers, his voice tinged with hurt. โVic, I donโt want to pressure you, but I thought we were actually dating seriously now.โ
โI donโt want to take advantage of you,โ I said stubbornly. โSome lines, once crossed, you canโt go back.โ
He stared at me, stunned. โThatโs not a reason Iโll accept.โ
I met his gaze, dead serious. โWhat if Iโm just messing with you? Would you be fine with that?โ
Ryan clearly hadnโt expected me to be so blunt. His handsome face went from red to pale and back again, and finally, he bit his lip. โIโm not afraid of a little game myself.โ
I burst out laughing. โAre you sure you even know how to play these grown-up games?โ
Without a word, Ryan downed his cocktail in one gulp, then stood up and stalked over to me with the sleek, dangerous grace of a predator.
โVic, donโt underestimate me,โ Ryan said, suddenly reaching out to tilt my chin up with a teasing edge. โHonestly, I think the one who might not be able to handle it is you.โ
I sucked in a breath. That wicked, irresistible look on Ryanโs face was almost too much for me to handle.
His fingers traced lightly over my soft skin. โRelax. However you want to play, Iโll play along. But once we start, thereโs no backing out halfway.โ
I felt myself getting all flustered, totally caught up in his teasing. I knew he was just talking about a game, but I couldnโt help letting my mind wander to something a lot less innocent.
I gently brushed his fingers away. โQuit messing around. Letโs eat.โ
Seeing me get all serious, Ryan looked a bit helpless. โSo, have you really ended things with Hallman?โ
I was honest with him. โWe talked it out. Heโs okay with it.โ
Ryanโs lips curled into a happy grin. โIs that so? So youโre single now? Looks like weโre both single. What a coincidence.โ
I gave him a helpless look, seeing right through his sly little tricks.
Ryan settled back into his seat, and maybe it was the sensitive topic, but his whole aura shifted.
Heโd gone from a well-behaved puppy to a young alpha wolf, and the way he looked at me now was full of dominance.
My breath quickened. This side of Ryanโmagnetic and seductiveโwas something Iโd never seen before.
โAlright, letโs eat,โ he said, giving me a meaningful look and a smile that hinted at so much more.
With Ryanโs eyes burning into me, my appetite vanished. I just poked at my food and kept reaching for my water, suddenly feeling parched.
Chapter 463
Just as we were finishing up, Ryanโs phone rang.
He glanced down at the screen. โItโs Uncle Ryan.โ
My heart sank. I thought heโd step outside to take the call, but to my surprise, Ryan just answered it right there at the table.
โIโm not coming home tonight,โ he said.
โUncle Ryan, Iโm not a kid anymore. You really think I canโt find a place to sleep?โ Ryan said, sounding confident.
โRelax, someone already promised to take me in,โ he added, a playful note in his voice.
โWhat? Youโre sick? What happened?โ Ryan said, suddenly jumping up from his chair.
My hand froze on my water glass as I stared at his phone.
Ryanโs tone softened with concern. โAlright, Iโll come over.โ
He hung up, his face shadowed with worry. โUncle Ryanโs caught a cold. Come with me, letโs go see him together.โ
โIโฆ I think Iโll pass,โ I mumbled, nervously glancing away as I sipped my water.
I just wanted to keep as much distance from Edward as possible.
โVic, weโre basically family now. Weโre bound to run into each other sooner or later. You canโt keep dodging him,โ Ryan said, circling behind me and resting his hand lightly around my neck. He leaned in, his voice gentle right by my ear. โCome with me, okay?โ
With him asking so softly, it wouldโve felt rude to turn him down.
โFine,โ I sighed, giving in.
I drove us to Edwardโs villa.
The master bedroom on the second floor was brightly lit. Edward was sitting up in bed, wearing gray pajamas.
He had an IV in his left arm, and a doctor and nurse were standing nearby.
