Chapter 492

Ryan shot me a mock glare. โ€œYouโ€™re really not shy at all.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need to be polite with you,โ€ I teased.

Ryan sighed, a mix of exasperation and affection in his eyes, as he wrapped an arm around my shoulders. โ€œAlright, then donโ€™t hold back.โ€

When Ryan put his arm around me, I tensed up for a moment, but then I let myself relax. โ€˜Why am I still so jumpy around him?โ€™ I thought, but his warmth made it easy to melt into his embrace.

The butler came over, greeted me politely, and said, โ€œMr. Jennings, Iโ€™m heading out to pick up a few things. You and Ms. Murphy go ahead and start lunch.โ€

โ€œMake sure to get enough,โ€ Ryan reminded him with a gentle nod.

The butler shot Ryan a look that said โ€˜got it,โ€™ then headed out and drove away.

I turned to Ryan right away. โ€œWhatโ€™s he even going out to get? Arenโ€™t you leaving for Braylin this afternoon?โ€

Ryan reached out and pinched my earlobe, his lips curled in a mischievous half-smile. โ€œVic, youโ€™re just too adorable.โ€

I froze for a second, then it hit me. I shot him a glare. โ€œYou totally sent him away on purpose.โ€

โ€œI was worried youโ€™d be too loudโ€ฆโ€ he said, smirking.

โ€œShut up!โ€ I pinched his side hard, and Ryan immediately put on a pleading face. โ€œOuch! Vic, I wonโ€™t do it again.โ€

I let go, but my face was still burning. Too lateโ€”last night I was way too into it, and now Ryan was still totally caught up in the afterglow.

โ€˜God, this is so embarrassing I could just die,โ€™ I thought.

Ryan pulled out a chair for me. โ€œSit here,โ€ he said gently.

I walked over and sat down, and saw five dishes and a soup laid out on the tableโ€”it was a real feast.

โ€œGo ahead and try it. See if you like how it tastes,โ€ Ryan said, his voice full of warmth and care.

I took a bite, and it was honestly delicious. None of that artificial, restaurant-style flavoringโ€”just real, home-cooked goodness.

Ryan picked up a piece of beef and placed it in my bowl. โ€œHave some more,โ€ he said softly.

I stared at the beef Ryan had just put in my bowl, and my heart just melted with warmth.

After we finished eating, I washed up some fruit and brought it over. Ryanโ€™s phone started blowing up with work calls, so he stepped outside to answer them.

Watching his back, I realized that the golden boy vibe he used to have was shiftingโ€”suddenly there was this air of quiet confidence about him.

Maybe he was finally leveling up from boy to man, inside and out.

Ryan came back from his call, grabbed a grape and tossed it in his mouth, then shot me a smile. โ€œThese are seriously sweet.โ€

So I tried one myselfโ€”yep, definitely sweet. Almost too sweet, probably loaded with fake sugar or something.

โ€œVic, youโ€™re even sweeter than these grapes,โ€ Ryan teased. When he saw I missed the hint, he leaned in with a playful smile and explained, โ€œI mean, youโ€™re sweeter than the fruit.โ€

I shot him a playful smile. โ€œOh yeah? Think youโ€™ll ever forget how sweet I am?โ€

Ryan shook his head, grinning. โ€œNot a chance. Iโ€™m gonna remember it for the rest of my life.โ€

โ€œWhat ifโ€ฆ I mean, what if you lost your memory? How would you remember me then?โ€ I teased.

โ€œLost my memory?โ€ Ryan chuckled, pinching my cheek playfully. โ€œEven if I ended up in hell, Iโ€™d crawl back to find you. Forget about losing my memory.โ€

Realizing this was getting way too dramatic, I quickly stood on my tiptoes and leaned in for a quick kiss on his lips. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, thatโ€™s never gonna happen.โ€

Ryanโ€™s whole face lit up, happiness shining in his eyes as he pulled me into his arms, his lips lingering softly on mine. โ€œYeah, it wonโ€™t. When you come to Braylin, weโ€™ll keep living just like thisโ€”just the two of us, happy together.โ€

Stunned, I pushed him away, disbelief all over my face. โ€œI just never pictured you as the kind of guy whoโ€™d want a quiet, steady life with someone.โ€

โ€˜I was being honest,โ€™ I thought. โ€˜At Ryanโ€™s age, heโ€™s got that fire in himโ€”the kind of ambition that wants to take on the whole world. Guys like him are always looking outward, chasing bigger things. How could he possibly be content just living an ordinary life with one woman?โ€™

โ€œDonโ€™t sell me short, Vic,โ€ Ryan put on his best puppy-dog eyes, looking all innocent and hurt. โ€œHonestly, I dream about having a cozy place to call home, and someone waiting for me when I walk through the door.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€œAlright, if thereโ€™s ever a chance, Iโ€™ll be here, waiting for you.โ€

Ryan took the fruit basket from my hands and lifted me off my feet right then and there. Startled, I instinctively clung to his shoulders.

He spun me around a couple of times, then pinned me against the wall, his strong arms locking me in place as his lips crashed onto mine.
