Listen to this chapter:

โ€œSo I was just the sidekick, making your side chick look all dazzling? Youโ€™ve got some nerve.โ€ I slapped him hard. Jaredโ€™s face turned to the side, but he just calmly took off his glasses, set them on the table, and said, โ€œGo ahead, hit me, yell at meโ€“whatever helps you vent.โ€

My palm stung like hellโ€“hurting him hurt me too. It was a lose-lose situation.

I dropped my hand. No more hitting.

Jared braced himself for another slap but just looked at me gently. โ€œVictoria, you remember every stroke of my writing, even at the very end of our previous life. You still loved me, didnโ€™t you?โ€

My heart felt like itโ€™d been stabbed. I shot him a look full of hate. โ€œYouโ€™re dreaming. The moment I died, you were nothing to me.โ€

โ€˜Then why do you remember even the tiniest quirks of my handwriting?โ€™ Jaredโ€™s eyes gleamed with a crazed delight, like heโ€™d just uncovered some dark secret. โ€˜You must have been hopelessly in love with me your whole life.โ€™

โ€˜Just shut up,โ€™ I muttered, too drained to even argue anymore.

Jared actually listened, clamping his mouth shut and just standing there, gazing at me with a dazed, lovesick look.

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ I finally asked, forcing myself to accept this crazy reality.

Jared just gave me a helpless look. โ€œWhat else can I do?โ€

โ€œWhat do you want with me?โ€ I shot back, my voice icy.

Jared paused, then said, โ€œI want to make up for the mistakes I made in our previous life. I want to raise our daughter right, so she doesnโ€™t end up being a little debt collector like she was before.โ€

I was stunned, staring at him. โ€œYou actually know Yvonne was like a little debt collector in our previous life?โ€

โ€œIt was Tracy who messed her up,โ€ Jared said, his voice heavy with guilt. โ€œShe spoiled Yvonne rotten. Not long after you died, Yvonne was street racing and ended up killing someone. It turned into a huge legal mess.โ€

I kept my face blank. โ€œIn our previous life, she didnโ€™t even see me as her mother anymore. I donโ€™t care what she became.โ€

โ€œIf weโ€™d just followed the proper procedures, there wouldnโ€™t even have been a lawsuit,โ€ Jared said, squeezing his eyes shut, his body trembling. โ€œBut the first person Yvonne called was Tracy. Tracy told her to run and said sheโ€™d handle the rest. Yvonne listened, and that was when my business rival pounced. The accident made the news, and things got way worse.โ€

I let out a cold laugh. โ€œThis all happened because you spoiled Tracy so much she thought she could call the shots with your daughter.โ€

โ€œWhen I found out Yvonne had killed someone in a hit-and-run, it felt like Iโ€™d been struck by lightning. That was the moment I finally realized how Iโ€™d neglected to discipline my kid all these years,โ€ Jared said, his voice thick with regret.

โ€œTracy came running over, bawling and apologizing, but the sly look in her eyes just made me hate her.โ€ Jared lowered his gaze, voice barely audible. โ€œI was the one who screwed up, but you and Yvonne paid the price. I really was a piece of shit.โ€

โ€œSpare me the guilt trip,โ€ I cut him off coldly. I didnโ€™t want to hear his apologiesโ€“they meant nothing to me.

โ€œI know no matter how many times I die, I can never make up for what I did. Yvonne didnโ€™t get the right upbringing in our previous life, and she ended up going down the wrong path. It cost my company a fortune,โ€ Jared said, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. โ€œI guess I deserved it.โ€

I shot him a look. โ€œSo whatโ€™s your plan now? You gonna take care of Yvonne yourself?โ€

โ€œYeah, I canโ€™t let what happened last time happen again,โ€ Jared said, then glanced at me. โ€œBut Yvonne needs her mom too.โ€

I pressed my lips together, staying silent.

โ€œVictoria, I let you down for a whole lifetime before. This time, I wonโ€™t try to control you. If you want to be with someone else, Iโ€™ll accept it,โ€ Jared said, stepping closer and held my arm gently. โ€œJust promise me you wonโ€™t put yourself in harmโ€™s way, alright?โ€

โ€œAnd what exactly do you know?โ€ I replied coolly.

โ€œEdward likes you,โ€ Jared said, dropping a bombshell.
