Chapter 504

โ€œI never tried to impress you, Mr. Jennings. I really respect youโ€“like someone I look up to,โ€ I blurted out.

โ€œElder?โ€ Edwardโ€™s dark eyes narrowed. โ€œAre you trying to use seniority as a shield against me?โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t dare, but thatโ€™s just how it is,โ€ I replied, keeping my composure.

Edward tapped his long fingers lightly on the table. โ€œThe more you try to push me away, the more I find myself drawn to you. Do you get it?โ€

My heart started pounding. โ€˜This guy is such a piece of workโ€“heโ€™s always the exact opposite of normal,โ€™ I thought.

Edward raised an eyebrow. โ€œDonโ€™t be mad. Honestly, I donโ€™t want to be like this either, butโ€ฆ before I know it, I just want to see you and hear you talk.โ€

โ€œMr. Jennings, do you seriously have a thing for being mistreated?โ€ I snapped, unable to hold back. โ€˜He really shouldnโ€™t be into me at all,โ€™ I thought.

Edward nodded. โ€œEver since I was a kid, I could get anything I wantedโ€“except love. My ex-wife and I had an arranged marriage. She didnโ€™t want to marry me, and I didnโ€™t want to marry her, but we were both forced into it. After the wedding, we just kept up the act. Our families kept pushing us to have a kid, so we had to get ourselves drunk just to have a daughter. One day, she said she was done pretending, and we split up amicably.โ€

I stared at him in shock. I never wouldโ€™ve guessed his whole marriage was just pretending.

No wonder he was so good at it.

โ€œIโ€™m in my thirties, and this is the first time Iโ€™ve ever felt real longing, real heartbreak. Victoria, youโ€™re not the only one hurting,โ€ Edward said, gripping his coffee cup tight before letting go and spinning it slowly. โ€œI know itโ€™s messed up, but I canโ€™t help it. Thereโ€™s always this voice in my head, telling me to make up any excuse just to see you.โ€

My mind was a tangled mess as I stared out the window. โ€œWe canโ€™t do this. Itโ€™s just wrong.โ€

Edward looked stunned for a moment, then nodded, admitting, โ€œYeah, itโ€™s wrong.โ€

โ€œThen you need to put an end to these feelings,โ€ Victoria pleaded.

โ€œI do my best,โ€ Edward replied, glancing at me again. โ€œBut honestly, youโ€™re adorable even when youโ€™re mad. What am I supposed to do?โ€

My face went completely blank.

Edward saw me frozen like a deer in headlights and let out a quiet laugh. โ€œCome on, donโ€™t space out. Just eat something.โ€

โ€œI just canโ€™t,โ€ I said, putting down my fork. Iโ€™d completely lost my appetite.

Edward let out a sigh, sounding like heโ€™d given up on arguing with me. โ€œIโ€™ll have someone keep tabs on your brother. Relax, Iโ€™m not out to mess him up. Iโ€™ll make sure he gets the help he needs to grow, step by step, until he can stand on his own.โ€

I looked up at him in surprise.

Edward was watching me, his gaze dark and intense. โ€œIโ€™m not as terrible as you think, butโ€ฆ Iโ€™m shameless enough to use this as an excuse just to get you to notice me more.โ€

I sucked in a breath. โ€˜This guy is seriously sickโ€ฆ and itโ€™s not a minor case.โ€™

I hesitated, starting to say, โ€œMy brotherโ€™s girlfriendโ€ฆโ€

Edward cut me off, not missing a beat. โ€œI got her a job too. Now that they both have steady work, maybe theyโ€™ll tie the knot even sooner, right?โ€

Honestly, I just wanted my brother to find some stability, get married, have kids, and build a happy little family of his own.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Once weโ€™re in Braylin, I wonโ€™t be meeting you in private like this anymore,โ€ Edward said, catching my stunned look. He sighed softly. โ€œItโ€™s only here in Shaville that I can let myself act on my feelings. In Braylin, thatโ€™s just not possible.โ€

โ€œThank you for taking care of my brother, Mr. Jennings,โ€ I said, lifting my coffee cup. โ€œJust make sure you keep your promise and donโ€™t bring him any trouble, okay?โ€

Edwardโ€™s eyes grew darker, and he gave a self-deprecating chuckle. โ€œAm I really that bad?โ€

โ€œEveryone knows capitalists have ice in their veins. Being bad is just part of the deal,โ€ I joked, smiling.

Edward laughed too, tapping his coffee cup against mine. โ€œWrong. When it comes to you, my bloodโ€™s anything butโ€ฆโ€
