Chapter 510
Yvonne put her hands on her hips and fired right back, โGrandma, youโre even fiercer than Mommy! Youโre the real old tigress here!โ
โJust look at this kidโฆโ Sally was completely tornโshe didnโt know whether to laugh or blow up.
Just then, the waiter brought over the champagne. โPack it up, Iโm taking it to go,โ I said.
The waiter hurried off to get it boxed up.
Yvonne held onto my finger as we left the restaurant. Once we were in the car, she asked, โMommy, whatโs a tiger mom?โ
I smiled. โIt just means a really fierce woman.โ
โIsnโt it good for a woman to be fierce? Iโm pretty fierce at school, and that way, nobody dares to pick on me.โ Yvonne made a face.
As I drove, I said, โIf youโre in the right, itโs fine to stand your ground. But if youโre not, you should talk things through first.โ
Yvonne nodded, then looked at me with big, sad eyes. โMommy, are you really going to Braylin? How long will you be gone? Are you not coming back?โ
โWorried I wonโt come back?โ I asked, smiling.
โOne of the kids in my class had her mom leave the country after her parents got divorced, and she never came back. Itโs so sad.โ Yvonneโs eyes started to tear up. โMommy, I donโt want to be a kid left behind.โ
I reached over and gently patted her head. โDonโt worry, sweetie. Iโll come back to see you whenever I can.โ
โOkay, then I can ask Daddy to take me to see you when he has time off.โ Yvonne was being so grown-up.
When we got back to the apartment, I tidied up a bit while Yvonne went to take a shower. By the time I finished mine, it was already after ten.
My phone dinged with a WeChat notification.
I glanced at the screenโit was a message in that three-person group chat.
Nathan sent over a photo. It was my apartment, lights blazing.
โVictoria, youโre back in Hachester?โ
I pressed my lips together, smiling. Nathan really did care about me.
I messaged him back, โYeah, just here for a couple of days. Are you still at work this late?โ
Nathan replied with a โlife is toughโ meme.
โMaking money matters, but so does your health. Try to get some rest.โ I knew that after we broke up, Nathan had really thrown himself into his work. Honestly, that was probably for the best.
Suddenly, Jared messaged, โIโm not dead yet, you know. Can you two not get all flirty while Iโm still here?โ
Nathan fired back right away, โMr. Holcomb, if you canโt stand it, why donโt you go drop dead for a while?โ
Jared dropped a sword emoji in the chat.
Nathan fired back with a bunch of bomb emojis.
Watching these two bicker in my group chat, I cut in, โIf you guys keep this up, Iโm leaving the group.โ
Nathan quickly sent over a gift. โGroup leaderโs loveโgrab it while itโs hot!โ
Jared was faster than meโhe snatched the gift and shot back, โThanks, admin. Youโre a saint.โ
Nathan sent an angry emoji. โSpit it out!โ
Jared instantly sent over a fat 9999 gift. โVictoria, hereโs some interest on top. Go ahead and take it.โ
I didnโt hold back; I grabbed it and replied, โThanks, Iโll use it to buy some snacks for your daughter.โ
Nathan chimed in, โWell, if thatโs the case, I should get some credit for those snacks too. Maybe Yvonne can call me godfather someday.โ
โIn your dreams,โ Jared shot back, clearly in a bad mood.
I quickly typed, โAdmin, silence him. Goodnight.โ
Nathan actually muted Jared, and the group chat fell silent.
I lay in bed, one arm completely claimed by Yvonne as she nestled quietly against me, already fast asleep.
The next morning, I helped Yvonne get ready and dropped her off at school.
She was getting more independent these days.
Seeing her heading in such a good direction, I couldnโt help but let out a quiet sigh.
If Jared really thought the Darwin family had something to do with how he died in his previous life, then trust meโheโd be out for payback against them real soon.
