Listen to this chapter:

โ€œSee me? By sneaking around like this? That doesnโ€™t really suit someone like you, Mr. Jennings,โ€ I shot back, coming at him harder than I meant to. Maybe it was all the fear and anxiety from earlier tonight, giving me a kind of courage born from desperation.

Edward stared at me, totally thrown off. After a long moment, he gave a helpless shrug. โ€œWhat else do you want me to do? Should I just call you and ask you out like itโ€™s all normal? Or maybe hang around outside your office waiting for you to get off work?โ€

โ€œNo way,โ€ I shot back, just the thought of it making my skin crawl. โ€œCan you please just be reasonable?โ€

Edwardโ€™s eyes, shadowed and dark, caught the glimmer of streetlight, making them look even more haunting and mesmerizing.

โ€œI know I should keep it together, butโ€ฆ I just canโ€™t help myself anymore, Victoria. Meeting you like thisโ€”itโ€™s humiliating,โ€ he admitted, sounding almost desperate. All that pride was gone; he looked so vulnerable, and you could see the pain written all over his face.

When you canโ€™t rein in your own feelings and desires, itโ€™s pure agony.

Itโ€™s not like a knife stabbing straight into youโ€”itโ€™s more like a swarm of tiny ants crawling all over your heart, biting and driving you crazy. The more you try to ignore it, the worse it gets.

โ€œIf you think itโ€™s humiliating, then stop creating these chances to run into me. Ryanโ€™s not cluelessโ€”tonight he thought you were there for Isabelle. If you keep popping up at the wrong moments, what do you think heโ€™ll start suspecting?โ€ I said, my fear now replaced by a calm, rational edge. If he couldnโ€™t see the problem, I had to make it clear to him.

Edward just stared at me for a moment, then gave a wry chuckle. โ€œYou know, youโ€™re starting to sound a bit like me when Iโ€™m trying to be logical.โ€

I shot him an annoyed glare. โ€œIโ€™m just trying to find a way to handle this. Even you think this is wrong, Mr. Jennings. Shouldnโ€™t you be making an effort to fix it?โ€

โ€œHow do you know I havenโ€™t tried? Iโ€™ve been holding myself back. Iโ€™m not asking for anything elseโ€”I just wanted to see you, even if itโ€™s like this,โ€ Edward said, his voice low and intense.

โ€œNo, you just want someone to call you out and snap you back to reality,โ€ I replied, my tone firm.

Edward didnโ€™t get mad; instead, he chuckled and nodded. โ€œHonestly, youโ€™re the only one whoโ€™d ever call me out to my face like this.โ€

โ€œWhat about your dad? Wouldnโ€™t he?โ€ I snapped back without missing a beat.

Edward paused, caught off guard, and for a split second, I saw a flash of nervousness in his usually dark, steady eyes. He gave a self-deprecating laugh. โ€œOh, he would. Heโ€™d tear into me way worse than you ever could. Iโ€™m actually scared of him. But with youโ€ฆ no matter how much you yell or get mad, I just donโ€™t feel afraid.โ€

โ€œSeriously, Edward, arenโ€™t you a grown man? Do you really still need someone else to knock some sense into you? Shouldnโ€™t adults be responsible for their own actions?โ€ I was so shocked and angry, I couldnโ€™t help but hit him where it hurt.

Edward suddenly closed his eyes, lowered his head in silence, then nodded. โ€œYouโ€™re right. But donโ€™t worry, Ryan wonโ€™t suspect a thing. Iโ€™ll just get some woman to pretend to be with meโ€”play the part so he doesnโ€™t catch on.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I blurted out, completely stunned. Thatโ€™s his idea of a solution? I thought, unable to believe it.

Edward tried to reassure me. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I wonโ€™t put you in an awkward position. But you canโ€™t stop me from wanting to see you.โ€

โ€œNo, I canโ€™t do this anymore. My heart canโ€™t handle this kind of shock,โ€ I blurted out, the fear almost overwhelming me.

โ€œThatโ€™s not your call, Victoria. I mean itโ€”I really do like you. Tonight, there were so many gorgeous women, all dolled up in their fancy dresses, but none of them could hold a candle to you in that business suit. Watching you lean on Ryan like thatโ€ฆ I was actually jealous,โ€ Edward admitted, pouring out more than heโ€™d ever said before.

I stood there, completely frozen, a cold numbness spreading through my whole body.

โ€œItโ€™s late. I need to go rest,โ€ I said angrily.

Edward nodded. โ€œOkay, go ahead.โ€

I turned to leave, but after a few steps, I stopped and looked back at him. โ€œCan we please just not see each other anymore? Seriously, okay?โ€

Edward suddenly stepped forward, reached out, and gently plucked a leaf from my hair. โ€œHonestly, even with your hair all messy, you still look pretty good.โ€

For a moment, I was completely speechless. Freaked out, I spun around and rushed toward the elevator. My mind went blank.

When I got home, I stood in front of the mirror, still a little out of breath. My hair was a mess from napping on Ryan on the way back, but somehow, there was a certain messy beauty to the reflection staring back at me.

I took off my pink pearl earrings and flopped onto the bed, feeling completely drained. How did things end up like this? I wondered, exhausted.

Why does life feel like one big knot I canโ€™t untangle? The more I thought about it, the more frustrated I felt.

Why does Edward have to be so stubborn about chasing after me? Canโ€™t he just like someone else for a change?

Iโ€™ve never even been nice to him. Every time I see him, I either hide or run away. Is he blind or something? Canโ€™t he tell I want nothing to do with him?

Just as my mind was spinning in chaos, my phone suddenly lit up with a few photos.

They were from Jaredโ€”pictures of me and Edward under the tree just moments ago.

I practically exploded off the bed, jolting upright in shock.
