As I was scrubbing dishes in the kitchen, Mariah stood right next to me, still grilling me. โSo, which one of those guys is actually your boyfriend? Donโt mess this up, okay? I know all three are great, but letโs be honestโyouโre not exactly in their league, not when it comes to ability or family background.โ
I let out a half-laugh, half-groan. โMom, arenโt I supposed to be the best daughter in the world to you? Why do you always have to roast me like this?โ
Mariah just crossed her arms, totally serious. โIโm just telling it like it is.โ
I shot her a look, protesting, โThereโs no scorecard for love, you know. Plenty of regular girls end up marrying presidents. So whatโs so impossible about my situation?โ
Mariah cracked up, giving me a playful smack on the back just like when I was a kid. โNice try, but donโt dodge the question. Spill it.โ
โMom, relationships are justโฆ you know, Iโm just going with the flow, taking it day by day. Who knows how things will turn out?โ I kept dodging her questions.
โWhat about Ryan? Heโs from Beijing, right? Already a star in the Foreign Ministry at such a young ageโhis family must be full of high achievers, and theyโve pinned all their hopes on him. Vic, donโt try to aim too high with him. Honestly, I think Nathanโs a better bet. His mom remarried and moved to Shariport, so if you end up with him, youโd be the lady of the house, no drama, no complications.โ Mariah started listing her son-in-law requirements again.
I let out a wry smile. โMom, I already broke up with him. He really is a good guy, butโฆ thereโs a lot of business complications mixed in. Itโs way messier than you think.โ
Mariah really couldnโt imagine how I got myself tangled up with these three guys, and honestly, I wasnโt about to lay it all out for herโsheโd totally freak.
โWell then, maybe you should think about Jared. Iโve always liked him. He even admitted at dinner that he messed up, and said heโs working on changingโฆโ Mariah suggested.
โMom, you actually buy that?โ I gave a quiet, snarky little scoff.
โWhen youโre dating, go for someone you like. But when it comes to marriage, find someone whoโs a good fit. Donโt overthink it or get stuck on the details,โ Mariah said, giving me her seasoned advice.
โNope, Iโm stubborn. I overthink everything and I donโt let things go,โ I shot back defiantly.
โYouโฆโ Mariah looked ready to explode, realizing she just couldnโt get through to me.
โMom, why donโt you go take care of Dad? Make sure he sleeps in the bedroom, not on the couch. Iโll handle the cleaning up,โ I said, eager to dodge any more of her questions as I ushered her out of the kitchen.
Tonight was honestly a mess. Nathan was busy talking to my dad about his job and family, Jared kept saying heโd change and put the kids first, and Ryan just quietly sat next to me, piling food onto my plate and telling me to eat up.
I still have no clue how this dinner lineup even came together, but I swear, next time Iโm putting a stop to it. I really donโt need Mariah thinking Iโm some kind of player.
The next morning, I was up before Mariah, whipping up a big breakfast spread.
After a good nightโs sleep, my dad was back to his usual self.
At the breakfast table, Mariah grumbled, โWhyโd you get up so early? You couldโve let Yvonne sleep in a bit longer. I couldโve made breakfast.โ
I just laughed. โMom, I invited you here to relax, not to cook.โ
Yvonne was sitting nearby, listening in, blinking her eyes as she took it all in.
Iโm not really teaching her anymoreโjust leading by example. Whatever she picks up, thatโs up to her.
Mariahโs face broke into a relieved smile. โYouโre such a good daughter. If you could just settle your big life decisions soon, your dad and I would finally be able to relax.โ
My dad looked at me seriously. โVic, honestly, I thought all three of those guys last night were great. But what about you?โ
My spoon nearly slipped from my hand as I blurted out, โDad, Ryanโs my boyfriend.โ
โYeah, that kidโs going places. Just look at himโheโs got the kind of face that wouldโve made him a prince or a lord back in the day,โ my dad boasted shamelessly.
Mariah gave him a playful shove. โCome on, donโt say that. Ryanโs just too young for Vic, heโs not the right match.โ
Yvonne rested her chin in her hand, gazing at me. โMom, when I grow up, will I be like you?โ
I turned to her. โLike me in what way?โ
Yvonne squinted her eyes with a cheeky grin. โIf Iโm as pretty as you, Iโll never have to worry about finding a boyfriend.โ
