Listen to this chapter:

As I was scrubbing dishes in the kitchen, Mariah stood right next to me, still grilling me. โ€œSo, which one of those guys is actually your boyfriend? Donโ€™t mess this up, okay? I know all three are great, but letโ€™s be honestโ€”youโ€™re not exactly in their league, not when it comes to ability or family background.โ€

I let out a half-laugh, half-groan. โ€œMom, arenโ€™t I supposed to be the best daughter in the world to you? Why do you always have to roast me like this?โ€

Mariah just crossed her arms, totally serious. โ€œIโ€™m just telling it like it is.โ€

I shot her a look, protesting, โ€œThereโ€™s no scorecard for love, you know. Plenty of regular girls end up marrying presidents. So whatโ€™s so impossible about my situation?โ€

Mariah cracked up, giving me a playful smack on the back just like when I was a kid. โ€œNice try, but donโ€™t dodge the question. Spill it.โ€

โ€œMom, relationships are justโ€ฆ you know, Iโ€™m just going with the flow, taking it day by day. Who knows how things will turn out?โ€ I kept dodging her questions.

โ€œWhat about Ryan? Heโ€™s from Beijing, right? Already a star in the Foreign Ministry at such a young ageโ€”his family must be full of high achievers, and theyโ€™ve pinned all their hopes on him. Vic, donโ€™t try to aim too high with him. Honestly, I think Nathanโ€™s a better bet. His mom remarried and moved to Shariport, so if you end up with him, youโ€™d be the lady of the house, no drama, no complications.โ€ Mariah started listing her son-in-law requirements again.

I let out a wry smile. โ€œMom, I already broke up with him. He really is a good guy, butโ€ฆ thereโ€™s a lot of business complications mixed in. Itโ€™s way messier than you think.โ€

Mariah really couldnโ€™t imagine how I got myself tangled up with these three guys, and honestly, I wasnโ€™t about to lay it all out for herโ€”sheโ€™d totally freak.

โ€œWell then, maybe you should think about Jared. Iโ€™ve always liked him. He even admitted at dinner that he messed up, and said heโ€™s working on changingโ€ฆโ€ Mariah suggested.

โ€œMom, you actually buy that?โ€ I gave a quiet, snarky little scoff.

โ€œWhen youโ€™re dating, go for someone you like. But when it comes to marriage, find someone whoโ€™s a good fit. Donโ€™t overthink it or get stuck on the details,โ€ Mariah said, giving me her seasoned advice.

โ€œNope, Iโ€™m stubborn. I overthink everything and I donโ€™t let things go,โ€ I shot back defiantly.

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Mariah looked ready to explode, realizing she just couldnโ€™t get through to me.

โ€œMom, why donโ€™t you go take care of Dad? Make sure he sleeps in the bedroom, not on the couch. Iโ€™ll handle the cleaning up,โ€ I said, eager to dodge any more of her questions as I ushered her out of the kitchen.

Tonight was honestly a mess. Nathan was busy talking to my dad about his job and family, Jared kept saying heโ€™d change and put the kids first, and Ryan just quietly sat next to me, piling food onto my plate and telling me to eat up.

I still have no clue how this dinner lineup even came together, but I swear, next time Iโ€™m putting a stop to it. I really donโ€™t need Mariah thinking Iโ€™m some kind of player.

The next morning, I was up before Mariah, whipping up a big breakfast spread.

After a good nightโ€™s sleep, my dad was back to his usual self.

At the breakfast table, Mariah grumbled, โ€œWhyโ€™d you get up so early? You couldโ€™ve let Yvonne sleep in a bit longer. I couldโ€™ve made breakfast.โ€

I just laughed. โ€œMom, I invited you here to relax, not to cook.โ€

Yvonne was sitting nearby, listening in, blinking her eyes as she took it all in.

Iโ€™m not really teaching her anymoreโ€”just leading by example. Whatever she picks up, thatโ€™s up to her.

Mariahโ€™s face broke into a relieved smile. โ€œYouโ€™re such a good daughter. If you could just settle your big life decisions soon, your dad and I would finally be able to relax.โ€

My dad looked at me seriously. โ€œVic, honestly, I thought all three of those guys last night were great. But what about you?โ€

My spoon nearly slipped from my hand as I blurted out, โ€œDad, Ryanโ€™s my boyfriend.โ€

โ€œYeah, that kidโ€™s going places. Just look at himโ€”heโ€™s got the kind of face that wouldโ€™ve made him a prince or a lord back in the day,โ€ my dad boasted shamelessly.

Mariah gave him a playful shove. โ€œCome on, donโ€™t say that. Ryanโ€™s just too young for Vic, heโ€™s not the right match.โ€

Yvonne rested her chin in her hand, gazing at me. โ€œMom, when I grow up, will I be like you?โ€

I turned to her. โ€œLike me in what way?โ€

Yvonne squinted her eyes with a cheeky grin. โ€œIf Iโ€™m as pretty as you, Iโ€™ll never have to worry about finding a boyfriend.โ€
