Chapter 566

Maybe it was all the sickness I went through in my previous life, but now I take every little ache and pain seriously. Even the smallest thing, I have to get it checked out as soon as possible.

I drove around the neighborhood a couple of times before I finally found a clinic. Turns out I was running a feverโ€”102.2ยฐF. No wonder my head felt like it was spinning.

The doctor said I could get an injection to recover faster, or just go home and take some meds.

I chose the meds. Iโ€™d always heard shots work fast, but theyโ€™re not exactly good for your body.

After picking up the meds, I headed home. While I waited for the water to boil, I grabbed my phone and deleted every single photo Isabelle had sent.

She only sent photosโ€”no voice messages, no texts, not even a word explaining why she sent them.

Looking at it now, it was obvious Isabelle never saw me as a friend. Now that Ryan and Fiona were together, I was just a stranger to her, someone she could hurt without caring at all.

Thatโ€™s just how people are. If thereโ€™s no benefit in it for them, who really cares about you?

The next day, I called in sick and skipped work. To my surprise, Jared rang me up first thing in the morning.

His voice was still mature and magnetic. โ€œWhyโ€™d you take the day off? Are you feeling under the weather?โ€

โ€œHow did you know?โ€ I asked, genuinely surprised.

โ€œMs. Wright from PR gave me a heads up. She said you didnโ€™t look so great yesterday,โ€ Jared said, worry clear in his tone.

โ€œItโ€™s just a cold. Some meds and Iโ€™ll be fine,โ€ I replied.

Jaredโ€™s voice dropped a notch. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just head home for the break? Iโ€™ll take Yvonne over. No need for you to make the trip to Hachester.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re divorced now. It wouldnโ€™t be appropriate for me to bring you home for the holidays. Iโ€™ll just make the trip to Hachester myself,โ€ I said seriously.

โ€œVictoria, your parents wouldnโ€™t mind me coming over for the holidays. Itโ€™s just you who has a problem with itโ€ฆโ€ Jared sounded a little frustrated at being turned down.

โ€œYes, I do mind,โ€ I replied honestly. Since you asked, Iโ€™ll be honest.

Jared was silent for a long time on the other end. Finally, he let out a resigned laugh. โ€œAlright, the hurt from my previous life and the punishment in this oneโ€”itโ€™s all what I deserve.โ€

โ€œJared, stop digging your own grave. While youโ€™re still young, go find someone and get married already,โ€ I said, half teasing, half serious.

Jared sounded a little annoyed. โ€œTell me, whatโ€™s so good about getting married?โ€

I burst out laughing. โ€œCome on, men are the real winners in marriage. Youโ€™ve had all the perks in your previous lifeโ€”free maid, free partner, and if your wifeโ€™s gentle enough, sheโ€™ll even give you emotional support. Youโ€™ve enjoyed all thatโ€ฆ Oh, and if you ever get bored, youโ€™ve got the cash to go chase some fun and excitement elsewhere.โ€

Jared went quiet in an instant.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to repeat my previous life,โ€ Jared said. โ€œI want to take a different path.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of path are you talking about?โ€ I asked, genuinely curious.

Jared was quiet for a moment, then said, โ€œJust take care of Yvonne. Iโ€™ll be here, waiting for you to come back.โ€

It felt like a bolt of lightning hit meโ€”my chest went all numb and tingly.

โ€œJared, cut it out with the fake sentimental stuff. I know thatโ€™s not who you are,โ€ I said, biting my lip, doing my best not to let any emotion slip through.

Jaredโ€™s tone turned lazy. โ€œThen letโ€™s bet on it. See if I can keep up the act."

โ€œIโ€™m not betting with you,โ€ I said, and hung up the phone.

After taking the meds, sleepiness hit me hard. This time, I actually crawled into bed, pulled the covers up, and let myself drift off.

God knows how long Iโ€™d been out, but in my groggy haze, I heard someone knocking at the door.

Thought I was just hearing things, but when I dragged myself awake, turns out someone really was knocking.

Checked my phoneโ€”it was already after 1pm.

I got up and walked over to the door, checked the security cam, and saw Jared standing outside.

I opened the door with a frownโ€”Jared was there, dressed in a black coat.

I stared at him in a daze, barely processing what was happening. The first thing Jared did was reach out and press his hand to my forehead. โ€œStill burning up, huh?โ€

โ€œWhy are you here?โ€ I croaked, still groggy. Iโ€™d just talked to him this morning, and now, after a nap, he was actually standing in front of me.

Jared frowned, worry etched on his face. โ€œWe need to get you to the hospital.โ€

โ€œI took some medicine this morningโ€ฆโ€ I tried to explain, but my voice came out all scratchy, and it hurt like hell to swallow. Clearly, the meds hadnโ€™t done a thing.

Without another word, Jared strode into my bedroom, grabbed my coat, and draped it over my shoulders. โ€œGo get your stuff together. Iโ€™m taking you to get checked out.โ€

My whole body felt sore and limp, but I managed to splash some water on my face, brush my teeth, and quickly tame my messy hair before tagging along with Jared to the hospital.

We went through the whole routineโ€”registration, seeing the doctor, getting jabbed with a needleโ€”and by the end of it, my head was still spinning and I felt even more out of it.

Jared sat beside me. When he saw me close my eyes, he reached over and guided my head to his shoulder.

I was too exhausted to put up a fuss. If he wanted to let me lean on him for a while, I didnโ€™t even bother to refuse.

With every breath, I could smell the disinfectant in the air, mixed with that cool, crisp scent that was unmistakably Jared.
