Listen to this chapter:

As soon as my dad finished speaking, Mariah gave him a hard whack. โ€œYou can eat whatever you want, but you canโ€™t just say anything.โ€

My dad instantly sobered up a bit, as if he suddenly remembered that the last time I introduced my boyfriend, his last name was Ryan. He immediately looked embarrassed.

When I glanced at Nathan, he lowered his eyes, hiding a smile. He hadnโ€™t been drinking, but his handsome face was flushed.

Yvonne was shoveling rice into her mouth, then scooted closer and asked, โ€œSally, what does โ€˜trying for a babyโ€˜ mean?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Eat up, have some more veggies,โ€ Mariah said quickly, loading her bowl with extra vegetables.

Yvonneโ€™s big dark eyes sparkled with curiosityโ€“I could tell her little brain was already in overdrive again.

Nathan cleared his throat and said, โ€œSir, Iโ€™ll toast you with coffee instead of wine.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s very thoughtful of you, Mr. Hallman,โ€ my dad said, clearly pleased.

After dinner, Mariah asked me to go out and pick up some things for the house, but I knew she just wanted to have a chat. I followed her out the front door and we headed over to the fountain plaza nearby. The place was crowded, with stalls everywhere selling every kind of kidsโ€˜ toy you could imagine.

Mariah stopped at the bridge leading to the plaza and turned to me, her expression serious. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? What happened to Ryan?โ€

โ€œWe broke up,โ€ I replied, since I knew I couldnโ€™t lie to her.

โ€œBroke up?โ€ Mariah frowned. โ€œIt hasnโ€™t been that long, has it?โ€

โ€œYeah, about two months,โ€ I said, doing a quick mental calculation.

โ€œVictoria, since your divorce, youโ€™ve already had two boyfriends, right?โ€ Mariah looked at me like she just couldnโ€™t figure me out. โ€œI still talk to Sally sometimes, and she told me Jared hasnโ€™t even tried to meet anyone new since the divorce. He hasnโ€™t dated at all.โ€

I replied calmly, โ€œHeโ€™s living his life, Iโ€™m living mine. Just because heโ€™s not seeing anyone doesnโ€™t mean I have to do the same.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I mean,โ€ Mariah said, shaking her head. โ€œI just want you to be careful. If youโ€™re going to date, find someone you can really build a future with, someone you could spend your life with.โ€ Mariah was still pretty old-fashionedโ€“she couldnโ€™t really get behind women playing the field when it comes to relationships.

โ€œMom, Iโ€™m trying, but itโ€™s not like I can just pick someone out of a lineup,โ€ I said, trying to dodge the question.

โ€œYou brought Mr. Hallman home. Does that mean youโ€™re serious about him?โ€ Mariah asked, smiling.

I shook my head. โ€œNo, weโ€™re just friends right now.โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™re just friends, you wouldnโ€™t bring him all the way home to meet your parents,โ€ Mariah said, her tone turning serious.

I laughed and tried to explain, โ€œI just wanted to show him around, itโ€™s not like I brought him here just to meet you.โ€

โ€œDid you see how many gifts he hauled into our living room? Thatโ€™s not just a casual visit,โ€ Mariah said, her expression darkening.

I had nothing to say to that. I really hadnโ€™t expected Nathan to bring so many gifts. When he said he wasnโ€™t driving himself and had the driver take us, I shouldโ€™ve realized he was up to somethingโ€“Nathan was secretly getting all those gifts ready.

โ€œMom, since he brought them, just take them,โ€ I said softly.

Mariah gave me a look like she couldnโ€™t do anything about it and shook her head. โ€œLoveโ€™s a double-edged sword, you know. Donโ€™t play around with your feelings. And be carefulโ€“donโ€™t get yourself into trouble, especially with your health. Women have to look out for themselves when it comes to these things.โ€

I blushed, feeling awkward. โ€œMom, I know, Iโ€™ll be careful.โ€

We strolled around the plaza a couple more times, and then Mariah suddenly said, โ€œVictoria, our school just got a big donation from a charity. Theyโ€™re going to expand two teaching buildings and even add a whole new set of playground facilities. The principal was so happy, she was grinning from ear to ear.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh too. โ€œSeriously? Thatโ€™s awesome! Those buildings were ancient back when I was a student. After all these years, I bet theyโ€™re practically falling apart.โ€

โ€œYeah, none of us expected our school would actually get chosen for a donation,โ€ Mariah chuckled, then let out a sigh. โ€œIโ€™m set to retire next year. I was hoping Iโ€™d get to teach the kids in those brand-new classrooms, but with the current progress, theyโ€™ll probably be ready just as Iโ€™m stepping down.โ€

I quickly tried to comfort her. โ€œMom, once you retire, you should really enjoy your life. Youโ€™ve worked so hard for so many yearsโ€“now itโ€™s finally your turn to relax and do what makes you happy.โ€

โ€œAfter I retire, Iโ€™m planning to tidy up the yard and start growing some veggies,โ€ Mariah said with a smile. โ€œAt least itโ€™ll give me something to do and keep me busy.โ€

We came back home carrying some shopping bags. My dad was sprawled out on the couch, totally drunk and fast asleep.

Nathan was hanging out on the couch, keeping Yvonne company while they watched Peppa Pig.
