Chapter 595
Jared had that unmistakable boss energy. He didnโt need to speak loudlyโeveryone could sense his determination to stand by me. The vibe in the room flipped in an instant, and people started coming over to toast me, tossing out lines like โyoung and talentedโ and โwe believe in you.โ
I handled all the small talk with ease, but inside, my emotions were all over the place. Jaredโs promise to make things right wasnโt just empty words.
While handing me real benefits, he was also guiding me to become stronger, one step at a time.
After dinner, everyone took the hint and left, leaving just Jared and me in the private room.
Only Jared and I remained in the private room.
Jared was a little drunk, his dark eyes clouded with an unreadable emotion.
โThanks. This oneโs for you,โ I said, lifting my glass of red wine.
But Jared took my glass and set it back on the table. โDo we really need to be so polite with each other?โ
I smiled. โIf you hadnโt stood up for me, I wouldnโt even have this chance. Of course, I have to thank you.โ
โVictoria, like I said, Iโm trying to make it up to the you from before. No matter what I do, itโs never enough,โ Jared suddenly buried his face in his arms on the table.
I froze for a moment.
Right then, it was like my soul was dragged back to that previous life, weighed down by all that old pain and sadness.
โIf thatโs the case, I should head out. Iโve still got a bunch of things to take care ofโฆโ I said, getting to my feet.
But just as I stood up, his hand shot out and caught my wrist. โVictoria, can you stay with me a little longer?โ he said.
I sat back downโmight as well ask him about his plans to go abroad while Iโm here.
โWhen did you make this decision? Going overseas isnโt exactly a small thingโwhy am I only hearing about it now?โ I asked.
If the companyโs sending me, thereโs no way I could say no.
Jared slowly lifted his head and leaned back in his chair. โI hadnโt gotten things settled with the school over there, so I didnโt mention it. Yesterday, I got word from themโthereโs a spot, and itโs just right for you to go.โ
โWait, soโฆ itโs really six months?โ I asked.
Jared chuckled. โRelax. If you ever want to fly home for a break, the company will pick up the tab for your flights.โ
โI didnโt mean it like that,โ I said. โItโs not like Iโm strapped for cashโI can buy my own tickets if I want.โ
โSo what else is bothering you? Is it Nathan youโre worried about? Or maybe Ryan?โ Jaredโs eyes grew darker, a trace of self-mockery in his voice. โGuess itโs not me, huh?โ
I looked out the window, keeping my tone even. โOther than Yvonne, Iโm not really worried about anything.โ
Jared nodded. โAlright, but you still havenโt told me about you and Ryan.โ
โThatโs my business. I donโt want to talk about it,โ I said, my heart racing.
Could Jared have figured something out?
โDidnโt you ask me to look into that charity? Turns out, I stumbled across a few other things too,โ Jared said, his gaze burning into me as I kept my eyes down. โWant to hear what I found?โ
โWhat is it?โ I forced myself to sound calm.
โRyan is getting engaged to an heiress from the Chen family,โ Jared said, enunciating each word.
I turned to face him, keeping my expression calm. โThatโs not news. I already knew.โ
Jared held my gaze, searching my face for a long moment, then let out a soft laugh. โAlright, if youโve moved on, I wonโt bring it up again.โ
Damn, Jaredโs at it again. That sly fox is always trying to get a read on me. Seriously, heโs the worst.
I gave a little laugh. โAre you just here to watch me crash and burn?โ
Jared shook his head. โIโm guessing you were just having some fun. I mean, how deep could a two-month fling really get?โ
I couldnโt even fake a smile after that. It was like he was saying Iโd only messed with Ryan to get back at him for cheating in our previous life.
โDonโt overthink it,โ I snapped, feeling a flash of anger.
Jared gave me a playful look. โVictoria, with the way you look, you really shouldnโt mess around with peopleโs hearts. Youโre a total heartbreakerโtrust me, thatโs dangerous.โ
I shot him a glare. โRyan and Nathan have seen way prettier women than me. Why would I even matter?โ
Jared nodded. โYeah, they might be into your looks, but itโs your strength and warmth that really draw them in. Compared to your previous life, youโre a lot more chill now.โ
โThatโs not really a plus. Women these days are pretty clear about what they want,โ I said. Honestly, I had no clue what Nathan and Ryan liked about me. Maybe itโs just that they canโt ever really pin me down.
โNo, women your age are usually all about locking down a guy and rushing into marriage. But youโre going the opposite way, and thatโs exactly why youโre so irresistible,โ Jared said with a laugh. โYou gotta understandโwhat you canโt have is always the most valuable.โ
I couldnโt help but be impressed by Jaredโs take on things. Guess living two lives really does give you some perspective.
