Chapter 595

Jared had that unmistakable boss energy. He didnโ€™t need to speak loudlyโ€“everyone could sense his determination to stand by me. The vibe in the room flipped in an instant, and people started coming over to toast me, tossing out lines like โ€œyoung and talentedโ€ and โ€œwe believe in you.โ€

I handled all the small talk with ease, but inside, my emotions were all over the place. Jaredโ€™s promise to make things right wasnโ€™t just empty words.

While handing me real benefits, he was also guiding me to become stronger, one step at a time.

After dinner, everyone took the hint and left, leaving just Jared and me in the private room.

Only Jared and I remained in the private room.

Jared was a little drunk, his dark eyes clouded with an unreadable emotion.

โ€œThanks. This oneโ€™s for you,โ€ I said, lifting my glass of red wine.

But Jared took my glass and set it back on the table. โ€œDo we really need to be so polite with each other?โ€

I smiled. โ€œIf you hadnโ€™t stood up for me, I wouldnโ€™t even have this chance. Of course, I have to thank you.โ€

โ€œVictoria, like I said, Iโ€™m trying to make it up to the you from before. No matter what I do, itโ€™s never enough,โ€ Jared suddenly buried his face in his arms on the table.

I froze for a moment.

Right then, it was like my soul was dragged back to that previous life, weighed down by all that old pain and sadness.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s the case, I should head out. Iโ€™ve still got a bunch of things to take care ofโ€ฆโ€ I said, getting to my feet.

But just as I stood up, his hand shot out and caught my wrist. โ€œVictoria, can you stay with me a little longer?โ€ he said.

I sat back downโ€“might as well ask him about his plans to go abroad while Iโ€™m here.

โ€œWhen did you make this decision? Going overseas isnโ€™t exactly a small thingโ€“why am I only hearing about it now?โ€ I asked.

If the companyโ€™s sending me, thereโ€™s no way I could say no.

Jared slowly lifted his head and leaned back in his chair. โ€œI hadnโ€™t gotten things settled with the school over there, so I didnโ€™t mention it. Yesterday, I got word from themโ€“thereโ€™s a spot, and itโ€™s just right for you to go.โ€

โ€œWait, soโ€ฆ itโ€™s really six months?โ€ I asked.

Jared chuckled. โ€œRelax. If you ever want to fly home for a break, the company will pick up the tab for your flights.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t mean it like that,โ€ I said. โ€œItโ€™s not like Iโ€™m strapped for cashโ€“I can buy my own tickets if I want.โ€

โ€œSo what else is bothering you? Is it Nathan youโ€™re worried about? Or maybe Ryan?โ€ Jaredโ€™s eyes grew darker, a trace of self-mockery in his voice. โ€œGuess itโ€™s not me, huh?โ€

I looked out the window, keeping my tone even. โ€œOther than Yvonne, Iโ€™m not really worried about anything.โ€

Jared nodded. โ€œAlright, but you still havenโ€™t told me about you and Ryan.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s my business. I donโ€™t want to talk about it,โ€ I said, my heart racing.

Could Jared have figured something out?

โ€œDidnโ€™t you ask me to look into that charity? Turns out, I stumbled across a few other things too,โ€ Jared said, his gaze burning into me as I kept my eyes down. โ€œWant to hear what I found?โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ I forced myself to sound calm.

โ€œRyan is getting engaged to an heiress from the Chen family,โ€ Jared said, enunciating each word.

I turned to face him, keeping my expression calm. โ€œThatโ€™s not news. I already knew.โ€

Jared held my gaze, searching my face for a long moment, then let out a soft laugh. โ€œAlright, if youโ€™ve moved on, I wonโ€™t bring it up again.โ€

Damn, Jaredโ€™s at it again. That sly fox is always trying to get a read on me. Seriously, heโ€™s the worst.

I gave a little laugh. โ€œAre you just here to watch me crash and burn?โ€

Jared shook his head. โ€œIโ€™m guessing you were just having some fun. I mean, how deep could a two-month fling really get?โ€

I couldnโ€™t even fake a smile after that. It was like he was saying Iโ€™d only messed with Ryan to get back at him for cheating in our previous life.

โ€˜Donโ€™t overthink it,โ€ I snapped, feeling a flash of anger.

Jared gave me a playful look. โ€œVictoria, with the way you look, you really shouldnโ€™t mess around with peopleโ€™s hearts. Youโ€™re a total heartbreakerโ€“trust me, thatโ€™s dangerous.โ€

I shot him a glare. โ€œRyan and Nathan have seen way prettier women than me. Why would I even matter?โ€

Jared nodded. โ€œYeah, they might be into your looks, but itโ€™s your strength and warmth that really draw them in. Compared to your previous life, youโ€™re a lot more chill now.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not really a plus. Women these days are pretty clear about what they want,โ€ I said. Honestly, I had no clue what Nathan and Ryan liked about me. Maybe itโ€™s just that they canโ€™t ever really pin me down.

โ€œNo, women your age are usually all about locking down a guy and rushing into marriage. But youโ€™re going the opposite way, and thatโ€™s exactly why youโ€™re so irresistible,โ€ Jared said with a laugh. โ€œYou gotta understandโ€”what you canโ€™t have is always the most valuable.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but be impressed by Jaredโ€™s take on things. Guess living two lives really does give you some perspective.
