Chapter 66

โ€œBro, have mercy.โ€ I refused and just shouted some random nonsense.

โ€œSay sweet things right now!โ€ Jared yelled. I bit my lip tightly and refused.

He seemed like he wanted to punish me, but after three tries, he looked drained. He gave up and held me tightly, like he wanted to melt me into himself.

Even though heโ€™d let go, he still looked upset. His chest felt tight, so he kissed me again, hard and frustrated.

I didnโ€™t fight back. I let him have his way until he finally released me, his eyes bloodshot. โ€œIf somethingโ€™s bothering you, just tell me now,โ€ Jared said, gripping my arm. His voice was full of anger.

At that moment, neither of us was dressed. There was no way we could have a real conversation. I quickly pulled the blanket over me. Jared grabbed his pajama top and buttoned it up while staring at me.

โ€œWhatโ€™s got you so upset? You look like you lost your soul. Are you that hurt?โ€ he asked.

Watching Jared lose it like that, I figured it was because I hadnโ€™t been paying enough attention. I hadnโ€™t been revolving around him like before. His pride and role as head of the family felt challenged.

โ€œHoney, what are you even talking about? I donโ€™t get it.โ€ The more he pressed for answers, the vaguer I got.

Jared hated that kind of response. He clenched his jaw and sneered, โ€œDonโ€™t tell me you think Iโ€™m cheatingโ€ฆ with Tracy? Just โ€˜cause I took her on the trip, youโ€™re jealous? Should I fire her? Would that make you happy?โ€

I froze. Jared was thinking about firing Tracy for me. But in his previous life, he said she was his trusted assistant, someone who fought alongside him.

I didnโ€™t think he would let her go. Besides, Tracy wasnโ€™t my enemy right now. I still needed her help to get a divorce.

โ€œHoney, I swear Iโ€™m not jealous of Tracy.โ€ I held up a finger. โ€œTracyโ€™s super capable. If you fire her, wonโ€™t the company lose a key player?โ€

โ€œThen why do you look like that?โ€ Jared was still mad.

I blinked innocently. โ€œLook like what?โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆ the way youโ€™re actingโ€ฆ itโ€™s like you donโ€™t love me anymore.โ€ Jared was so angry, he couldnโ€™t even get the words out right.

I paused a second, and then chuckled softly. โ€œHoney, weโ€™ve been married for years. Thereโ€™s no passion left. Iโ€™ve always seen you as family. Besides, didnโ€™t you say thereโ€™s no spark after all these years? I just want to live peacefully now.โ€

I threw his own words back at him. His face turned red with frustration. Jared stormed out of the bedroom, mad as hell. I lay back on the bed. My mood, which had been pretty good, just got even better.

I didnโ€™t care what Jared was mad about or what was bothering him. I only cared about my peace. The next morning, I helped Yvonne get dressed. She was still sleepy, eyes shut tight as I put on her clothes.

When she was ready, she stretched out her arms. โ€œMommy, carry me downstairs.โ€

I carried her down and set her in her chair. I placed breakfast in front of her. โ€œEat up.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s Daddy?โ€ Yvonne looked toward the stairs. โ€œDaddy usually wakes up early and goes jogging. Why hasnโ€™t he come down today?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry about him. Just eat. After that, Iโ€™ll take you to school,โ€ I said softly. But Yvonne jumped out of her chair and ran upstairs.

Watching her go, I felt mixed emotions. The last time I was sick with a cold, Yvonne didnโ€™t even ask how I was. But now, just because Jared skipped breakfast, she was worried.

A few minutes later, Yvonne came back down and sat at the table. She started eating and said, โ€œDaddy said he didnโ€™t sleep well last night, so heโ€™s resting some more.โ€

โ€œMm, let him sleep,โ€ I said, already knowing why.

Yvonne frowned and added, โ€œDaddy must be tired from his trip. Mommy, Iโ€™ve been thinking. You should go back to work. Daddyโ€™s probably too tired earning money all by himself.โ€

I was stunned. Yvonne was making this decision not because she respected me, but because she felt sorry for her dad working so hard alone.

โ€œAnd also, Mommy, stop buying so many clothes and handbags. Your closet is full. You need to learn to save money,โ€ Yvonne said, sounding way more grown-up than her age.
