Chapter 69
Nathanโs words snapped me out of my thoughts. I stared at him blankly. His eyes were sincere and deep. When he looked at me, I felt like I could mess with him and get away with it.
I pushed those naughty thoughts away fast and straightened my face. โMr. Hallman, Iโm not going to cheat just because he was playing the rooster.โ
Nathan burst out laughing. โIs that supposed to be funny?โ Today, Jared took Tracy, who had morning sickness, to the hospital for a checkup.
I wasnโt in the mood to laugh. Nathan stopped laughing and softly said, โThatโs a good way to think. Donโt punish yourself for other peopleโs mistakes. Just be yourself. Good things and good people will always get noticed.โ
His words healed a lot of my sadness right away. โYouโre not trying to hit on me, are you?โ I blurted out without thinking, caught up in my emotions.
Nathan looked shocked, and then his face flushed red. A pure guy really canโt resist teasing. โUh, I mean, I can be your friend, but I wonโt cross any lines,โ I said honestly.
I wanted to be friends with Nathan. Having a powerful friend who could help me get ahead sounded great. Nathan looked hurt by what I said.
He said with a deep look, โI never meant to cross the line. At first, I just wanted to get to know you.โ
I smiled and said, โArenโt we already friends now?โ
โYeah. If you want to be friends, that makes me happy.โ Nathanโs gaze was warm, but I knew he had other feelings too.
Nathan changed the subject. Halfway through the meal, I suddenly remembered something more urgent. I quickly looked at Nathan. โCan you do me a favor right now?โ
Seeing my serious face, Nathan nodded right away. โSure. What is it?โ
โCan you send someone to the affiliate hospitalโs OBโGYN department to take some photos for me?โ I said, feeling anxious.
โOkay. Whose photos?โ Nathan asked.
โJared took the companyโs VP, Tracy, to the OBโGYN department,โ I said flatly.
Nathan was shocked. โI donโt know if itโs too late now, but I have to do this to collect evidence for the divorce.โ I looked down and hid the sadness in my eyes.
Nathan stared at me for a long moment, then quietly got up from his seat and stepped outside to make a phone call.
After a short while, he came back and said, โI sent my most trusted person over there. If they canโt get any photos, Iโll use my connections to find out whatโs going on.โ
I looked at him gratefully and said, โThank you.โ
In my previous life, I was isolated by everyone. I wasnโt from Hachester and wasnโt good at making connections. If Yvonne hadnโt cried and let some information slip, I wouldnโt have known how close Tracy and Jared were.
Therefore, Nathanโs help felt like a lifeline. He looked at me with a bit of pity. I lowered my head and sipped my coffee, worried he might ask for more details.
Luckily, he didnโt press me and just comforted me, saying he would tell me as soon as he heard anything. We left the restaurant around 2:30. My car was in front, and his car followed closely behind.
I had always been confident in my driving, but after about ten minutes, I bumped the car in front of me on a curve.
The driver cursed loudly and jumped out, glaring at the dented tail light I caused. I was shocked and hit my forehead on the steering wheel. Ignoring the pain, I quickly got out and apologized.
Maybe because I looked pretty, the driver stared at me for two seconds. Though angry, his attitude softened a lot. โYoung lady, you must be new at this. Look what you did to my tail light. I was rushing to pick up my kid.โ
My mind was a little foggy, and I said instinctively, โIโm sorry. It wasnโt on purpose. Itโs my fault.โ
Just then, a gentle male voice spoke behind me. โMs. Murphy, are you okay?โ
I turned and saw Nathan still behind me. I was surprised since his company was in the opposite direction. The driver immediately asked, โAre you her husband?โ
โIโm her friend,โ Nathan said.
โShe just said it was all her fault. You donโt have a problem with that, right?โ The driver pushed aggressively.
