Chapter 7
Melissa was way more panicked than I was. She gripped my hand, terrified Iโd make a scene. After all, Jared was a big-shot executive. She probably figured if we caused a public embarrassment, Iโd end up regretting it.
โVictoria, Iโm so sorry. IโI had no clueโฆโ Melissa stammered, worried I might do something crazy.
I patted her hand gently and whispered, โItโs fine. Whereโs our table? Letโs go sit.โ
Melissaโs eyes went wide in disbeliefโmy calm mustโve thrown her off. โVictoriaโฆโ she started, then trailed off.
I gave a cool smile. โI know that woman. Sheโs Jaredโs assistant, Tracy. No big deal.โ
Melissa peeked over quickly, let out a breath, and led me to our table.
Maybe my dressโpart innocent, part sexyโwas too eye-catching, but Jared spotted me right away. And plenty of guys around us couldnโt help but look up at me, too.
โMom!โ Yvonne suddenly stood up and called out.
I turned and waved, but she didnโt budge. Instead, she glanced right at Tracy beside her.
Tracy looked over at me. Then she reached out, brushing Yvonneโs hair gently, and whispered something in her ear. But Yvonne just hung back, not moving.
Jared stood up, took Yvonneโs small hand, and walked her over. โWhat are you doing here?โ he asked, his eyes sweeping over me.
Melissa perked up, smiling brightly. โMr. Holcomb, I invited Victoria to dinner.โ
Jared nodded politely at her and then nudged Yvonne. โSay hello.โ
Yvonne mumbled reluctantly, โHi, Melissa.โ
Melissa gushed right away. โYvonne, youโre getting so pretty, and youโve grown so much taller.โ
Jared looked at me, then at Tracy, and finally at Yvonne. โWant to go with your mom?โ he asked.
โNo.โ Yvonne shook her head firmly. โIโm done eating. Tracy said sheโll take me to the arcade later. I wanna go.โ
โAlright.โ Jared nodded and turned to me. โWeโre heading out.โ
I gave a small smile, calm as could be. โOkay.โ
Jared stared at me, confused. Clearly, he hadnโt expected thisโno scene, no anger, not even a question about the short-haired woman or what she meant to him.
He took Yvonne back to their table, grabbed their stuff, and hurried off.
Melissa watched them disappear through the door, then turned to me, her face full of sympathy. โIโm so sorry, Victoria. I shouldnโt have picked this restaurantโI never shouldโve let you see something thatโd hurt you.โ
โIโm not hurt,โ I said, my voice steady. โMelissa, I donโt care about Jared anymore.โ
โWhat?โ Melissaโs jaw dropped.
I sipped my coffee, letting out a bitter laugh. โIf a guyโs that clueless, trying to control him is just a total waste of time. Now that he wants to fool around out there, let him.โ
โAre you really okay?โ Melissa asked, her voice filled with concern.
โNope. Iโm just finally seeing things. All these years, Iโve been focused on Jared and Yvonne. It was exhausting, and I never even got a thank-you,โ I said calmly.
Melissaโs eyes instantly welled up, and she felt even more sorry for me, as if I was forcing myself to hold back my hurt, putting on a brave front.
I picked up my wine glass and held it out to her. โDonโt look at me like that. Letโs celebrate. New chapter, remember? Wish me a good futureโyoung, pretty, healthy, and free.โ
