Chapter 7

Melissa was way more panicked than I was. She gripped my hand, terrified Iโ€™d make a scene. After all, Jared was a big-shot executive. She probably figured if we caused a public embarrassment, Iโ€™d end up regretting it.

โ€œVictoria, Iโ€™m so sorry. Iโ€”I had no clueโ€ฆโ€ Melissa stammered, worried I might do something crazy.

I patted her hand gently and whispered, โ€œItโ€™s fine. Whereโ€™s our table? Letโ€™s go sit.โ€

Melissaโ€™s eyes went wide in disbeliefโ€”my calm mustโ€™ve thrown her off. โ€œVictoriaโ€ฆโ€ she started, then trailed off.

I gave a cool smile. โ€œI know that woman. Sheโ€™s Jaredโ€™s assistant, Tracy. No big deal.โ€

Melissa peeked over quickly, let out a breath, and led me to our table.

Maybe my dressโ€”part innocent, part sexyโ€”was too eye-catching, but Jared spotted me right away. And plenty of guys around us couldnโ€™t help but look up at me, too.

โ€œMom!โ€ Yvonne suddenly stood up and called out.

I turned and waved, but she didnโ€™t budge. Instead, she glanced right at Tracy beside her.

Tracy looked over at me. Then she reached out, brushing Yvonneโ€™s hair gently, and whispered something in her ear. But Yvonne just hung back, not moving.

Jared stood up, took Yvonneโ€™s small hand, and walked her over. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ he asked, his eyes sweeping over me.

Melissa perked up, smiling brightly. โ€œMr. Holcomb, I invited Victoria to dinner.โ€

Jared nodded politely at her and then nudged Yvonne. โ€œSay hello.โ€

Yvonne mumbled reluctantly, โ€œHi, Melissa.โ€

Melissa gushed right away. โ€œYvonne, youโ€™re getting so pretty, and youโ€™ve grown so much taller.โ€

Jared looked at me, then at Tracy, and finally at Yvonne. โ€œWant to go with your mom?โ€ he asked.

โ€œNo.โ€ Yvonne shook her head firmly. โ€œIโ€™m done eating. Tracy said sheโ€™ll take me to the arcade later. I wanna go.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€ Jared nodded and turned to me. โ€œWeโ€™re heading out.โ€

I gave a small smile, calm as could be. โ€œOkay.โ€

Jared stared at me, confused. Clearly, he hadnโ€™t expected thisโ€”no scene, no anger, not even a question about the short-haired woman or what she meant to him.

He took Yvonne back to their table, grabbed their stuff, and hurried off.

Melissa watched them disappear through the door, then turned to me, her face full of sympathy. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry, Victoria. I shouldnโ€™t have picked this restaurantโ€”I never shouldโ€™ve let you see something thatโ€™d hurt you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not hurt,โ€ I said, my voice steady. โ€œMelissa, I donโ€™t care about Jared anymore.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Melissaโ€™s jaw dropped.

I sipped my coffee, letting out a bitter laugh. โ€œIf a guyโ€™s that clueless, trying to control him is just a total waste of time. Now that he wants to fool around out there, let him.โ€

โ€œAre you really okay?โ€ Melissa asked, her voice filled with concern.

โ€œNope. Iโ€™m just finally seeing things. All these years, Iโ€™ve been focused on Jared and Yvonne. It was exhausting, and I never even got a thank-you,โ€ I said calmly.

Melissaโ€™s eyes instantly welled up, and she felt even more sorry for me, as if I was forcing myself to hold back my hurt, putting on a brave front.

I picked up my wine glass and held it out to her. โ€œDonโ€™t look at me like that. Letโ€™s celebrate. New chapter, remember? Wish me a good futureโ€”young, pretty, healthy, and free.โ€
