Chapter 76
Today was Tracyโs birthday. I figured theyโd stay out late. When I got home, Jaredโs car was parked at the garden gate. He was back.
It was only about 9:30 PM. Maybe Jared had the driver bring Yvonne home. He still needed to spend some romantic time with Tracy tonight.
โDad, are you feeling better? Want some more hot water?โ I heard Yvonneโs voice as I reached the living room door.
When I walked in, Jared and Yvonne were sitting on the couch, looking at me. โMom, where have you been? Youโre back so late. Dad drank a lot and got drunk.โ
Yvonne was a kid. She didnโt understand that Jared got drunk on his own, not because others pushed him to. He was happy inside, so he drank more.
โIs that so? Then donโt bother him. Let him sleep.โ I changed my shoes and went upstairs.
โMom, arenโt you going to check on Dad?โ Yvonne shouted from the stairs.
โIโm tired. Iโll take a shower first.โ I wasnโt in the mood. If he got drunk because of his lover, Tracy would be the one to care for him. I, the wife, knew my limits.
After my shower, I helped Yvonne take a bath upstairs. She told me about the birthday party, but she was smart enough not to mention anything about Tracy and Jared.
โMom, Iโm tired. You go take care of Dad.โ Yvonne had a regular sleep schedule. After 10 PM, she usually fell asleep. She climbed into bed on her own.
I didnโt go downstairs. I went to the bedroom. I still had some payroll stuff I hadnโt figured out. I needed to look up some info on the computer.
As I sat there, the door suddenly opened. Jared stood in the doorway, his face flushed, watching me. โVictoria, are you still mad?โ Jaredโs voice sounded angry.
I calmly looked at him. โIโm working. I donโt have time to be mad.โ
โI just gave Tracy a birthday party. Do you have to be so petty? Sheโs the companyโs vice president. She needs my approval as her boss.โ
โThen go ahead. Youโve got long legs. Iโm not holding you back.โ I cut him off. My face turned cold.
Jaredโs eyes widened. He stepped over and snatched the files from my hands. The first thing he did was tear them into pieces and toss them into the air. The papers fell like snow all over me.
โVictoria, I married you so youโd take care of this family, not so you could cause trouble and act like a jealous woman.โ Jared was probably drunk. His temper was worse than usual. His face went pale, and his eyes burned with anger.
I gave a faint, cold laugh. โJared, how about we sign another agreement?โ
Jared froze and stared at me. I stood up and put my fingers on the table. My eyes were calm but firm as I looked at him. โFrom now on, we donโt interfere with each other.
โIโll let you mess around outside, and you wonโt stop me from making male friends. Weโll live peacefully, each doing our own thing. I wonโt ask you to come home early, and you donโt need to ask where I go.โ
โVictoria, are you crazy?โ Jared looked shocked and ashamed. โHave you thought about how much youโve done for this family? And how much I have?
โEvery year, I invest a lot in this family and you. The clothes, jewelry, and bags in your closet? I bought every one of them. And now you want fairness from me? Huh?โ
