Chapter 767

Edward pulled me into a tight embrace, my forehead resting against his firm chest. A sense of calm washed over me.

โ€œI didnโ€™t leave,โ€ I murmured softly. โ€œI just went downstairs to grab a coffee.โ€

Edward released me, his fingers gently cupping my face. โ€œReally?โ€

His deep-set eyes searched mine, as if he couldnโ€™t quite believe Iโ€™d only been gone for a moment.

I chuckled. โ€œYouโ€™re so worried. Are you afraid Iโ€™ll leave?โ€

Edwardโ€™s expression faltered, then he pulled me into his arms again. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t expect you and Nora to meet like this. I shouldโ€™ve talked things through with her before letting you two meet.โ€

โ€œIt all happened so fast,โ€ I said quietly. โ€œHow did your talk go? Is she still mad?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s still stuck on the fact that you used to date Ryan,โ€ Edward said with a wry, self-mocking smile. โ€œShe even called me a thief for stealing her brotherโ€™s girlfriend.โ€

I paused for a moment, then looked down and smiled. โ€œEdward, maybe sheโ€™s not wrong.โ€

Edward stiffened for a second, then gave my cheek a playful pinch. โ€œI donโ€™t know about anything else, but when it comes to feelings, just sitting around and hoping someone notices you? Thatโ€™s just being a fool.โ€

I met Edwardโ€™s burning, deep eyes. He really did a lot behind the scenes just to be near me.

Maybe this isnโ€™t exactly love, but if you donโ€™t do anything at all, then itโ€™s definitely not love.

โ€œEdward, what should we do now?โ€ I asked, feeling a bit lost.

โ€œIโ€™ll talk to Nora and try to get her to accept us,โ€ Edward said quietly.

I knew he was caught in the middle, torn between love and family. If he couldnโ€™t make a clean break, things would just get more complicated.

โ€œIf itโ€™s really that tough, maybe we should reconsider,โ€ I said, not wanting to cause any troubleโ€“especially not for him.

โ€œVictoria, donโ€™t be so negative right now,โ€ Edward said, tightening his grip on my fingers. โ€œCome on, I want you to head back to my place first. Iโ€™ll stay here with Nora tonight.โ€

I didnโ€™t say anything else.

Edwardโ€™s driver took me to a villa, his place in the States.

The housekeeper greeted me with a warm smile.

I ate a little, took a shower, and lay down in the clean guest room, but sleep just wouldnโ€™t come.

I forced myself to fall into a hazy sleep.

But all that came were endless nightmares.

One bizarre dream after another, each more surreal than the last.

โ€˜I dreamed I was standing in a sea of flowers, but a giant wave crashed over meโ€“beauty gone in a heartbeat, everything ruined,โ€™ I thought.

โ€œThen I was walking a tightrope over a bottomless abyss, two snakes chasing me, terror rising in my chest until I wanted to scream,โ€™ I told myself.

I had no idea how much time had passed when a gentle warmth brushed my face, pulling me out of my nightmare.

I opened my eyes to find daylight spilling through the window. Edward was sitting at the edge of the bed, his gaze lowered, watching me quietly.

I looked at him in a daze, half-convinced I was still dreaming.

Edward reached over and touched the pillow beneath my head. โ€œYour pillowโ€™s wet. Did you cry?โ€

Hearing his voice grounded me in reality. I pushed myself up. โ€œNo, I think I just had a nightmare and woke up in a cold sweat.โ€

Edward glanced around the room. โ€œCome sleep in my room tonight. Donโ€™t stay in the guest room.โ€

I took his large hand in mine. โ€œEdward, is Nora feeling any better?โ€

He nodded. โ€œThe doctor said she can go home today. Nothing to worry about.โ€

โ€œIs she still not okay with us?โ€ I asked softly.
