My retort made Jared choke momentarily, his handsome face growing darker.
โThis is between us as husband and wife. Donโt drag someone else into it,โ Jared said in a lowered tone, but his emotions clearly worsened.
I nodded. It was true; when a guy cheated, the other woman was at fault too, but he was even more responsible.
โAlright, letโs not talk about Tracy. Letโs focus on you. If thereโs nothing between you two, why are you so nervous?โ I asked sharply.
Jaredโs eyes froze for a second, and then he seemed displeased. โWhen did I ever act nervous? Iโm just having a normal conversation with you. Stop twisting things.โ
Listening to that, it was obvious he wasnโt genuinely trying to explain anything. He was just using a tough attitude to cover up something deeper. I instantly lost interest in arguing further; I needed to look after my own health and sanity.
โFine, I got it. I wonโt bring up Tracy around our daughter again.โ With that, I headed to the bathroom. I thought, โIf he wants to win this argument so badly, let him.โ
By the time I came out of the bathroom, Jared was gone.
In the middle of the night, Yvonne crawled into my arms, holding my arm tightly with her little hands. โMommy, I had a nightmare. Hold me while I sleep,โ she said.
Looking at the little body in my arms made my heart ache. I thought, โIโve decided to stop trying to control her. If Jared and I divorce, Iโll probably see her only every few days, or sometimes not for months.
โIf I really move to another city for work, Iโll miss her teenage years and her rebellious phase. I wonโt be there for her middle school tutoring sessions or see her come home late from high school.
โWhen she goes abroad for college, itโll be Jared and Tracy who support her, while I might only call from afar to check in on her.โ
Tears unknowingly filled my eyes. I felt so lost inside. โHow does one live life without regrets?โ I wondered.
The next morning, Yvonne went to look for Jared, only to find that he wasnโt in his room.
After I got dressed and went downstairs, Wendy told me that Jared had left last night. I thought he was probably in a bad mood and went to find his lover for some comfort.
At the breakfast table, Yvonne was eating while eyeing me. โMom, your clothes have been looking so good lately. Can I wear them when I grow up?โ
I shook my head. โNo, by the time you grow up, these clothes will be old.โ
Yvonne giggled and said, โMy teacher said youโre really beautiful and that Iโll grow up to be a beautiful woman too.โ
โIs that so? Well, eat more then,โ I said, scooping another spoonful of gruel for her.
Today, I wore a white blouse with a big bow at the neckline, paired with a high-waisted fishtail skirt. Thanks to my height, the look was both elegant and striking.
I thought, โFrom now on, Iโll make an effort to dress well every day as a way to compensate myself.โ
On the way to school, Yvonne asked where we would go during summer vacation and mentioned many places she wanted to revisit from last year. She remembered them vividly and wanted to experience them all over again.
I told her there were no plans for this summer. If she wanted to go somewhere, she should ask Jared to take her because I had to focus on work. She looked disappointed and refused to talk to me.
When we arrived at the school gate, the teacher asked her to say goodbye to me, but she just huffed and ran into the school.
