Chapter 814
My mom, still holding the plate, leaned against the bathroom door and said, โDonโt blame me for nagging, but a womanโs youth only lasts for so long. You got married young and had a wonderful daughter like Yvonne, but you canโt just go through life with only one child. Yvonneโs living with Jaredโs family now, so you should really think about having a child who stays with you and is truly your own.โ
I glanced back at her.
She quickly added, โYouโre earning good money now and so focused on your careerโI know you donโt want to go back to your old life or spend your days chasing after some guy. Your dad and I talked it through, and if you donโt want to get married, thatโs perfectly fine. But you should really consider having a childโboy or girl doesnโt matterโsomeone whoโs yours, and you raise yourself.โ
I couldnโt help but smile. โAre my parents really this worried about me now?โ
After brushing my teeth, I tossed a cherry into my mouth and said, โMom, I honestly donโt have time to think about having a kid right now. If you and Dad are set on having a grandchild, looks like Aiden will beat me to it. Once he and his girlfriend get back from their trip, theyโll probably start talking marriage.โ
โAiden will sort himself out, thatโs not what Iโm worried about. Itโs you Iโm concerned for. Just because one marriage didnโt work out, doesnโt mean you should go through life alone,โ my mom said, her voice almost frantic. Sheโd even quietly asked my assistant about me and found out there hasnโt been a guy around me for over a year and a half. Sometimes I wonder if sheโs more anxious than I am.
โMom, with you and Dad here, how could I ever call myself lonely?โ I grinned, dodging her worries like a pro.
โYour father and I are pushing sixty, you know. We canโt be here foreverโฆโ
โOh, Mom, donโt talk like that. You and Dad are going to stick around for agesโlive to a hundred, at least,โ I said, feeling a sudden ache in my chest. In my previous life, Mom left us at sixty-three, and Dad barely made it through a year after she was gone. Whenever the topic came up, I couldnโt help but get nervous.
โAlright, alright, Iโll drop it. But you really need to get serious about your personal situation,โ my mom said, finally letting it go as she walked out.
My game plan? Just rack up enough cash before I turned thirty-five, then maybe Iโd consider the whole having-a-kid thing. For now, though, that was not even on my radar.
As I went downstairs for breakfast, I noticed my dad was watching TV, and suddenly a news report popped up on the screen.
It hit me like a ton of bricksโJeffrey, Ryanโs grandfather, had passed away just last night.
When his black-and-white photo appeared, I found myself frozen at the doorway.
Was it really this sudden?
It was already June, and the summer heat was creeping in. Out of nowhere, thick clouds started gathering outsideโit looked like a storm was brewing.
Now that his grandfather had passed away, I couldnโt help but wonder, could the Jennings family really stay on top like they used to, or is everything about to change?
Suddenly, I thought of Edward. His feelings for the old man never seemed as fervent as Ryanโs. Was Edward going to use this chance to make a move? And what was going to happen to Ryanโwhat was going to happen to him now? I couldnโt help but worry.
