Chapter 814

My mom, still holding the plate, leaned against the bathroom door and said, โ€œDonโ€™t blame me for nagging, but a womanโ€™s youth only lasts for so long. You got married young and had a wonderful daughter like Yvonne, but you canโ€™t just go through life with only one child. Yvonneโ€™s living with Jaredโ€™s family now, so you should really think about having a child who stays with you and is truly your own.โ€

I glanced back at her.

She quickly added, โ€œYouโ€™re earning good money now and so focused on your careerโ€“I know you donโ€™t want to go back to your old life or spend your days chasing after some guy. Your dad and I talked it through, and if you donโ€™t want to get married, thatโ€™s perfectly fine. But you should really consider having a childโ€“boy or girl doesnโ€™t matterโ€“someone whoโ€™s yours, and you raise yourself.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€˜Are my parents really this worried about me now?โ€™

After brushing my teeth, I tossed a cherry into my mouth and said, โ€œMom, I honestly donโ€™t have time to think about having a kid right now. If you and Dad are set on having a grandchild, looks like Aiden will beat me to it. Once he and his girlfriend get back from their trip, theyโ€™ll probably start talking marriage.โ€

โ€œAiden will sort himself out, thatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m worried about. Itโ€™s you Iโ€™m concerned for. Just because one marriage didnโ€™t work out, doesnโ€™t mean you should go through life alone,โ€ my mom said, her voice almost frantic. Sheโ€™d even quietly asked my assistant about me and found out there hasnโ€™t been a guy around me for over a year and a half. Sometimes I wonder if sheโ€™s more anxious than I am.

โ€œMom, with you and Dad here, how could I ever call myself lonely?โ€ I grinned, dodging her worries like a pro.

โ€œYour father and I are pushing sixty, you know. We canโ€™t be here foreverโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOh, Mom, donโ€™t talk like that. You and Dad are going to stick around for agesโ€“live to a hundred, at least,โ€ I said, feeling a sudden ache in my chest. In my previous life, Mom left us at sixty-three, and Dad barely made it through a year after she was gone. Whenever the topic came up, I couldnโ€™t help but get nervous.

โ€œAlright, alright, Iโ€™ll drop it. But you really need to get serious about your personal situation,โ€ my mom said, finally letting it go as she walked out.

My game plan? Just rack up enough cash before I turned thirty-five, then maybe Iโ€™d consider the whole having-a-kid thing. For now, though, that was not even on my radar.

As I went downstairs for breakfast, I noticed my dad was watching TV, and suddenly a news report popped up on the screen.

It hit me like a ton of bricksโ€“Jeffrey, Ryanโ€™s grandfather, had passed away just last night.

When his black-and-white photo appeared, I found myself frozen at the doorway.

Was it really this sudden?

It was already June, and the summer heat was creeping in. Out of nowhere, thick clouds started gathering outsideโ€“it looked like a storm was brewing.

Now that his grandfather had passed away, I couldnโ€™t help but wonder, could the Jennings family really stay on top like they used to, or is everything about to change?

Suddenly, I thought of Edward. His feelings for the old man never seemed as fervent as Ryanโ€™s. Was Edward going to use this chance to make a move? And what was going to happen to Ryanโ€“what was going to happen to him now? I couldnโ€™t help but worry.
