Chapter 825

Jaredโ€™s last words cracked me up. I couldnโ€™t help but let my mind wander for a moment.

If a woman got to choose, most of the time sheโ€™d go for someone a bit younger.

But that was not a dealbreaker for me. It was just that, on this speeding train called life, when I glance back, Ryan wasnโ€™t far behindโ€“and he was the one willing to stick with me and watch the scenery roll by.

I shot back at Jared with a grin, โ€œHey, the younger ones are great for emotional support. What's wrong with me being a bit shallow for once?โ€

As soon as I replied, he called me right away.

I thought for a couple seconds, then picked up.

โ€œVictoria, with you and Edwardโ€ฆ you sure he doesnโ€™t care? Arenโ€™t you afraid heโ€™s only back for revenge, that once heโ€™s had enough heโ€™ll just kick you to the curb?โ€ Jaredโ€™s words were a tangled mess of jealousy and concern.

His words felt like a needle stabbing straight into my heart.

โ€œEnough, donโ€™t try to come between me and him. Weโ€™re just getting started hereโ€”I canโ€™t handle you stirring things up already,โ€ I said, frustrated.

โ€œCanโ€™t you just move on? Apparently, youโ€™ve had suitors lining up these past two years. Donโ€™t tell me none of them can measure up to Ryan,โ€ Jared sneered.

He wasnโ€™t wrong. In these past couple of years, Iโ€™d had plenty of admirers orbiting around meโ€“some tried to play it cool and test the waters, others just laid their feelings bare. I was always out of reach, and they weighed every move, careful not to overstep. The moment they sensed my coldness, theyโ€™d bow out with dignity.

I wasnโ€™t some ornamental vase sitting pretty on a pedestal anymore, just waiting to be chosen.

The tables had turnedโ€“they were the ones waiting, hoping Iโ€™d pick them instead.

โ€œJared, I spent my whole previous life devoted to youโ€”till the very end. Maybe thatโ€™s why I started to rebel when it came to love, wanting attention from better men, hoping for more. But after trying out a few choices, I realized love isnโ€™t all there is to life. You brought up Edwardโ€“heโ€™s got his own path now, and weโ€™re staying out of each otherโ€™s way. Ryan doesnโ€™t care about that, and itโ€™s up to him. If one day he tells me he does, Iโ€™ll respect that. You need inner strength to take on everything the world throws at you, but when it comes to love, it has to be between equals. Only then is it truly worth having.โ€

โ€œVictoria, bumping into you again this lifetimeโ€ฆ guess itโ€™s just a damned fate,โ€ Jared said, a sad chuckle in his voice. โ€œI thought heaven was giving me another chance to love you, but maybe itโ€™s only letting me see clearly how someone else gets to cherish you.โ€

โ€œOkay, enough about that. To be honest, word about your wild days gets around too, Jared. Youโ€™ve had your fair share of admirersโ€“maybe itโ€™s your turn to actually notice the great women right under your nose,โ€ I teased him.

โ€œJust going with the flow,โ€ Jared replied, sounding a bit down. โ€œYvonneโ€™s been acting a little odd lately. Sheโ€™s still just in third grade, but sometimes she talks and acts like a mini adult. On the bright side, sheโ€™s now ranked in the top five at school, and sheโ€™s placed in several competitions too.โ€

As I listened, things suddenly came into focus.

โ€œJared, what ifโ€ฆ what if Yvonne also went through time travel?โ€ I said, my words taking on an eerie edge.

Jared sounded genuinely freaked out, his voice rising. โ€œNo way. We only got a second chance because we died. Yvonne just spent a few years in jail. Now that sheโ€™s out, thereโ€™s the trust fund I set up for herโ€“sheโ€™ll be fine.โ€

I scoffed, a cold laugh escaping me. โ€œYouโ€™re forgetting about Tracy. Sheโ€™s already taken over your company. You really think sheโ€™ll give Yvonne the money? Yvonneโ€™s just a young girl, doesnโ€™t have much going for her. If Tracy wants to steal whatโ€™s hers, sheโ€™s got a dozen tricks up her sleeve.โ€

โ€œDamn itโ€ฆโ€ Jared cursed, his voice tight with pain and frustration. I could picture his face twisted with rage. โ€œHow could I not have seen that?โ€

โ€œJared, just keep an eye on Yvonne. If she really has come back, please donโ€™t frighten herโ€“just let her live a peaceful life as our daughter this time. She deserves to feel safe,โ€ I said softly, trying to reassure him.

Jaredโ€™s voice trembled, thick with emotion. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll do as you say. I wonโ€™t interfere with her life. Iโ€™ll let her truly be our child.โ€

โ€œKeep watching her, and fill me in on anything that happens. Iโ€™ll be watching her closely too. Letโ€™s keep each other updated,โ€ I said, then hung up.

If Yvonne had really been reborn, Jared wouldnโ€™t hesitate to make Tracy bleed. Yvonne was his one lineโ€”cross it, and heโ€™d stop at nothing to destroy Tracy.

This was their twisted loveโ€“hate saga, and right now, I just wanted to stay on the sidelines.

Another blazing hot summer was upon us.

My parents hosted a family dinner, and Aiden brought his girlfriend home to meet everyone.
