Chapter 96

Sally grinned, โ€œI just had a fortune teller read Yvonneโ€™s fortune. He said the next baby will be a boy.โ€

โ€œMommy, why not give me a little brother ASAP?โ€ Yvonne said, all cheerful as she shook my hand. โ€œI want a little brother.โ€

โ€œAlright, Yvonne, donโ€™t say that out loud. Just keep it in your heart,โ€ Sally said, beaming like she thought I could give her a son tomorrow.

Jared walked over, and Sally looked at him in surprise. โ€œJared, didnโ€™t you say you werenโ€™t coming?โ€

Jared replied gently, โ€œMom, the child belongs to both of us. Praying for a child only works if both husband and wife come together.โ€

โ€œDaddy?โ€ Yvonne spotted him, let go of my hand, and ran over with a big smile.

Jared bent down, scooped her up, and gave her nose a playful tap. โ€œDid you have fun?โ€

โ€œYes, Daddy. When are you going to kiss Mommy? Grandma said if you two kiss, Iโ€™ll get a little brother,โ€ Yvonne asked, grinning from ear to ear.

As soon as those words left her mouth, not just usโ€”even Sally turned red. She hurried to cover Yvonneโ€™s mouth. โ€œHush now, sweetie. There are so many people here. Your parents will get embarrassed.โ€

Jared just smiled indulgently, โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Itโ€™ll happen soon.โ€

I really didnโ€™t want to hear their talk. It was like my feelings didnโ€™t even exist to them. Nobody bothered to ask what I wanted.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Quinn?โ€ Jared asked.

Sally shot me a reproachful look. โ€œShe left right after praying. Her friends wanted to hang out.โ€

โ€œHow about we all have lunch together?โ€ Jared suggested, glancing at me. โ€œVictoria, itโ€™s been ages since we all had a meal out with Yvonne.โ€

Sally nodded. โ€œAlright, I was planning to buy Yvonne a toy at lunchtime anyway. Letโ€™s go to the mall.โ€

On the way back, Jared asked me to ride with him. Seeing that I didnโ€™t respond, Sally said, โ€œVictoria, why donโ€™t you talk to Jared? Yvonne can come with me.โ€

I hadnโ€™t driven over. Iโ€™d come in Sallyโ€™s car, so now I had no choice but to ride with Jared.

He didnโ€™t bring a driver and drove himself. When I went to open the back door, Jared was clearly annoyed. โ€œCome and sit in the front.โ€

But I ignored him and settled into the back seat.

โ€œSo now Iโ€™m just your driver, huh?โ€ Jared turned to look at me, looking even more furious.

โ€œIf you donโ€™t want me in your car, Iโ€™ll just call a cab,โ€ I said, reaching for the door.

โ€œAlright, quit it,โ€ Jared said, trying to rein in his temper. โ€œBeing your exclusive driver isnโ€™t exactly a big deal.โ€

I kept quiet. It was still up in the air whose exclusive driver he actually was. Not like I was lucky enough to enjoy that kind of treatment.

Jared looked pretty good behind the wheel, all laid-back and casual. He just drove in silence for a long while.

At a red light, a Marbach squeezed in next to us. Jared glanced over, adjusted the rearview mirror so he could see me sitting in the back.

I was eyeing the car, too. Thinking about how Nathan drove the exact same model, my heart fluttered a bit.

โ€œWhat? Are you fantasizing that Nathanโ€™s the one in that car?โ€ Jared shot back, his words edged with thorns.

I crossed my arms over my chest, my tone cool. โ€œAnd what if I am? Are you going to police even my thoughts now?โ€

Jared tapped his long fingers on the steering wheel. โ€œVictoria, as long as weโ€™re still married, youโ€™re my wife. Nathan doesnโ€™t even get to fantasize about you.โ€

His words carried an unspoken threat, even without anger. It sent a chill through me, reminding me just how deep Jaredโ€™s possessiveness and dominance really ran, always hidden beneath the surface.

โ€œGot it? Nathan may be young, but youโ€™d better keep your hands off him.โ€ Jaredโ€™s eyes fixed on me through the rearview mirror, staring me down with that possessive intensity.

It was both a reminder and a warning.
