Chapter 16

The nurse glanced up at Sophie, her expression stern. “The patient’s condition is extremely critical. He has very little will to live. All we can do is our best.”

With that, she closed the emergency room door firmly.

When she heard the nurse’s words, Sophie’s legs gave out, nearly causing her to collapse. Edison quickly supported her, helping her to a bench outside the emergency room. He spoke gently to comfort her. “Sophie, don’t worry. Joshua will be fine.”

She turned her blank gaze to him but couldn’t find the strength to respond. For some reason, it felt as though a sharp blade had been plunged into her chest, the pain so unbearable she couldn’t utter a sound.

She had never imagined a day like this. Joshua was fighting for his life inside. The nurse had said he had no will to survive, and Sophie was utterly powerless to do anything about it.

Joshua had stayed by her side for seven or eight years. She had always thought she hated him, that she wanted him to die and pay for everything he had done. Yet, now that she heard he had lost the will to live, fear gripped her heart.

Her tear-filled eyes fastened on the emergency room doors as her vision blurred. Edison scrambled to pull out a tissue and carefully wiped away her tears. “Don’t cry, Sophie. He’ll be okay.”

Sophie’s mind suddenly wandered to the first time she met him. Back then, he was a young man, fresh-faced and upright. Seeing her cry, his eyes had been filled with distress. He said, “Sophia, don’t cry. You deserve all the beauty this world has to offer.”

She got angry and stubbornly cared. In all the years he stayed by her side, he always put her first. No matter how much she mocked him or caused trouble, he never gave up on her.

But when had he stopped caring?

Time passed without her noticing. By the time he was wheeled out of the emergency room, the sky had grown dark. He was transferred to the intensive care unit, with Sophia and Edison following closely behind.

When Jayden saw them, his eyes turned bloodshot, and he couldn’t hold back his rage. “Sophia, do you even have a heart? Joshua is already in this state, and you bring your lover here to torment him? Are you trying to shorten his life on purpose?”

Before she could deny it, Edison stepped forward with an innocent tone to explain. “Doctor, you’ve misunderstood. Sophie and I are both very concerned about Joshua. We stayed by the operating room all day because we were worried something might happen to him.”

Jayden’s fists clenched tightly at his sides before he suddenly swung and punched Edison. Edison cried out in pain, glaring at the man standing a few steps away. “Are you insane? I was just concerned about Joshua. Why are you hitting me?”

Jayden’s face was filled with fury as he barked at the two of them, his voice sharp with anger. “Joshua doesn’t need your fake concern!”

Looking at Edison, he could tell the man was Sophia’s so-called lover. Edison looked almost identical to Edson. He was practically a mirror image. If it hadn’t been for her obsession with finding someone resembling Edson, he wouldn’t have endured so much suffering.

Sophia didn’t argue back, nor did she provoke Jayden further. Instead, she asked with concern, “How is he now?”
