Chapter 29
I knew the phone call had come from Edison. Apart from him, I had never seen Sophia care so much about anyone.
On the sixth day, after another round of chemotherapy, I could no longer hold back. I pulled Jayden’s hand and asked, “Jayden, can I stop the chemotherapy?” The chemotherapy was incredibly painful. I didn’t want to spend the final months of my life in so much agony.
Jayden looked at me silently, his eyes reddening, but he said nothing. I smiled and said, “Jayden, I’m only in my twenties. What if my hair all falls out? I don’t want to become a bald guy so young.” Like all the other times, he still didn’t agree. He laughed it off, saying, “If your condition improves, we won’t need chemotherapy anymore.”
“Okay,” I softly responded, smiling and changing the subject to the entertainment news I’d seen recently. He chatted with me for a while, then reminded the nurse to take good care of me before leaving. As he turned to leave, I clearly saw tears in the corners of his eyes.
The nurse cut me a plate of fruit and tidied the room while I opened my phone, feeling bored. A trending news article popped up as soon as I unlocked the screen: “Breaking News! A famous entertainment reporter exposes the Holmes Group president’s affair with her lover. Just how exciting is her private life?”
On impulse, I clicked the link, revealing a short video. The video was shaky, obviously taken secretly. I instantly recognized Sophia and Edison. They were being affectionate, chatting and laughing as they returned home—the home I once shared with her. My tolerance for such news had increased since witnessing even more explicit live streams.
I suddenly wondered about her feelings for him. She liked him, yet she didn’t divorce me. Was she willing to let him always be her side lover?
The following day, I woke up to see Sophia. I was surprised she’d come to the hospital so early. Just as I thought this, her lover entered my room, carrying breakfast.
“Sophia, Joshua, I bought breakfast. Let’s eat together.”
I stared at him silently, making no move. The atmosphere became tense. He looked at me helplessly, then glanced at Sophia. After a long pause, he said pitifully, “Joshua, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you didn’t want to see me. I’ll leave right away.”
I remained silent, letting him put on his act in front of her. Any normal man probably wouldn’t want to see his wife’s boyfriend, much less a third party. Sophia glanced at me, then turned to Edison. “You can go now.”
“Okay,” Edison responded weakly. As he was about to leave, he turned back, looking at me with apparent sincerity. “Joshua, whether you like me or not, I hope you recover soon.” After saying this, he raised an eyebrow provocatively as he left.
She didn’t notice his gesture. After he left, she sat down next to my bed. “He said he’s very grateful that you donated blood to save him before, so he wanted to thank you personally and hopes you recover soon.”
I looked up at her quietly. “Is that supposed to be an explanation?”
